This book is a treat, sectioned into pieces of jewelry and then models wearing the jewelry and then...I have three of the art-therapie books that I purchased from Amazon.co.fr, and I think this one is possibly my favorite. The writer's style leaves a lot to be desired, the 'plot' was terribly predictable practically from page one and the characterisation poor. From the blurb I was expecting a lot more - disappointing. Sorry, I will not bother with anything else by this author.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Witty and Funny By carabas It's a first novel but it's written from the heart. The five main characters are women, four sisters and their mother. Its about the relationships within a family. It's a comedy but with some heartbreaking moments, as in life. The writer really understands women. I enjoyed it a lot.

Their meeting was chance. Their love was fate. Their future was…dangerous. Orphaned at 14. Kidnapped at 20. American college student Allie Miller has known more than her share of heartache and terror. But when Italian industrialist David Swift inadvertently interrupts her captors, rescues her and whisks her off to his villa to recover, Allie’s future finally looks bright. She and David embark on a passionate love affair, but soon Allie must battle two new obstacles to her happily ever after: David’s past, including the mysterious American father he will not discuss; and one of her kidnappers, a sociopath with a vendetta against the couple and an affinity for abduction. Now, the couple’s love…and their very lives…are on the line. Can Allie and David keep history from repeating itself? Can they stop a madman bent on revenge? Or will their pasts destroy any chance of a future? HEAVEN IN THE DARK contains explicit sexual content and is intended for mature audiences. While it is the first of two planned books in a series, it is a stand-alone novel.

Review "A story that is as much of a treat as it is intriguing...an ultimately emotional read...that catches you unawares. I look forward to the next book." -- Books Laid Bare"This book was jam-packed with suspense, mystery, revenge, passion, love and scorching hot sex...a beautiful, different love story." -- Give Me Books

About the Author Tina Wright spent more than two decades as one of Nashville's top publicists, generating buzz and acclaim for hundreds of country music artists, from living legends to contemporary superstars. An avid writer all her life, Wright's debut book was a sports tome, Cardinal Memories: Recollections from Baseball's Greatest Fans (University of Missouri Press, 2000). She now writes and edits full-time. When she's not at her laptop, you can probably find her trying on the latest Helmut Lang designs, or reading, or drinking an iced latte, or reading, or watching those St. Louis Cardinals, or rea--well, you get the idea.

The writing is pretty good, except for places where the author tells us the emotions and actions and thoughts, rather than showing us or exposing through dialogue. I felt there were a lot of missed opportunities there. I also felt the main characters got together too quickly. It was another missed chance to create a bond of trust and tension (regarding their attraction to one another) between Allie and David, thus giving the reader the ability to bond with them as well. The fact that Allie had just been through a massively traumatic experience and has no idea who David is, then they are suddenly together gave me room to pause. In addition, Allie is described as being a middle class daughter of collegiate professors, yet she seems to know extremely high end furniture and home decor, which was lost on me personally. I also had a hard time with David's dialogue. I had a hard time hearing his accent, which was obvious when it came to Mrs. Hopkins and the Russians. I also saw the influence of several other popular novels, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I felt it led to a lot of predictability. There were a few grammatical errors, but nothing overwhelming or horrible. Also, at times, I felt there were words used that took me out of the story, as I felt they wouldn't use those words, based on their history or nationality. These are my pet peeves of course, and may not bother many people.Having said that, Ms. Wright is an adept writer, and there is a good story. For those of you looking for a romance adventure, with some sweet characters and some intrigue, this book may be well up your alley. Despite my issues, this was a good book and Ms. Wright definitely did her research in regards to locations, European terminology and major plot points. All in all, I would give heaven in the Dark 3.5 stars.

The descriptions were so intricate, as if the story were being painted right before me. The vocabulary was rich and intelligent. The characters were brought to life and I was swept up in the feelings that were portrayed. It was so easy to read and so hard to put down! I look forward to reading more from Tina Wright!

Really enjoyed the backstory of David's parents - it added a lot to the story - although I loved Allie and David, I think I was even more intrigued by Lidia and Eddie. Hopefully there will be a sequel!!! Highly recommend this book!

Henry Drummond was a Scottish evangelist, writer and lecturer. It had been his intention to reserve these lectures for mature revision, but an attempted piracy compelled him to hasten their publication, and they appeared in 1894 under the title of The Ascent of Man. Their object was to vindicate for altruism, or the disinterested care and compassion of animals for each other, an important part in effecting the survival of the fittest, a thesis previously maintained by Professor John Fiske.

I had done a few things and earned a few pence—I had perhaps even had time to begin to think I was finer than was perceived by the patronising; but when I take the little measure of my course (a fidgety habit, for it's none of the longest yet) I count my real start from the evening George Corvick, breathless and worried, came in to ask me a service. He had done more things than I, and earned more pence, though there were chances for cleverness I thought he sometimes missed. I could only however that evening declare to him that he never missed one for kindness. There was almost rapture in hearing it proposed to me to prepare for __The Middle__, the organ of our lucubrations, so called from the position in the week of its day of appearance, an article for which he had made himself responsible and of which, tied up with a stout string, he laid on my table the subject. I pounced upon my opportunity—that is on the first volume of it—and paid scant attention to my friend's explanation of his appeal. What explanation could be more to the point than my obvious fitness for the task? I had written on Hugh Vereker, but never a word in The Middle, where my dealings were mainly with the ladies and the minor poets. This was his new novel, an advance copy, and whatever much or little it should do for his reputation I was clear on the spot as to what it should do for mine. Moreover, if I always read him as soon as I could get hold of him, I had a particular reason for wishing to read him now: I had accepted an invitation to Bridges for the following Sunday, and it had been mentioned in Lady Jane's note that Mr. Vereker was to be there. I was young enough to have an emotion about meeting a man of his renown, and innocent enough to believe the occasion would demand the display of an acquaintance with his "last."

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. There are people who can't be vulgar for trying By H. Schneider There are 4 Henry James stories in this volume of 1896, all previously published in different magazines. I am happy to report that this story collection, properly entitled Embarrassments, is a major recovery after the previous dreariness of a story book called Terminations. James was back to his wicked, funny best, with a light hand.'The Next Time' is a farcical tale around the question whether literary quality requires or maybe even guarantees lack of success. Narrator is a critic whose praise is considered fatal for market success. Main character is a writer who tries desperately to be popular but cannot do it. His wife says of him: one has to think him a great man, because otherwise one would be ashamed of him. Funny and acidic. This must be 'about somebody', and I am rather certain it is about his own self. James is probably both: the failing writer and the 'Kiss of Death' critic.'Glasses' is a portrait of a pretty and naive young woman, narrated by a painter for whom she sits. She seems to lack social intelligence. She is a gold digger with dubious prospects. The narrator's rumor sources are particularly nasty here. The lady has the added problem that she tries to hide the fact that she needs glasses, which makes her sound a bit stupid by today's standards. But what could a poor gold-digging girl do at the time. (I do remember hearing unfriendly sexist comments about girls wearing glasses during my youth.)'The Figure in the Carpet' is another hoax, narrated by a young literary critic. He is mesmerized by a novelist's claim, made to himself, that there is a mystery to be found in that man's books, a secret. He starts looking for that secret, together with a friend and colleague. James pulls our legs nicely here. The joke is of the kind found in the Aspern Papers. We walk away empty handed after several hopeful approaches to the `figure in the carpet', the secret pattern. We will never know.'The Way It Came' is a sophisticated and subtle ghost story. Or is it a story of insane jealousy? Well, maybe both. The text is allegedly a part of a diary by an unspecified woman diarist, introduced by a doubting editor. This device of the text in the text is not often used by James. The diarist tells us of her broken engagement with a man who loved a ghost more than her. That's at least how she saw it. Is she an unreliable narrator? We will never know.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. A MONUMENTAL work of wisdom !!!!! By Joe Gun This is a monumental work of wisdom! I must have purchased one of the first books re-printed since the 1850s, again in 2010. To say the least, this book is not for the "faint of heart" - but for those who are in search of ABSOLUTE TRUTH. This is an 800 page leviathan written in 10 font, PhD level (relatively modern) English that took me about 10 months to plow through. That said, I have to state that this is one of the most profound books that I have ever read; and I've read many. Prior to reading this masterpiece I thought that I knew English, well was I in for a rude awakening. English aside however, it's the CONTENT that will blow you away. Having read most of Edgar Cayce's books, I came across this Andrew Jackson Davis' (AJD) volume from reading a book about Edgar Cayce by Thomas Sugrue called "There is a River." As you may know, Cayce has been one of the greatest undisputed clairvoyants ever! Not only have there been multiple attempts to debunk Cayce, but in actuality everyone who has tried to debunk Cayce ended up as an avid believer in what he did and what he stood for: (see an excellent book on Edgar Cayce: An American Prophet by Sidney Kirkpatrick). Well, it turns out that Cayce was not the first human to trot the halls of spiritual wisdom. AJD's life was a remarkable journey, and when he wrote this work, he was in a complete "hypnotic" trance - over a period of 3 years and 157 sittings - capable of doing things and knowing things that amazed all who would listen. Needless to say, for the first 6 months of obtaining this gift, he was paraded as a Guiney pig for the entertainment and wonder of all. His knowledge of Science, history and most of all his (latent) ability to heal any and all disease was far beyond what an 18 year old illiterate cobbler with a 2nd grade education could ever muster. Later in his life, AJD became an amazing healer, learning from the abilities gained during the writing of this book. This book, completed in 1846, predicts a number of scientific discoveries (and their discoverer) that were as yet un-discovered in 1846. The discovery of two more planets were predicted prior to their actual discovery as well as ... (read the book). AJD speaks of higher planes of consciousness, the TRUE and wondrous mental capacities of human kind. He speaks of true laws of nature and describes them in great detail - a bit more involved and beautiful than what they taught you in college physics. He speaks of early formation of our planet and the geologic mysteries that we are still trying to uncover. He describes what killed the dinosaurs and the evolution of other species of life on this planet. Best of all, you will learn about other intelligent civilizations that exist in the universe and where we (Earthly humanity) fit amongst them - don't hold your breath here! There is a complete discourse on the validity of different books of the bible as well as the extent to which these books have been "basterdised" by the interested parties. Moreover, he speaks at length about the "truly" enlightened prophets of history - not just what they taught you in Sunday school. And lastly, he addresses what it would take for us humans to live in harmony, peace, and tranquility. The bottom line is that, comparatively speaking we are a highly de-volved species who have MUCH, MUCH, more to learn before we can crawl! In closing, keep an eye out for what AJD does not say. As this book was written for the humanity of 1800s, he seems to stay away from discourse on ancient earth civilizations. I suspect that he would need another 300 pages to deal with this omission. This book is worth its weight in GOLD. Enjoy!

Another Channel of Truth from beyond By islemangu A deep book written around 1850 that is obviously channeled through the author from beyond when considering he was from a rural upbringing without a formal education or access to written knowledge. Many witnesses of high professional stature of that time went to great lengths to document the truth and eliminate any possibility that this was some type of fraud or trickery. The book explains those details.I found out about this book from another book, The Story of Edgar Cayce "There is a river..." written around 1940. He was puzzled on how to unfold his gifts and was relieved to learn of Andrew Jackson Davis's experience. I found out about Edgar Cayce's book through another book, "A Course in Miracles" written around 1970 that was scribed by another channel, Helen Schucman, whom was so convinced that its content was not of her origin that her name can not even be found on the published versions. She too was struggling on how to unfold her gifts when she investigated Edgar Cayce.Anyway, that is how I got to the reviewed book which is of course extraordinary."When in the year 1831 the professional Commission, which had been engaged in its investigation since its appointment several years before, caused its Report, confirming all the substantial phenomena attributed to somnambulism, to be read in the Medical Academy of Paris, THE DEEP SILENCE of the assembly betrayed the disturbance of their minds. Then, when as usual it was proposed that this report should be printed, an Academician, Castel, rose and protested against the printing of it, "because if the facts reported were true, half of our physiological science would be destroyed".

Thorogood Not had time to really get to grips with it, but what Ive read so far is inspiring and is extending my understanding of life, the universe and everything. When one considers that Andrew Jackson Davis was uneducated and practically illiterate, then read and understand what he and his 'friends' have put together in this book, well, mindblowing is no exaggeration. If you are serious about Spiritualism, then this book is a must.

Review Foreword by Yori Yanover Feminine Midrash Meets Standup Comedy and They Live Ever After I've often wondered if my love for my Jewish tradition were nearly as strong had I been born a woman (mind you, I thank God every single morning for His choice in my case). It takes a very special person—particularly if she did not grow up in a traditional home—to find her unique, feminine diamond in the testosterone-gorged rough of our tradition. One such uniquely gifted individual is author and standup comic Shashi Charton Ishai, whose Avigail, a Biblical time Dear Abby "sagette" (a female sage) is witty and funny, without ever losing sight of the gravity and depth of the intellectual landscape of her writing. The timeframe for Avigail's advice column is mid-to-late 13th century BCE, when the Israelites have been liberated from Egyptian slavery. One way they deal with their everyday problems is by seeking Avigail’s advice. "Anyway, when we were back in Egypt, it was very difficult to engage the children in games when it was raining boils, locusts and tax auditors outside. When wild beasts ran through Egypt (I’m referring to the animals, not the teenagers), it was hard to send your children across the street to play with a school chums. When Yetta Aronowitz sent her son, Yacov, she didn’t realize how allergic he was to lions... he broke out in eczema, as the lion put on a bib." Don't forget to tip your waitress. It’s an enjoyable read, you’ll probably want to read portions aloud to your loved ones. It works.

About the Author The moment Shashi Charton Ishai sat up in her carriage and said her first words, "Arthur Godfrey," her folks knew she was destined for the Arts. Her brother, Steve, who was nine years older, read her George Orwell's ANIMAL FARM as a bedtime story. To this day, she suffers from involuntary facial twitches, every time she passes a hardware store and spots a jar of glue. Her mother lived on a steady diet of gumdrops, cigarettes and coffee (no sugar). She loved to read the Star Magazine and preferred fictional friends to real ones. Her father's hobby was collecting unslicable cheese ends at the local supermarket. Upon his untimely demise, the Appetizing Department held the cheese flags at half mast. Shashi hails from North Bergen, N.J. She received an M.A.T. in English as a Second Language, and worries that her foreign students are tawking, eating chawklit, walking their dawgs and planning to visit New Yawk. She is married to Yacov Ishai, and they have two adopted children: Zehava (China), and Zaki (Guatemala). They have moved to Netanya, Israel from Teaneck, New Jersey. They also have a dog named Stanley Fisher, named after the economics whiz. If this book sells and they accumulate some money, Stanley will tell them where to bury it. It is the only bank where there is no penalty for early withdrawl, except for a sperm bank.

Under ANY circumstances By Clarkissima In the beginning, Shashi Ishai (channeling Avigail the Loquacious) created a timeless go-to guide for people of the mordant and understandably melancholic Hebraic strain...and their friends. Here are the answers to all of life's burning questions: what do you call the "embalming gel" that surrounds and preserves gefilte fish? How do you resign yourself to your daughter's unfortunate choice of mate? What about that "covet" commandment--does it apply to your neighbor's fine china? Under ANY circumstances, this compendium of advice from a BCE yenta is a jewel. The doctor says laughter is good for you--read it and laugh!

I found Ms. Ishai to be a very talented writer, and I look forward to reading what I hope will turn out to be a series!

I want to give a copy to every student because it is so well written. The pictures are beautifully done with a focus on the nature and setting as true traditional Haiku's are. All the while the author allows the reader to join the heroic adventures of Ninja Mouse. This book is perfect for any classroom trying to teach Haiku's, and gives a modern day example of how poetry can tell a hero's tale in a captivating way.

Tale of the Elk is a compilation of articles written by full-time fisherman and part-time lawyer Bill Byrne; his articles first appeared between 1927 and 1931 in West Virginia Wildlife Magazine. The articles were compiled and published as a book in 1940. Byrne’s stories chronicle rural life in West Virginia in the 1920s from the perspective of men who lived to fish and tell fish tales. Author Bill Byrne was born in 1862 in Fort Defiance, Virginia. His father was a Confederate officer in the Civil War; after the war his family moved to West Virginia. Byrne attended school in Wheeling and Charleston, worked as a civil engineer, and studied law with his uncle, Supreme Court Justice Homer A. Holt. Byrne was admitted to the bar in 1884 at the age of 22. Byrne’s love of the Elk and his book have cast a wide net over many devoted fans. Ken Sullivan, Director of the WV Humanities Council, writes: “Tale of the Elk is a classic—West Virginia’s answer to Norman MacLean’s A River Runs Through It. Byrne was an old-time sportsman, who took it seriously. He practiced law in Charleston when he had to, and fished the Elk when he could. He looked dubiously upon a lawyer if he didn’t fish. He speaks with great respect of the families native to the river, the Carpenters and others. The names of his fishing buddies read like a Who’s Who of prominent West Virginians of the era—Senator John Kenna, industrialist Johnson N. Camden, and others. You may learn more about them here, overheard in camp and canoe, than in most history books.” Byrne’s passion for fishing and friends, his humor and warmth, and his love of life are immediately evident. Byrne began his chronicles of his adventures on the Elk in 1927; his book follows its namesake river from its headwaters to its mouth in forty-nine chapters. Tale of the Elk captures the physical beauty and political climate of the times, usually with Byrne’s signature sense of humor. W.E.R. Byrne was stricken with pneumonia at his beloved “Camp at the End of the World” on the Elk, and died December 11, 1937, at the age of 75.

The author writes about many of my ancestors in this book making it of interest specifically to me. He mentions the fish camp where my grandfather and his brothers earned their living. The book is interesting reading if you know the area it's written about and can relate.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Every fly fisherman should read this book. By John Although I may be a bit biased since I have lived most of my life on the Elk River, I really enjoyed this book. The writer has a way of describing the river, fishermen's friendships, and an earlier time on the river in such a way that one feels he is there. This is a story of God's country.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Any outdoor enthusiast won't put this book down By Jim Byrne takes the reader from the very headwaters of the Elk River in central West Virginia to its confluence with the Kanawha River at Charleston and then back again. His descriptions of the area, its life and people back during the late 1800's and early 1900's leaves the reader feeling they were there with him. If you don't read this book at least two times, you won't appreciate its value in the history of the area.

The first full-length graphic novel from the author of Shrimpy and Paul: Who will win the All-Star Schnauzer Band song contest? Enter the strange and wordplay-loving world of the cartoonist and fine artist Marc Bell (Shrimpy and Paul, Hot Potatoe), where the All-Star Schnauzer Band runs things and tiny beings hold signs saying "It's under control." Our hapless hero, Stroppy, is minding his business, working a menial job in one of Monsieur Moustache's factories, when a muscular fellah named Sean blocks up the assembly line. Sean's there to promote an All-Star Schnauzer Band–organized songwriting contest, which he does enthusiastically and at the expense of Stroppy's livelihood, home, and face. Hoping for a cash prize, Stroppy submits a work by his friend Clancy the Poet. Mishaps and hilarity ensue, and Stroppy is forced to go deep into the heart of Schnauzer territory to rescue his poet friend. Stroppy is Bell's triumphant return to comics; it's also his first full-length graphic novella, one that thrums with jokes, hashtags, and made-up song lyrics. Densely detailed not-so-secret underground societies, little robots, and heavyweight humdingers leap off the page in full color. With Stroppy, Bell continues to explode the divide between fine art, doodling, and comics.

Marc isn't just great art he has the narrative chops By Richard Jr. If Will Elder and Geof Darrow gave birth to a next generation underground artist with a fine art sensibility, then you might begin to describe the genius of Marc Bell. Primed by the stunning art of Hot Potatoes and prepped by Pure Pajamas, I still wasn't convinced that Marc could pull off a full length narrative. I was so wrong. At first I was a little concerned about the slightly stripped down art. I had grown used to the wonderfully complex art and type mix that made him so engaging, but once I started reading, I became a true believer. It's amazing consistency and great reading flow made for an unstoppable and thoroughly great experience. His sense of the real world mixed with surreal elements is as unique as reading Jim Woodring. I'm now re-reading Pure Pajamas and looking for my copy of Shrimpy and Paul just so I can keep capturing the feeling.

0 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Waste of trees, waste of time, waste of money By Josef K. I'm game for absurd and nonsensical, but not for boring. This is extremely boring. No story, no characters, no nothing. The weak drawings become totally tiresome after a few pages. This is a pathetic attempt at coolness which I didn't even finish. If you want to buy a book that you'll never read again, go ahead.

Politics in Bavaria, 1899 By Turan Josef Filser, a farmer from a small village in Upper Bavaria is elected into the Bavarian State Parliament in 1899. He does not know anything about politics and lacks any unnecessary education. From Munich he writes to his wife and friends, and to the local clergyman about his experiences in politics or downtown Munich at night. His letters are hardly literate. He reports about parliamentary bills several hundred pages long (he sells them to a butcher in exchange for some sausages), a revolution against increased beer prices (he gets beaten with fence posts) or the opening of a farmer's fair.He is strongly against an art exhibition at a Munich museum, because the Rubens ladies are nude and "below the navel it is not art". Another article about Bavaria's foreign relations stress that Prussia (=Northern Germany) is a foreign country, because her inhabitants are poor and Lutheran. The German version is hardly legible for readers who do not understand the Bavarian dialect. Even native German speakers from outside Bavaria might have a problem.Otherwise, it is a very funny book with a serious background. In 1900, Bavaria had an arch-conservative government with excellent connections to the Catholic church and the local farmers. There was not much change in the following hundred years.

Best Ebook PDF The Lyre of Orpheus, by Robertson Davies

Hailed as a literary masterpiece, Robertson Davies's Cornish Trilogy comes to a brilliant conclusion in The Lyre of Orpheus, now part of the new Modern Classics series.     There is an important decision to be made. The Cornish Foundation, set up with money left by the late Francis Cornish, connoisseur, collector, and notable eccentric, must decide which undertaking will receive a portion of its considerable funds.      The Foundation decides to support the doctoral work of Hulda Schnakenbury, a thoroughly unpleasant young genius of a music student. Her task is to complete the score of an unfinished opera by E.T.A. Hoffmann, and as plans take shape, Hoffmann's dictum, "The lyre of Orpheus opens the door of the underworld," proves prophetic for many a participant.          Baroque and deliciously funny, this third book in the Cornish Trilogy shows Robertson Davies at his very considerable best.

The Lyre of Orpheus, by Robertson Davies

From Publishers Weekly The third volume of the Cornish trilogy has less mystery and suspense than The Rebel Angels and What's Bred in the Bone , but there are still rewards for the reader. This is a deeper, more thoughtful and old-fashioned book, somewhat padded with leisurely asides, snippets of poetry and observations on the subject of artistic creativity. The plot revolves around a production of an unfinished opera by the 19th century composer E.T.A. Hoffmann, whose entreaty "Let the lyre of Orpheus open the door of the underworld of feeling" is borne out on many levels. The completion of Hoffmann's Arthur of Britain, or The Magnanimous Cuckold , is sponsored by the Cornish Foundation, presided over by the late benefactor's nephew, Arthur; the duplication of names is not accidental, for in the course of the narrative the modern-day Arthur is cuckolded by his wife, gypsy Maria Theotoky. Packed with interesting details of opera history and production, boasting some new, eccentric characters, and pulling together Robertson's various themes in a harmonic resolution, the novel should satisfy those who will settle for intelligent observations and playful allusions rather than dramatic momentum this time around. 50,000 first printing; $50,000 ad/promo; BOMC and QPBC alternates. Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Old fans will be delighted, and new readers intrigued, as characters from Davies's The Rebel Angels ( LJ 1/1/82) and What's Bred in the Bone ( LJ 11/15/85) reappear in this demanding but worthwhile third volume of "The Deptford Trilogy." With his wonderfully complex yet controlled plot, deft portrayal of eccentric characters, and great wit, Davies effectively satirizes the world of universities and foundations. Members of the Cornish Foundation are forced by Francis Cornish's nephew Arthur into funding the doctoral project of abrasive prodigy Hulda Schnackenburgthe completion and production of E.T.A. Hoffman's opera Arthur of Britain , or, The Magnificent Cuckold. Soon the characters' lives begin to resemble the opera's plot, and the spirit of Hoffman in Limbo, who observes "Let the lyre of Orpheus open the door of the underworld of feeling," complicates the actionall to the reader's delight. Elizabeth Guiney Sandvick, North Hennepin Community Coll., MinneapolisCopyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review Novel by Robertson Davies, published in 1988. The book is the third in the so-called Cornish trilogy that also includes The Rebel Angels (1981) and What's Bred in the Bone (1985). This fable about the nature of artistic creation has two major plot lines. One thread concerns the production of an unfinished opera said to have been written by E.T.A. Hoffmann. The other concerns the discovery that the famous art collector Francis Cornish actually passed off one of his own paintings as a 16th-century masterpiece. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Fun, But The Weakest of the Trilogy By A Customer The Lyre of Orpheus continues the story of the characters introduced in The Rebel Angels -- Maria and Arthur Cornish, Simon Darcourt, Clement Hollier, etc. I read the Cornish Trilogy straight through, and while I very much enjoyed it, I thought Davies ran out of gas somewhere in the Lyre of Orpheus. What I liked so much about the first two books was Davies' delving into the personalities of the characters; What's Bred in the Bone deals more with Francis Cornish, but goes very deeply into the forces that shaped his life. Davies has great insight into human nature. In The Lyre of Orpheus, the characters' motivations are not well explored. For example, we learn that a character's wife has an affair that results in pregnancy, and that the man, with apparently little ado, not only forgives his wife and treats her with undiminished devotion, but also continues to regard her lover as the dear friend he had been. Well, that's great, but uncommon, and Davies makes no attempt to explain this astounding level of generosity other than to analogize it to the Arthurian legend (but that was a legend). Similarly, we learn that Simon Darcourt has taken something of a new path in his life, but for motivation we are told little more than that, after taking a walk in woods, he has decided to view his life differently. Instead of helping us to relate to these characters, Davies spends a great deal of time educating us about how to produce an opera, evidently a great love of his. Opera fans will find this great fun, but it doesn't make for a great story. Finally, the analogizing to Arthurian legend of the characters' lives that permeates the entire work as a leitmotif becomes increasingly heavyhanded as time wears on, almost to the point of self-parody. In short, it's an entertaining read, but not up to the level of the first two parts of the trilogy.

An unfinished opera by E.T.A. Hoffman is to be completed by an unlovable music student as a part of a bequest from a charitable foundation. From the beginning Davies' coruscating prose enchants and, as the twin plots begin to unfold, the richly eccentric characters begin to draw the reader in. Davies has a way of tying the most obscure facts together and making his huge knowledge accessible through humour and his immensely gifted, exhilarating, writing. If you have never read Robertson Davies you should start now. Start with The Lyre of Orpheus if you like, it is a superb book in it's own right, but it is a part of the outstanding "Cornish Trilogy" so you may prefer to begin with The Rebel Angels, the first in the trilogy. Personally, though, I would buy the trilogy right now.

A Mixture of Frailties Remixed By Mark Salter Treats the same subject as the much earlier A Mixture of Frailties, from a different approach (and in a more modern manner). Philosophical, farcical, thoughtful, touching, and even -- gasp - educational. The plot drives ahead almost unnoticed, as usual, until you realize, quite by accident, that you really need to find out how this is all going to come out.

Hippocampus: Deconstructed is a psychological and deeply emotional journey through “the paradox of being flawed, unfitting and excluded” (Stagnant), toward a courageous self acceptance and self love, discarding the humiliation, shame and ridicule to which the poet is subjected because he is seem as “unworthy”. José F. Avilés rediscovers his humanity; his essential need to be loved, to belong, to be accepted and be totally authentic. His “hope is the will power that transforms change into growth” (Hippocampus {In} Visible), it flourishes in adversity and gives the poet the power to be visible. The poems are a magnificent work of art that capture empathically and drive us toward the understanding and final acceptance of diversity. --Prof. Grisselle Acosta-Vélez, Catedrática Asociada, Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico Hippocampus: Deconstructed tackles the somber reality of shame, social standards, exclusions, disconnection, and apathy through the voices' eyes in alluring and mesmerizing verses. The voices explore their journey from callousness to the newly discovered array of emotions in a new reality--where we believe we are defective, a contagious virus that only spreads failure. These molds asphyxiate their true selves, leading them to the consequential strugge for authenticity. --Patrick Lopez Hippocampus: Deconstructed is the following belief, “I must reach the root,//an antithesis of shame.” (Stagnant). The poet begins by recognizing faulty messages that the brain repeats endlessly, “I am the bother//that tires and wears them to exhaustion” (Exclusion); the voice goes on to question who is truly alive in (Anguish), “Charred skin//longs for light//who would have noticed//that I breather among statues?” The voice quivers and fades as it is treated less than human in (Daring Greatly) “my arms tire of carrying the weight//of complacency//I am less than human//I am the label you have given me.” The realization begins when the poet realizes the following, “It hurts to be carefree, it hurts to be happy//and I cannot manage the impending doom.” (Too Intense). This collection of poems explore the physiological effects of being immersed in shame, as seen in (Dysthymia), “Out of focus,//the world is the blur//My limbs lose their lightness//the courage to walk through white columns//Heavy, I have become the weight of a world//a decrepit world. Deceased.” This book invites us to analyze the messages we constantly play into our conscious thoughts, the cultural messages that force us to fear vulnerability and our actions that exacerbate feelings of self-disgust. Hippocampus: Deconstructed teaches an absolute truth in (Silent Epidemic) “Labels have done to us what we have done to the sea--//disconnection.” Follow the poet into his ruminating verses that explore the pain of imperfection, the fear of humiliation and ridicule as the voice transitions from bleak thoughts toward self-acceptance, self-worth, self-compassion, self-love, and the realization of a true identity: authenticity. --The Author, Jose Francisco Aviles Acosta

I'm impressed by the profound sense of self awareness that is so captivating in the contents of these poems. Is clear to me that the quest for self worth among the millennials is as difficult as it was for the Baby Boomers. Jose Aviles' writing reminds me of some of my favorites authors, Among them Garcia Lorca, Pablo Neruda, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and Juan Felipe Herrera. Te Felicito!!

It's a journey through the human mind and how it functions in a society where rejection and shame are always a constant threat. This book is full of emotions and anybody can relate to the voice's fight for freedom and authenticity. Excellent work!
