The existence of God has long fascinated the human species. Based on a system of belief and several historical encounters with God, people have built their religions. Whenever something bizarre bothers someone, and that someone takes refuge in divine guidance, hardcore religious preachers give only one absurd answer : “God works in a mysterious way”. But has this so called God ever been experienced by any mortal being, or was it all very biological! In the book the author takes us to the scientific land of investigation where we shall explore the true biological foundation of God and religious beliefs. In this fascinating journey of neuroscience we shall discover how exactly we humans constructed God and not the other way around.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not scientific. By Sabrina This book has terrible Grammer and there is no source material provided. The author would benefit from an editor as using the slang conjunction "kinda" does not belong in the text of a book that is supposed to be about science. The sentence structure is bad and with no source material you are just expected to take the authors word that what he is saying is true. There are much better books of this variety available from reputable sources that use appropriate citation. If you are looking for a source for a academic research paper this is not it as it is at best an opinion piece.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Ok.... But By Ron B While I was impressed by the book I do wish the author had offered more reference material. Would I recommend it to others... yes. Would I buy it again.....no.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Interesting ideas poorly presented By Hans Maverick "The God Parasite" presents a whole host of ideas explaining,or at least purporting to explain, why religion is so universal among humans. Many of these are tired old canards often rehashed by non-believers who want to write theists off as simply ignorant or cowardly, e.g., "There were so many natural phenomena taking place all around the [sic] primitive man, which he couldn't explain. . . . Hence came fear." Toward the end of the book, Mr. Naskar redeems himself somewhat by presenting an overview of neuroscience that explains a host of allegedly spiritual phenomena such as out-of-body experiences, but the work of other writers like Andy Thomson and Pascal Boyer present much more coherent and credible explanations of the neuroscience and anthropology that drive religion. Finally, this book's stilted prose and poor use of references render it nearly useless.Summing up, buy this book only if you find it in the bargain bin at your local used bookstore.

In presenting to the public the last volume of the "RAGGED DICK SERIES," the author desires to return his thanks for the generous reception accorded, both by the press and the public, to these stories of street life. Several of the characters are drawn from life, and nearly all of the incidents are of actual occurrence. Indeed, the materials have been found so abundant that invention has played but a subordinate part. The principal object proposed, in the preparation of these volumes, has been to show that the large class of street boys numbering thousands in New York alone furnishes material out of which good citizens may be made, if the right influences are brought to bear upon them. In every case, therefore, the author has led his hero, step by step, from vagabondage to a position of respectability; and, in so doing, has incurred the charge, in some quarters, of exaggeration. It can easily be shown, however, that he has fallen short of the truth, rather than exceeded it. In proof, the following extract from an article in a New York daily paper is submitted: "As a class, the newsboys of New York are worthy of more than common attention. The requirements of the trade naturally tend to develop activity both of mind and body, and, in looking over some historical facts, we find that many of our most conspicuous public men have commenced their careers as newsboys. Many of the principal offices of our city government and our chief police courts testify to the truth of this assertion. From the West we learn that many of the most enterprising journalists spring from the same stock." Not long since, while on a western journey, the Superintendent of the Lodging House in Park Place found one of his boys filling the position of District Attorney in a western State, another settled as a clergyman, and still others prosperous and even wealthy business men. These facts are full of encouragement for those who are laboring to redeem and elevate the street boy, and train him up to fill a respectable position in society. Though the six volumes already issued complete his original purpose, the author finds that he has by no means exhausted his subject, and is induced to announce a second series, devoted to still other phases of street life. This will shortly be commenced, under the general name of the "TATTERED TOM SERIES." NEW YORK, November 1, 1870.

Mike gave me the awesome opportunity to read this book before it was published for part of a weekly reading. This book is not one that you will be able to simply pick up and read without your brain being stretched. It will make you think about things you may have never thought about before. All in all, if you're wanting to learn what a strong covenant relationship with God is and striving to build one, this book is for you. I Hope you enjoy it and much as i did!

He provides the basis for a deeper insight into what it means to be one of God's people and what a covenant is. He does a good job of getting past the cold idea of a covenant and makes it personal. The book is easy to read -- just dedicate a small amount of time to read a chapter each day, and then meditate on that information, and you will be spiritually benefitted. This is going to become one of the books I keep several copies of in order to give them away to others.

I loved the thoughts and the scriptures to back it up! One of my favorite parts was talking about the "law written on the heart", explained as "the precepts cannot be directly transferred from the written page to action. They must become, through reflection and through effort, increasingly a part of our total outlook upon life." (p.60) Great points are made and new insights which help you live a better life as a Christian.

An Indian college student moves into a rented house in a suburban town in England. The shared house, which he starts living in, has other foreign boarders too, including an overage German student - a social misfit who has this uncanny talent to vex even the mildest of men. The Indian graduate notices that the German’s boorish behaviour and queer mannerisms had isolated the latter from everybody around. But over a period of time, the newcomer starts seeing a different side to the uncouth, middle-aged, lonely man. Perhaps, all that man deserved was a second chance… A chance to be understood…

Best Ebook PDF The Study of Life and the New Physics, by Vladimir I Vernadsky

This is the first English translation of this revolutionary essay by Vladimir I. Vernadsky, the great Russian-Ukrainian biogeochemist. It was first published in 1930 in French in the Revue générale des sciences pures et appliquées. In it, Vernadsky makes a powerful and provocative argument for the need to develop what he calls “a new physics,” something he felt was clearly necessitated by the implications of the groundbreaking work of Louis Pasteur among few others, but also something that was required to free science from the long-lasting effects of the work of Isaac Newton, most notably.

For hundreds of years, science had developed in a direction which became increasingly detached from the breakthroughs made in the study of life and the natural sciences, detached even from human life itself, and committed reductionists and small-minded scientists were resolved to the fact that ultimately all would be reduced to “the old physics.” The scientific revolution of Einstein was a step in the right direction, but here Vernadsky insists that there is more progress to be made. He makes a bold call for a new physics, taking into account, and fundamentally based upon, the striking anomalies of life and human life.

How Church Can Change Your Life: Answers to the Ten Most Common Questions about Church, by Josh Moody

Review ... a book of great worth. It would make a helpful 'book of the month' on church bookstalls for church members to read and be reminded of what church is meant to be about, or to help non-Christians make progress as they consider the Christian faith. ~ Evangelicals Now I learned a great deal from Josh Moody's How Church Can Change Your Life: Answers to the Ten Most Common Questions about Church (Christian Focus, 2015). That's because Moody doesn't ask "how," but tells "why." Why should you go to church? Ultimately, the answer is that you can meet Jesus there. Church is not a continuation of Jesus or a substitute for Jesus. It is a way-the God-ordained way-of getting to know Jesus. Moody's key insight is that preaching is the living voice of Christ speaking in His church: "Biblical preaching is important because it is Jesus' way to meet with his people and show us his glory, his beauty, his love, and help us to be captivated by who he is." So when you listen to a sermon, you are not comparing this sermon to other sermons, or to what you would say about the passage if you had the chance. You listen to preaching because it is what Jesus has to say to you at a particular moment. Thus, Moody writes, "Churches are not meant to be led by administrative geniuses with fancily marketed programmes for all ages; they are meant to be led by Christ through his Word, which means that preaching is centrally important." With that focus on the preaching of the Word come excellent short chapters on the sacraments-and on other things that are often hard to find good answers on. Do I need to go to church if I am Christian? Moody's answer: Does a severed hand need to be reattached to the body? ~ World Magazine ... a powerful and needed reminder of the central role the local church should play in the life of every Christian. ~ R. Albert Mohler (President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky) ...presents a compelling case for why we must be part of a healthy local church... ideal for new Christians, seekers who are unsure about the church, and for all those who have lost sight of the glorious truth that the church is God's agency for changing the world. ~ John Stevens (National Director, Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches, Market Harborough, England) This book answers questions about the church that your friends are asking!... Read this book and be encouraged by his answers, and then pass it along to a friend who has considered church attendance to be optional. ~ Erwin Lutzer (Senior Pastor, Moody Church, Chicago, Illinois) This book is just brilliant! ~ Steve Levy (Pastor, Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Swansea, Wales)

"Amy Foster" is a short story by Joseph Conrad written in 1901, first published in the Illustrated London News (December 1901). A poor emigrant from Central Europe sailing from Hamburg to America is shipwrecked off the coast of England. The residents of nearby villages, at first unaware of the sinking, and hence of the possibility of survivors, regard him as a dangerous tramp and madman. He speaks no English; his strange foreign language frightens them, and they offer him no assistance. Eventually "Yanko Goorall" (as rendered in English spelling) is given shelter and employment by an eccentric old local, Mr. Swaffer. Yanko learns a little English. He explains that his given name Yanko means "little John" and that he was a mountaineer (a resident of a mountain area — a Goorall), hence his surname. The story's narrator reveals that Yanko hailed from the Carpathian Mountains. Yanko falls in love with Amy Foster, a servant girl who has shown him some kindness. To the community's disapproval, they marry. The couple live in a cottage given to Yanko by Swaffer for having saved his granddaughter's life. Yanko and Amy have a son whom Amy calls Johnny (after Little John). Amy, a simple woman, is troubled by Yanko's behavior, particularly his trying to teach their son to pray with him in his "disturbing" language. Several months later Yanko falls severely ill and, suffering from a fever, begins raving in his native language. Amy, frightened, takes their child and flees for her life. Next morning Yanko dies of heart failure. It transpires that he had simply been asking in his native language for water.

Amy Foster, by Joseph Conrad

About the Author Polish author Joseph Conrad is considered to be one of the greatest English-language novelists, a remarkable achievement considering English was not his first language. Conrad s literary works often featured a nautical setting, reflecting the influences of his early career in the Merchant Navy, and his depictions of the struggles of the human spirit in a cold, indifferent world are best exemplified in such seminal works as Heart of Darkness, Lord JimM, The Secret Agent, Nostromo, and Typhoon. Regarded as a forerunner of modernist literature, Conrad s writing style and characters have influenced such distinguished writers as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, William S. Burroughs, Hunter S. Thompson, and George Orwell, among many others. Many of Conrad s novels have been adapted for film, most notably Heart of Darkness, which served as the inspiration and foundation for Francis Ford Coppola s 1979 film Apocalypse Now.

Christians, some Catholics and Protestants alike, have tended to use Francis's pronouncements to justify the correctness of their own viewpoints on Vatican Council II and other theological matters. Professor Echeverria has read widely in Francis, and gets at where Francis really stands with respect to Vatican II. He does a thorough job of drawing on Francis's own pre-papal and papal writings, talks, and sermons to discover and document the continuity in Francis's thought with the council. Additionally, Echeverria compares Francis's discourse with that of his papal predecessors in the era since Vatican II and draws heavily on the documents of Vatican II and the theology of doctrinal development stemming from the First Vatican Council and embraced by Vatican II. Not left out is the modern ecumenical movement from both the Reformed and Catholic side. A text made for seminarians and divinity students, this book is also for those who wish to understand the 'real' Pope Francis and his legacy of Vatican II.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Erudite & helpful By Philip Blosser First the positives. My friend and colleague has written a predictably erudite book, littered with hundreds of footnotes backing up every assertion with solid references. This is why Echeverria has the reputation for being a walking encyclopedia. As I began reading this book, I wondered at first whether it would be simply another attempt, like Dave Armstrong's "Pope Francis Explained," to justify the ways of Pope Francis to confused Catholics -- a sort of "Papodicy," in the way that a "Theodicy" is an attempt to justify the ways of God to man. There is something of that in Echeverria's book (and it is what other reviewers, like Fr. John McCloskey find in it) , but it is certainly much more. Hence the subtitle: "the legacy of Vatican II."Echeverria's aim is to cut through the confusion and get at "the theological mind of Pope Francis"; and he spares no effort in digging through reams of material, addresses, homilies, writings, pre-papal statements to do so (his bibliography contains upwards of fifty entries just by Francis). In doing so, Echeverria aims to also show how Francis's "theological mind" is fully consonant with Vatican II and his two papal predecessors. In this respect, his book provides mainstream Catholics with what many would regard as good "ammunition" against liberal revisionist Catholics. He goes to great pains to distinguish levels of magisterial teaching and to show how liberals end up with a hermeneutic of rupture by interpreting "doctrinal development" as doctrinal change. The assumption here, of course, is that Francis is shown to be an opponent of such liberalism and revisionism. The first part of the book is quite dense with conceptual distinctions building on that expressed by Pope John XXIII at the opening of the Council between unchanging doctrinal truths and changing expressions and understandings of those truths. At times these distinctions, as Echeverria follows various different authors and their respective parallel sets of distinctions, may be a trifle confusing even to to the most intelligent reader. However, the objective is clear: Echeverria wants to show that Francis, while his style and modes of expression may differ from pre-Conciliar popes, nevertheless stands firmly within that irreformable Catholic tradition. The other side of the doctrinal equation, of course, is that Francis also avoids the "immobile expression" of traditionalists. Thus, Echeverria also rejects (and sees Francis as rejecting) the view that expressions of traditional doctrine cannot be changed. Accordingly, he rejects as untenable both (a) the view of Roberto de Mattei that the Council was purely "pastoral" and therefore "non-doctrinal," and therefore doctrinally irrelevant, and (b) the view he attributes to Lefebvre and the SSPX that the Council was indeed "doctrinal" but introduced new doctrines while rejecting others. But, of course, if Echeverria's aim is to show that Francis represents a faithful expression of Vatican II and stands in unbroken solidarity with his immediate predecessors, this will not satisfy those whom Echeverria terms "traditionalists," since they will all-too-easily dismiss his reading as a "neo-conservative" or "neo-Catholic" justification of the changes in the Church introduced by Vatican II. The problem will be seen by them as including the unresolved tensions in Vatican II documents acknowledged by both Cardinal Kasper and Bishop Athanatius Schneider, the unexpected and shockingly-disappointing results of the Council acknowledged by Paul VI and Benedict XVI, the "smoke of Satan" Paul VI professed to see entering into the Church after the Council, John XXIII's confession to Cardinal Heenan that he had lost control of the Council after the first session, or Cardinal Oddi's suggestion that the Blessed Mother's statements at Fatima about the "diabolical disorientation" in the Church could refer to the convening of the Council itself -- not to mention all the unauthorized changes introduced into the Church since the Council. Most of this will be dismissed, in turn, as overly alarmist patent nonsense by the "everything is awesome" gallery of Lego Movie Catholics, as well as mainstream Catholics who recognize abuses and problems in the Church while still giving it, basically, a clean bill of health. Why four stars? I would have given it five for its erudition and academic helpfulness in sorting through numerous useful distinctions, but I felt the book failed to speak adequately to the more substantial anxieties that afflict many faithful Catholics at the present hour. An earlier reviewer speaks of its ignoring the "elephant in the room." While I'm not sure what he may have meant, many Catholics today undeniably feel (with some justification) as if the walls of the Church are collapsing around them, that the Church is "imploding," that the Catholic traditions are in collapse, that the Church is in a state of free-fall. Numerous statements by earlier Catholic leaders seem to have anticipated this perception. Louis Bouyer spoke of the "decomposition of Catholicism." Paul VI of the "auto-demolition" of the Church. The statistics of Kenneth C. Jones's "Index of Leading Catholic Indicators" are alarming. One of the "temptations" that Francis references and links with the temptation of "traditionalism" is what he calls the temptation of the "intellectual." One could arguably claim, I think, that this temptation could equally be identified with the "liberal" or the "moderate." The problem is ostensibly the gap between the level of (a) ideas, concepts and propositions, on the one hand, and (b) the realities of where the "rubber meets the road," on the other. And while a monograph steeped in the distinctions Nouvelle Théologie (Henri Bouillard, Henri de Lubac, Jean Danielou, Yves Congar, Hans Urs von Balthasar, Eduard Schillebeeckx, Karl Rahner, etc.) may be helpful to the theorist in working out certain problems of conceptualization, it may not address the existential concerns of average Catholics concerned with a pope who often seems to be sending mixed signals. What does it mean, for instance, for Francis to say that "proselytism is solemn nonsense" in an era when Catholic missions are virtually nonexistent? Like so many of his other statements, once his intended meaning can be made clear in the specific context in which it was uttered, perhaps there is no problem; but the effect is, to say the least, disconcerting. Then there is the matter of this academic distinction between truth and its expressions. The distinction is certainly legitimate and perhaps quite helpful in the academic world of theologians and philosophers. But if, as John XXIII stated, the "greatest concern of the [Second Vatican Council]" was "that the sacred deposit of Christian doctrine should be more effectively defended and presented," the results of the Church's new modes of "expression" of her timeless doctrinal "truths" haven't been apparently very successful. There is also the insight left to us by another Catholic convert by the name of Marshall McLuhan -- namely: "The medium IS the message." And if that has any truth to it, we're still in a world of trouble.I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in the serious and demanding scholarship required for sorting through the theological crisis bequeathed to us by the last half-century or more. This book is, at the very least, very helpful reading in understanding what has come to be seen as something close to the mainstream or quasi-"official" interpretation of Vatican II and its aftermath.

2 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Theology on one's knees. By Kindle Customer I give this book five stars because it teaches - not only about Pope Francis but about what it means to be Catholic. I am a stay at home mother of many and I am presently studying for a Masters degree in theology. Below are my thoughts, in particular. What is the true “Spirit of Vatican II”? Surely it is one that fulfills the original purpose of the Council, as stated by Pope John XXIII in his opening speech to the council. It is the spirit that uses the “medicine of mercy rather than the weapons of severity.” It is one that "explains the validity of [the Church’s] doctrine more fully,” and in this expression of truth, ensures the “same meaning and same judgement.” A task of any pope is certainly to guard the deposit of faith and preserve continuity with his predecessors. Pope Francis is no different, and we discover who Jorge Bergoglio truly is in a new book, which seeks to discover his theological mind. The many sound bites and news editorials about Pope Francis the last two years have been confusing, to say the least. Those confused and concerned will be truly enlightened by this book, Pope Francis: The Legacy of Vatican II, by Dr. Eduardo Echeverria. Beginning with the call of Vatican II by Pope John XXIII, Dr. Echeverria diligently shows how the ideas in the writings, homilies, and speeches of Archbishop Bergoglio, continuing through his Pontificate as Pope Francis, represent a hermeneutic of continuity with the tradition of the Church and with each of his predecessors. It would be a challenge for anyone, whether a cleric, scholar, or layman, to be as well-read as Professor Echeverria on Jorge Bergoglio and to offer a methodical analysis of Francis as a theologian. The depth of research that went into this book is shown throughout the bibliography and vast citations.Professor Echeverria thoroughly presents the call of Pope Francis to all to reflect on the truth of the Dignity of the Human Person, to create a "culture of encounter," and seek unity with others as brothers and sisters in Christ. The book is attentive to the Church infighting, from Traditionalist to Progressive, and shows how Pope Francis speaks to all and invites us to the central Gospel message: "respond to the God of love who saves us, see God in others, and go forth from ourselves to seek the good of others" (Pope Francis, Evangelii gaudium, 39). Dr. Echeverria explains how Pope Francis' method of spreading the "fragrance of the Gospel” consists in understanding a "hierarchy of truths” - not a quantitative hierarchy, but an inclusive one - in which each truth of the body is better understood in harmony with the whole Christian message. Indeed, the sweet smell of Gospel truth can be particularly pungent to some, yet very welcoming to others. Many can expect to be challenged in reading this book, as our Lord was challenging for any who lacked a humble heart. Pope Francis is calling every one of us to spiritual maturity, with an awareness, yet aversion, to our own sins.Dr. Echeverria's book helped me to see some errors in many of my preconceived ideas, through the theology of Jorge Bergoglio, in continuity with the teachings of the Church. This book challenged me spiritually as well as intellectually. As Pope Francis has reminded us, theology should be done with an open heart and on one's knees.

3 of 6 people found the following review helpful. isn't it striking that a wholesome publisher like Ignatius Press has risked Rome's displeasure twice now by ... By j.mart I pulled an earlier review of this book because I did not want to be caustic. However re-reading the previous review caused me a bit of concern since its essential attitude evidences just what alarms me about our current pontiff. "It would be a challenge for anyone, whether a cleric, scholar, or layman, to be as well-read as Professor Echeverria on Jorge Bergoglio and to offer a methodical analysis of Francis as a theologian." Exactly! And if we need a professional theologian engaging in intense rhetorical analysis to reassure us of the poe's soundness, we have a problem. Pope Francis may be spreading a fragrance, but it is odd to unnerving that almost all of the more conservative commentators have by now registered concern over where he is taking us...* While almost all of the more liberal commentators are applauding. And regardless of what the Synod on the Family ends up deciding, isn't it striking that a wholesome publisher like Ignatius Press has risked Rome's displeasure twice now by issuing pressing commentaries by cardinals convinced things are not quite right? To suggest that those who are challenged by Pope Francis lack a humble heart is fall for the misguided idea that the Pope is like the Mormon 'prophet,' an oracle or uniquelky-inspired leader. Not! He is a fallible man, and the history of the Church proves popes are as often as not problems. The institution itself safeguards the Church from defining error: it does not assure us of divine programs or wise initiatives. For Dr. Echeverria to promote the idea the Francis is in incontestable conformity with Tradition, and to ignore viable scholarship such as that of DeMattei simply because he finds it negative... Well, its a glossing over on data worthy of the Obama White House. Both Pope Francis and Obama seem like good men. Both to me also seem quite misguided. My comments are no "hatchet job," despite Echeverria's earlier protestations. HE may be wishing for the applause of uninformed layman, and he will likely get it. The impulse to defend the Pope is not a bad one. But As a communication scholar and researcher in historical theology, I simply have to demur from his vigorous insistence that all is well with the Holy Father's program for the Church. Interestingly, most of the voices normally ready to defend Rome are these days more hesitant if not discouraged. That fact should tell humble hearts they may need to to a little more diverse listening and reading themselves.* I wrote this last night and lo and behold, William Odie rings in with similar sentiments this morning. All of which is only to argue that Dr. Echeverria's choice to not discuss negative data outside his opening and closing chapters ignores the very concern that would make his book more helpful. And in these days of auto-publishing, I will add, a 'small' publishing house sounds essentially very much like the same thing as self-publishing. If I am wrong he was paid for his book project, I stand corrected on that specific note. But that aside, I find this more hagiographical than analytical no matter how dense the footnotes. And now that Francis wants to rubber stamp annulments, I am a bit scandalized at E.E.'s holier-than-thou defense of The Holy Father. Some observations are so common-sensical, you have to winder at those going to such pains to circumvent them. Unless they have s take in their role in The Academy. Which this author most unfortunately does. Unless he chimes in to say he is donating all profits it immigrants, as his Pope Francis would advise....

About the Author Mike Mignola was born September 16, 1960 in Berkeley, California and grew up in nearby Oakland. His fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age and reading Dracula at age 13 introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore from which he has never recovered. In 1993 Mike moved to Dark Horse comics and created Hellboy, a half-demon occult detective who may or may not be the Beast of the Apocalypse. While the first story line Seed of Destruction, was co-written by John Byrne, Mike has continued writing the series himself. There are, at this moment, numerous Hellboy graphic novel collections with more on the way, several spin-off titles (BPRD, Lobster Johnson, Abe Sapien and Witchfinder), three anthologies of prose stories, several novels, two animated films, and two live action films staring Ron Perlman. Hellboy has earned numerous comic industry awards and is published in a great many countries. The author lives in Los Angeles, CA..

This collection is so much better than trying to read it from single comic books (Which is what I've been doing for years. I just found out about this format last month.)It's a bit heavy, so have a good bed or desk to lay the book one while you read it.

Both times I received the book the binding was already broken. I don't know if its a manufacturing defect of just bad shipping. I have had problems in the past with amazons packing and receiving damages books. Anyways great story just maybe go for the paperback with this one.

Every volume is packed full of excellent art, characters you care about, stories that can make you feel giddy or bum you out to no end. The books are incredibly high quality from the page thickness to the binding, these are going to stand the test of time (or multiple people reading them a few times a piece). Big props to Dark Horse for making these books so high quality and affordable. Thank you!

Review “A distinctive blend of mocking humor, penetrating insight, and calculated outrageousness.” —Jerome Clark

From the Publisher

From the Back Cover The Book of the Damned has inspired scientists, science fiction writers, moviemakers, and devotees for almost a hundred years. The damned data Charles Fort gathered covered so many marvels, mysteries, and monsters--including unidentified aerial objects, frog falls, ship disappearances, red rains, earthquake lights, lake monsters, animal mutilations, psychic explosions, and much, much more.

Hailed as the man who kick-started modern day scepticism for the findings and conclusions of mainstream science, Charles Fort is actually a man who is paid more tribute now than ever before with the advent of alternative archaeology and science in general and with more and more people (researchers, scientists or not) actually doubting some of our more precious scientific dogmas. This book is a celebration of humor as well as scepticism, the humor part being the one which most people have greatly misunderstood about C.Fort.Fort takes literally 100s of examples of bizzare unexplained phenomena such as things falling from the sky (ranging from frogs or fish to metal objects) to spontaneous combustion, to unidentified flying objects, to time travel among others and actually exposes science's comical "answers" to these phenomena. Frogs that have been rained by the sky or fish for that matter are not a phenomenon that has stopped. It still happens. The "official explanation" remains as hilarious as it was back in Fort's times, namely: a hurricane or a whirlwind picks them up and "rains" them somewhere else. However, why these winds are selective in what they pick up remains unaswered by science. The usual and continuing up to this day explanation about UFOs which concerns mass illusion or the classic "weather baloon" explanation is picked up by Fort and given the ridiculing treatment it deserves. What makes Fort such a classic and cult figure is his ability to use subtle (mostly) but lethal sarcasm to debunk the dogmatic and more than often funny explanations that scientists offer when cornered with occurences that dont fit or even shutter their sacred theories. Fort's intention is none other than to highlight our trait of mixing cluelessness with arrogance and at the same time to trigger openmindedness or more importantly thinking for oneself and not religiously depending on science to shape the answers so that they fit the question. The problem that Fort brings out with the "Book of the damned" is one that persists today as well. With Darwinistic theories being heavily challenged, with the Bing Bang theory being literally taken apart by daring scientists, and with Quantum physics proving that the "unthinkable" might actually be very thinkable indeed it's the Fortean spirit celebrated all over again on a grand scale.Fort's critics (and they aren't few) take his theories the way they take the theories of mainstream science as well: for granted. Fort offers in this book for example a theory of a "super Sargasso sea" where all these living organisms keep falling from. One would have to be tremendously lacking in humour or imagination not to gather that Fort is yanking the collective chain here. What he does say in reality is: "if you can offer such a ridiculous theory about this phenomenon (insert unexplained phenomenon here) then i might as well add my own which by no means is less or more serious but it's nevertheless just as unproven as yours". It's as simple as that really and Fort uses this technique repeateadly in his "Book of the damned" calling damned those who "dare" refuse official dogma. There has been much criticism as well concerning the overwhelming bulk of paradigms that Fort uses in this book and the critics are probably right in this case. There was no need for such volume as the point would easily get across with 1/3 of these examples. But that aside, this is in fact a book way, way ahead of its time. It's funny how a man can be thrown to the pyre exactly because he uses his humour to dismiss our fear of not being able to explain the world around us. It's even funnier that we keep insisting we can despite alarming failures. The "Book of the damned" is a grand example of a brave mind. The problem with brave minds is that they are usually shoved under the gigantic rug tagged "truth" for a very long time before anyone recognises their impact.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. The First UFO Investigator By M. A Michaud This book, one of four he published before passing away in 1932, exploits Fort's research into reports of peculiar things in the sky or fallen from the sky to challenge the authority of establishment science. He describes the book as an assemblage of data of external relations of this earth, "damned" by those who hold for our planet's isolation. According to Fort, the attitude of Science and Christian Science toward the unwelcome is the same: it does not exist. Some of the events described in these reports would be described today as UFO's. While some of these cases may warrant attention, others seem marginal.Fort hypothesizes that "there is somewhere aloft a place" where life may have orginated; "evolution on this earth has been induced by external influences." He offers alternative explanations for unexplained sightings: another world that is in secret communication with certain "esoteric" inhabitants of this earth; other worlds that are trying to establish communication with all the inhabitants of the earth; other worlds and vast structures that pass us by without the slightest desire to communicate; a vast construction that has often come to this earth, dipped into an ocean, then gone away. At one point, Fort writes that the earth was a no-man's land explored and colonized by other worlds; now something owns this earth, warning off all others. All this, he goes on, has been known, perhaps for ages, to certain ones upon the earth. It is hard to know how much of this is serious and how much is just satire. Fort's imagined super-constructions a few miles above the earth stretch credibility too far. His quirky writing style, though sometimes entertaining, tends to further undermine his believability. Nonetheless, anyone wanting to read into the UFO phenomenon may find this book useful background.

By A Customer This is not a new book, but was written sometime around the turn of century and has been considered a classic on most 'required reading' lists. A spoof on the awe in which society holds the Holy Writs of the scientific community, the author marshalled an impressive army of established, documented facts for which the official scientific explanations are simply absurd. A 'must read' for anyone who believes science teaches The Truth -- or for anyone who suspects otherwise.

The Political Writings of Eva Gore-Booth is a compilation of writings by this important Irish political activist. This is the first time that Gore-Booth's writings have been published together. The volume includes a fascinating array of letters, political pamphlets, newspaper articles and poetry relating to key aspects of Irish and British events of the early twentieth century. The volume is presented in three sections focussing on Women's suffrage and women's trade unionism; Pacifism and Conscientious Objection during World War One and Irish Nationalism before independence. The writings are transcribed in full and include detailed contextual footnotes. The vast majority of these writings are out of print and difficult to source. Many of the writings were published by independent sources or radical political organisations as penny pamphlets and copies are therefore rare. Some of the writings are previously unpublished or, due to strict codes of wartime censorship, were never widely circulated. Publication of these writings provides a greater understanding of Gore-Booth's work but perhaps even more importantly, this publication adds greatly to the body of research available on issues which are, to date, often under researched. Topics which were viewed as controversial in the early twentieth century such as conscientious objectors in WWI, the death penalty in Ireland and England and the development of women's trade unions, have often suffered from a lack of available source material. The Political Writings of Eva Gore-Booth adds greatly to a perspective of Irish identity, both in relation to Irish history and Irish influences on English political movements.

The Political Writings of Eva Gore-Booth, by Sonja Tiernan

Review 'Sonja Tiernan, author of the first biography of Eva Gore-Booth, has now produced an excellent edition of her political writings. After meticulous historical research, she has assembled a series of fascinating pieces that demonstrate how Gore-Booth was able to combine her radical concern for equal pay for working women with the demand for suffrage, the quest for peace, and support for Irish Independence. Gore-Booth's complexity, political nuance and clarity of mind are on display in this indispensable compilation.' Professor Elizabeth Cullingford, The University of Texas at Austin 'Here for the first time, the reader can see in full Eva's articles and poetry on women's suffrage, trade unions and women's right to work campaigns. These will be a valuable resource for teaching and studying women's history.' Jill Liddington, Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Leeds -- .

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Impressive research and useful analysis By Andrew S. Rogers Although not explicitly intended as a companion volume to editor Sonja Tiernan's 2012 biography Eva Gore-Booth: An image of such politics, I think that's how this impressive collection functions best. Certainly my copy of the biography now includes, next to mentions of or quotations from Eva's writings, my annotations of the relevant page numbers in the Political Writings. Making those connections would have been easier had this book listed the writings by title in either a table of contents or an index (many are sub-indexed under media type: "articles by Gore-Booth," "pamphlets by Gore-Booth," etc.), but they are listed chronologically under large umbrella topics. This book would be impressive enough if it were just a collection of Eva Gore-Booth's writings: Since many of those works, particularly from Eva's early years in trade-union activism, were topical pamphlets not intended to have a long lifespan, finding those works and reprinting them here is itself an achievement. But the book includes a useful introduction, and each of the three main parts includes the editor's scholarly review of the content and context of Eva's work. As the frequent appearance of Tiernan's own name in the listing of "Selected Works about Eva Gore-Booth" at the back shows, Tiernan must be the preeminent expert on Eva's life today. This book isn't just an appendix to the biography, but an important addition to the historical record in its own right.
