Didn't like James to start off with, but that's probably the point Ms Lamb was trying to make, that he needed to change his attitdues. Patience and her sisters and brothers are adorable characters. An easy read. I read most of it while my husband was in with the dentist :)

I have to tell you at first I wasn't sure about this one but it turned out to be one of my favorites. James is the classic male who is hard on the outside but really has a soft spot in his heart. Patience was delightful and so where the kids. I have read alot of books by Charlotte Lamb and this is by far one of her better ones. It was funny and the story was beautiful

No storyline, no dating, no passion. It was difficult to finish the book. Do not waste your time. Patience and James do not have a storyline worth reading.

Don't let the age of the book scare you. The wisdom and comfort of the message is timeless. If you are going through difficult times and trials you will find wisdom in Cuyler's words. He writes in a time when life was short and most families knew what it was to lose children because of disease. Cuyler lost both a son and a daughter.

About the Author Rainer Maria Rilke (also Rainer Maria von Rilke) (4 December 1875 - 29 December 1926) is considered one of the German language's greatest 20th century poets. His haunting images focus on the difficulty of communion with the ineffable in an age of disbelief, solitude, and profound anxiety - themes that tend to position him as a transitional figure between the traditional and the modernist poets. He wrote in both verse and a highly lyrical prose. His two most famous verse sequences are the Sonnets to Orpheus and the Duino Elegies; his two most famous prose works are the Letters to a Young Poet and the semi-autobiographical The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge. He also wrote more than 400 poems in French, dedicated to his homeland of choice, the canton of Valais in Switzerland.

68 of 70 people found the following review helpful. Background on This Translation By Lewis Hyde Rilke's letters to Franz Kappus were written between 1903 and 1908. They were first published in German in 1929. In 1934 H. D. Herter Norton produced the first English translation (revised by her in 1954). The second English translation that I know of was done by Reginald Snell in 1945 and published in London by Sidgwick and Jackson. The edition being offered here is the Snell translation--only his name and the original publication data have been stripped from the book. (Other than that, the book is essentially a photocopy of the 1945 edition.)The publisher here is "BN Publishing" which I assume means "Barnes & Noble" (although the "about us" link on their website says almost nothing about them!).The Snell translation seems to me quite adequate. Here is a sample of one sentence done by three translators:"And this more human love...will resemble that which we are preparing with struggle and toil, the love that consists in this, that two solitudes protect and border and salute each other." -- H. D. Herter Norton (1934)"And this more human love...will be something like that which we are preparing with struggle and toil, the love which consists in the mutual guarding, bordering and saluting of two solitudes." -- Reginald Snell (1945)"And this more human love... will resemble what we are now preparing painfully and with great struggle: the love that consists in this: that two solitudes protect and border and greet each other." -- Stephen Mitchell (1984)Of these three, the Norton seems to me to have the best cadence, but beyond that Rilke's sense is present in all.One does wonder, however, why BN Publishing felt free to erase this book's origins.One other oddity to note: If you click on "see inside this book," Amazon shows you the Stephen Mitchell edition, not the Snell edition, giving this rather confusing explanation: "This view is of the Mass Market Paperback edition (1986) from Vintage. I can't recommend it enough.That said, the Kindle version is indefensibly poorly-done. There are paragraph breaks, and that's the extent of its formatting. The book should be outstandingly simple to format correctly. It's an introduction followed by ten letters. However, this version simply runs together, making it difficult to read and parse through. Purchase the physical version. You'll be glad you did.

By Lou Paschall We are often told that we are in a storm currently, have just come out of one, or are heading into another one. Kristin takes the reader one step further to help the person prepare a response to storms that will be pleasing to God. I believe the Holy Spirit is using her and her book to help Christians renew their minds. This book was a tremendous blessing to me and I highly recommend it to you. Most readable account of history, culture, religion of Egypt By A Customer Breasted's account of the history, culture, and religion of ancient Egypt stands, to this day, as a rare example of scientific writing that is also tremenduously entertaining to read. Never dry, this book is lively, vividly evoking images of the subjects described. Though research into ancient Egypt in the decades since this book was originally written has made many important discoveries, the essential value of this book, its capability to enlighten the reader on one of the great cultures of human civilization, has not diminished.As a writer, Breasted might have excelled at almost any genre of literature he might have selected. His work as a serious historian allowed him to use his skill as a writer to make otherwise perhaps esoteric material available to a broad range of readers, asking not much more from the reader than the capability to simply enjoy a good book.

20 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating (but maybe outdated) By Bibliophile My copy is the Bantam 1964 reprint of the 1905 classic. Almost a hundred years old, this book still reads surprisingly easily. Whether it's out of date or not, I'm in no position to judge, not being an expert in this field. But I'd assume that a lot of archaeological discoveries must have been made in the last century to make this book somewhat obsolete.Breasted was the first and foremost American Egyptologist, the founder of the prestigious Oriental Institute of Chicago (the premier archaeology academy in America - featured in Indiana Jones), and the first archaeologist elected to the National Academy of Sciences.(He was also a former President of the American Historical Association, and must have been the only person to have both honors.) I particularly like his opinions of Thuthmosis III, whose 3450th passing is today.Two other books that may shed some light on the recent findings are "Egypt of the Pharaohs" by Sir Alan Gardiner and "The Oxford History of Ancient Egypt" edited by Ian Shaw.

The content of A History of Egypt is without peer and essential to ones understanding of this ancient civilization. However, the reproduction of the original text and photographs is unworthy of its author and his work. Broken type, such as many a dot-less lower-case "i" and arm-less lower case "r" is a constant irritant and source of confusion throughout its 600 pages. The original photographs have lost much valuable detail, bordering on worthlessness. A long-ago reader's inane underlining, imbedded in the source text, is carefully preserved in defiance of our digital age. Surely a better source copy could have been found resulting in a cleaner edition, I am appalled to think that Amazon would permit such a shoddy reproduction to leave its premises without due warning.

I, however, have the Kindle edition, and the diagrams and figures are small and occasionally difficult to see is detail, a requirement for a geometry text. Had I realized this, I would have gotten the print edition. I have not seen the print edition, however, so I cannot comment if that criticism holds. Otherwise, an excellent book.

RYDER's WIFE is about a business woman who must marry someone w/in 48 hours to keep her business, so she marries the first guy she comes across in a Mississippi roadhouse.Believable, workable plot? Of course not! But that's the fun of it!You will enjoy the falling-in-love process between Ryder and Casey, and I bet you will want to keep this book to read again.This was my first Sharon Sala book, and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Over the last few years Silhouette's quality has been slipping, but RYDER's WIFE is a cute fantasy and worth the $4.

Whitley Author Lyle Blackburn leaves no stone - or in this case, swamp lillypad - unturned in his investigation into the Bishopville Lizard Man. Just as he did in "The Beast of Boggy Creek: The True Story of the Fouke Monster," the author visits the stomping grounds of the Bishopville beast and speaks to eyewitnesses and other locals who were caught up in the monster mayhem that engulfed this small South Carolina town in 1988. The end result is an incredibly well-written and researched page-turner that's hard to put down. Whether man, misidentification, myth, or actual muck monster, the Lizard Man is a localized legend that finally gets its due in this fantastic tome. Highly recommended. This book was really a great article stretched out into a small book. If you're interested in adding something different to your crypto library, then this would make an unusual addition. I read Mr. Blackburn's first book about the Boggy Creek Monster about a year ago and was very impressed. His research was top notch and the writing clear and to the point. This, his latest book, focuses on the late 1980's sightings of what was best described as a bipedal half man, half lizard in a South Carolina county and just like his first book, is a concise, well written account of those events and the people who saw this strange entity. In no way does he belittle the witnesses yet searches out all the possibilities of what the creature could have really been. He also goes to other parts of the country in search of other such sighting, some of which have been documented previously, included in this book in order to bring home the point that this was just not a case of local "mass hysteria", but something that has happened in other parts fo the country as well. The chapter on the media coverage of the events was a fascinating look into how the main stream media, then and now, regard such events and those who report them. One of the last chapters is a follow up on the witnesses and the events following their sightings, something not usually done in most works of this kinds. The map in front of the book as well done and the illustrations are some of the best I have seen in a crypto creature book. This is a must have for any fan of the strange, off beat or cryptozoological.

Pedro Antonio Joaquín Melitón de Alarcón y Ariza fue un narrador español que perteneció al movimiento realista en el que destacó como uno de los artífices del fin de la prosa romántica, tuvo una intensa vida ideológica; como sus personajes, evolucionó de las ideas liberales y revolucionarias a posiciones más tradicionalistas. Aunque su familia provenía de hidalgos era más bien humilde, aunque no tanto como para no poder permitirse enviarlo a estudiar Derecho en la Universidad de Granada, carrera que abandonó pronto para iniciarse en la eclesiástica. Aquello tampoco le satisfizo y abandonó en 1853 para marchar a Cádiz, donde funda El Eco de Occidente, junto a Torcuato Tárrago y Mateos, iniciando su carrera periodística en la dirección de este periódico. Alarcón escribía desde su adolescencia, citándose a don Isidro Cepero como el instigador principal de su inquietud literaria. Su primera obra narrativa, El final de Norma, fue compuesta a los 18 años y publicada en 1855. Sus inquietudes le llevaron a integrarse en el grupo que se llamó la Cuerda granadina.

Un cuento encantador By Medimundo No puedo imaginar una narración más encantadora que la que nos brinda don Pedro Antonio de Alarcón en El sombrero de tres picos. El autor toma los hilos variantes de una antigua «historieta vulgar» de la tradición oral española y junta carne a los huesos de la leyenda de El corregidor y la molinera para crear su versión literaria y definitiva. Aquí no hay nada de profundidad, sólo un cuento sumamente bien tramado y narrado de tal manera que el lector, como un niño escuchando a su abuelo contarle historias, se pierde en la magia de la voz de Alarcón.Alarcón escribió un prefacio de El sombrero en el que habla de como y cuando escuchó por primera vez la historieta en que se basa. Lamentablemente el prefacio no figura en esta edición. También hay tal vez media docena de palabras mal deletreadas o mal espaciadas. Una curiosidad: hay dos notas a pie—definiciones de las palabras caz y trabuco. ¿Por qué solamente estas dos? A pesar de estos comentarios, la presentación de la página imprenta es generalmente excelente y facil de leer, y el precio es razonable. ¡Cinco estrellas con entusiasmo!

Burbank a donc fort à faire pour défendre sa plantation, sa famille et lui-même contre Texar, en attendant que les " fédéraux, nordistes, anti-esclavagistes, unionistes" ne viennent prendre le contrôle de la Floride. Dans ce roman, Verne se montre résolument anti-esclavagiste et laisse également voir toute l'admiration qu'il a pour le peuple américain. Publié en 1887 en deux parties, un an après la mort de son éditeur Hetzel, Nord contre sud fait partie des soixante-deux Voyages Extraordinaires. Extrait : Le Nord devait donc trouver contre lui non seulement les riches propriétaires, mais aussi ces petits Blancs qui, surtout dans les campagnes,vivaient au milieu de la population serve. La lutte fut donc effroyable. Elle produisit même dans les familles de telles dissensions que l’on vit des frères combattre, l’un sous le drapeau confédéré, l’autre sous le drapeau fédéral. Mais un grand peuple ne devait pas hésiter à détruire l’esclavage jusque dans ses racines. Dès le siècle dernier, l’illustre Franklin en avait demandé l’abolition. En 1807, Jefferson avait recommandé au Congrès « de prohiber un trafic dont la moralité, l’honneur et les plus chers intérêts du pays exigeaient depuis longtemps la disparition ». Le Nord eut donc raison de marcher contre le Sud et de le réduire. D’ailleurs, il allait s’ensuivre une union plus étroite entre tous les éléments de la république, et la destruction de cette illusion si funeste, si menaçante, que chaque citoyen devait d’abord obéissance à son propre État, et, seulement en second lieu, à l’ensemble de la fédération américaine. Or, ce fut précisément en Floride, que se réveillèrent les premières questions relatives à l’esclavage. Au commencement de ce siècle, un chef indien métis, nommé Oscéola, avait pour femme une esclave marronne, née dans ces parties marécageuses du territoire floridien qu’on nomme Everglades. Un jour, cette femme fut ressaisie comme esclave et emmenée par force. Oscéola souleva les Indiens, commença la campagne anti-esclavagiste, fut pris et mourut dans la forteresse où on l’avait enfermé. Mais la guerre continua, et, dit l’historien Thomas Higginson, « la somme d’argent que nécessita une pareille lutte fut trois fois plus considérable que celle qui avait été jadis payée à l’Espagne pour l’acquisition de la Floride »...

A graphic novel with flair By Don Sloan Psychic Boy Samuel has his work cut out for him, what with fighting venom-rich, marauding armies and dueling dragons. But wait. I'm getting ahead of the story in this excellent graphic novel, superbly written and illustrated by author Beau Breems.When first we meet Samuel, he is shrinking beneath the baleful glare of Mr. Green, who is waiting impatiently for his two buckets of water that Samuel had been sent to fetch. "Daydreamin' again?" Mr. Green accuses. And Samuel can only hang his head and agree.But on the way home, he encounters some very real local bullies trying to take advantage of winsome and defenseless Sarah Caster, and he intervenes, using psychokinetic powers he didn't know he had. Swoop! Aaaahhh! The bad guys are routed and Sarah and Samuel become fast friends.The weeks fly by and Samuel refines his new skills, which now include the instant ignition of fire -- on command. He and Sarah's love interest episodes are repeatedly -- and comically -- interrupted by Crazy, Samuel's talking chicken.Then, Samuel's idyllic village is invaded by an evil horde of totally buff vipers, showing off their fangs and sixpacks under open leather vests. The town's residents are herded off to captivity. Sadly, all of Samuel's new superpowers are overwhelmed and he is also imprisoned.Can Samuel find the strength to break out of prison and rescue the villagers? And what of the story's overarching threat of the Cobras' desire to conquer the entire country?The author has done a masterful job of telling - and professionally illustrating -- a compelling narrative that returns older readers to their comic book roots, and giving younger readers a unique new superhero to root for.Five stars to this talented storyteller and artist, who will undoubtedly continue this powerful tale in the near future.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding graphic novel!! By Barbee Cee Psychic Boy Samuel is an engaging story of adventure and good versus. evil. The reader is pulled into the adventure with Samuel, Sarah and Crazy (chicken) from the beginning. The chapter summaries are really helpful and give the book a video game feel. But apart from the story, Beau Breems’ art is amazing!! I love how the illustrations include outlandish angles and go from micro to macro perspective. And the “boom” and “thud” sound effects are in there, too!

LATE MAUPASSANT By myshiak Chronologically "Strong as Death/Fort comme la Mort" (first published in 1889) is the penultimate novel by Maupassant and the subject-matter of his late literary productions was much more narrow than that of his early ones. The plot in which a painter first falls in love with a countess, but later is tormented by his love for her daughter, because the daughter bears a physical resemblance of the mother (in her juvenile period the daughter looked absolutely identical to the mother, when the painter's love toward the latter started to grow) gives a lot of material for musing on the topic of love. The title is borrowed from the Bible, where the love is said to be as "strong as death". Nevertheless, the main idea here seems to be not that people of art tend to fall desperately in love and that their love may take eccentric forms, but that delving into something monotonous allows no room for novelty and, consequently, may destroy creative forces.
