Description By bargainz He wanted an heir more than a wife! The rigid conventions of Morley Grange had driven Emma's grandmother into exile when she had dared love a man beneath her social station. Now Emma had returned to her ancestral home and found love with the present master of Morley. Only Emma wasn't at all sure her grandmother would have approved! For although Emma loved Craig Stafford deeply, he had proposed to her only because he wanted a son and she satisfied his family's standards.Would marrying him be the worst mistake of her life?

Two years since the dead rose and the plague of ex-humanity decimated mankind. For most of that time, the superhero called St. George, formerly known to the world as the Mighty Dragon, has protected the people of Los Angeles at their film studio-turned-fortress, The Mount. Together with his fellow heroes―Cerberus, Zzzap, and Stealth―he’s tried to give the survivors hope and something like a real life. But the swollen population of the Mount is becoming harder and harder to sustain, and the heroes are feeling the pressure.

Hope arrives in the form of a United States Army battalion, based in a complex a few hundred miles away in Arizona. This is not just any base, however. The men and women of Project Krypton are super-soldiers, designed and created before the outbreak to be better, stronger, and faster than normal humans. They want the heroes and all the people of the Mount to rejoin America and have normal lives again.

But can the military be trusted? And is there even a country left to rejoin? There is a secret at the heart of Project Krypton, and those behind it have an awesome power that will help them keep that secret hidden. The power of Freedom.

Doubleshot Reviews book review By Heather Faville Ex-Patriots by Peter Clines was calling my name after having just finished reading Ex-Heroes and, boy howdy, did it deliver. Packed with every bit as much action as it's predecessor, Ex-Patriots introduces us to the Unbreakables, a group of super soldiers led by Freedom a true American patriot, Dr Sorensen, the doctor who figured out how to create the super soldiers and Mr. Smith, the man who is behind the notion of having super soldiers. There are other new characters, including a new Hero and, of course Zzzap, St George, Stealth and Cerberus are back to entertain us. (YAY for a Buffy reference and a special 'cameo' of a Whedonverse alum)Initially I thought the plot of Ex-Patriots was going to be extremely cliche and was not necessarily going to give up hope, but was not going to hold my breath that Ex-Patriots would be nearly as good as Ex-Heroes. I was wrong...in my opinion, it was better. It would be best for a reader to read the books in order, as there is not a lot of character development for the Heroes we were introduced to in the first book. I do not want to say much more about the book, because I don't want to chance any type of spoiler...as I said there was an element of predictability to the plot, but then all of a sudden KERPOW! I was hit with a HOLY GUACAMOLE, BATMAN moment, thus not wanting to chance spoilers.Fast paced, full of action, humor and heroism, Ex-Patriots is a zombie/superhero book for true American readers (and anyone out of States, too).

Peter Clines took the zombie/post-apocalyptic world by storm with his debut novel Ex-Heroes, which chronicled the zombie apocalypse through the eyes of a fascinating cast of superheroes. Now Clines is back with Ex-Patriots, the highly anticipated sequel to Ex-Heroes.St. George, Stealth, Cerberus and Zzzap have largely established a safe zone in the part of L.A. they control, with the zombies - sorry, ex-humans - kept at a distance from the living. They're soon taken out of that safe zone when a military plane makes contact. The heroes find out that they're not the only super-powered beings to survive the apocalypse. At a secret military installation, the government has been creating their own super-soldiers, plus a few other disturbing projects.Ex-Heroes was a very effective novel, giving us realistic and unforgettable characters, both good, evil and points in-between, not to mention sharp dialogue, plenty of unexpected twists, and a truly epic final confrontation. With Ex-Patriots, Clines delivers all of that and more, adding government intrigue, secret plots, and even more powerful characters. The book hooks you from the very first page, and is one of those rare novels that you feel completely compelled to barrel through to the end. Encountering St. George and company was like catching up with old friends, and new characters like Captain Freedom and his team are instant favorites.Once again Clines delivers the perfect mix of action, super-heroics, intrigue and of course all-out zombie mayhem. If you were a fan of Ex-Heroes, Ex-Patriots is an absolute must-have. It's by far the best post-apocalyptic book released this year (and that's saying something), and is just a great story overall. It also sets up book 3 - Ex-Communication - quite nicely, though waiting for that one is going to be difficult!Disclosure - I was given an electronic copy of this book by the publisher for reviewing purposes.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A sequel that is better than the first. By W. Collins I have to admit I gave the first book 4 stars- it was good, well written (and to the nitpickers, its fiction. okay?) and the pop culture references were a lot of fun. Never been a huge zombie fan, but Clines mythology is fascating (esp the 'how they came to be' explanation is startling). Now to 'ex-patriots' .... the plotting was good/interesting/basic...until HOLY SMOKE! Did Clines just do what I THINK he did? DANG. Talk about a writer who can pull it together. I was torn between dragging out reading this book to make it last or sitting down and chewing threw in one big GULP. Really nice work on existing characters- I really like how he is....humanizing Stealth- more than what you think there, showing a wacky human-er side to Zzzap (love the pop culture references (to someone who watches movies all day (Zzzap, not me)...and some of the newer characters. The alternating then/now takes takes some getting used to, but Clines does a nice job of feeding us bits and character pieces that really enhance our knowledge fascinatingly. Captain Freedom being a nice example- instead of a stock character we get some really interesting shading on this 'hero'. Ditto Dr Sorensen, we are never quite sure if he is 'mad/angry', 'mad/looney' or 'mad/scary' or just flat out nuts...or is he?If you remotely liked the first book, this is a MUST read. Please read in order. The plot twist is a true hum-dinger, one of those 'glad I wasn't in a diner so no one could hear me exclaim "Damnnnnnnn, didn't see that one coming" (for the record I am writing this review having read 89% of the book).

The frantic forties-a time when the comic book industry was young and anything was possible. Stories from this "Golden Age" of comics had an "anything goes" quality-perhaps none more so than the freewheeling antics of Archie Andrews and his friends. Now by popular demand, we're pleased to serve up a second helping of 1940s fun and frolics for the many readers who enjoyed the original ARCHIE AMERICANA SERIES: BEST OF THE FORTIES! From the Trade Paperback edition.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. SOME OF ARCHIE'S WACKIEST ADVENTURES! By Tim Janson While the first volume of "The Best of the Forties" concentrated on presenting the first appearances of Archie and the rest of the gang, the second volume is strictly slapstick. All of the stories from this volume are reprinted from Laugh Comics while the first re-printed stories from Pep, and Archie comics. The girls take a bit of a back seat in these dozen stories as Jughead becomes the main co-star. Even Mr. Andrews gets more strip time than Betty and Veronica. The stories are more slapstick, than other Archie stories relying on a lot of physical humor. While maybe not as historically important as the one in volume one, these stories present a side of Archie rarely seen by us baby boomers who were so used to adventures centered on Riverdale High and the ongoing love triangle. In this regard, the stories are less time-sensitive and could easily be dropped into modern times as references to current events of the 40's are kept to a bare minimum.Among my favorite stories are:"Mr. Blunk Comes to Town" from Laugh #21. Archie's dad is, of course, a real estate agent and a man named Mr. Blunk comes to town to buy a seemingly worthless plot of land. Unfortunately, Archie takes the contract out on his date by mistake. Through a series of car breakdowns and other mishaps, Mr. Andrews and Archie keep missing each other which turns out to be a good thing as Mr. Andrews soon learns that oil was found on the land and Blunk knew about it all along!"Go Fly a Kite" from Laugh #23. Archie and Jughead are trying to build a kite and their racket disturbs their fathers. Soon Mr. Andrew and Mr. Jones take over building the kite with disastrous results."Double Trouble" From Laugh #25. Archie wonders why the new girl in school, Alice Adams changes from nice to mean to him at the drop of a hat. What Archie doesn't know is that the girls are twins!"It's a Dog's Life" from Laugh #27. Archie and Jughead agree to bathe Veronica's dog. Jughead grabs hair remover instead of shampoo by mistake resulting in a hairless pooch right before the big dog show!"Lady Killer" from Laugh #28. Archie decides to start an escort service to earn some extra money. He doesn't want to be recognized as a kid so wears a beard and dark hair to disguise himself. His first customer named "Peaches" turns out to be Miss Grundy! The pair go out to a nightclub and Archie has to dodge Reggie and Veronica who are there as well."Nature Boy" from Laugh #36. Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica go out on a picnic and in wild slapstick fashion, virtually everything goes wrong from Jughead smashing a cake, to Archie burning the burgers, Betty and Veronica sitting in poison ivy, and Jughead playing with a skunk! While maybe not as historically important, these stories were very funny and a change to those of us who only knew Archie from the 60's and 70's.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The 'b-sides' from the 1940's By Sibelius Not quite as fresh as the previous volume - "Archie Americana: Best of the Forties, Book 1," but still a must read for the die-hard Archie afficionado. While Book 1 was lovingly crafted to showcase material with historic value (e.g. - the first appearance of key characters, locations, etc.), Book 2 comes across a bit more lightweight in comparison as the stories seem selected more for the zaniness of its humor and the timeframe that the stories were selected from (1946-1949) seems somewhat narrower. Still, this being Archie comics and all, it still manages to be an enjoyable read all the way through, but do make sure that you read/purchase Book 1 first.

Blacker Roark Navarre, a ruthless business man that wants to buy land that the recently widowed, Countess Lia Villani owns. Roark hopes to build skyscrapers on this land and that these will become his legacy when he is dead. So now all he has to do now is get the countess to agree to sell. So Roark Navarre goes to the charity ball held in the Countess's honor. There he meets and bids for a dance with the beautiful, dignified, and young countess. Roark of course wrongly assumes that Lia is a gold-digger, who had married her much older husband just for all of his worldly goods. Lia seems to be the one that gets away when she actually runs away from Roark. Well it seems Roark likes a challenge and for revenge he believes he will get her property and her in his bed...Lia ends up giving him her virginity before she even knows his name. Once she knows his name she realises this is the same man who ruined her family over 10 years ago. What is she to do now that she is pregnant with his child? A man who is ruthless and cold-hearted, and doesn't want children.(SPOILERS) If you don't like the older Harlequin presents authors you might not like this book. Male lead is a bit of a bastard, (no he's actually a complete bastard). Loved the book even with the male character.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Give it a miss - unlovable hero and a heroine without backbone By Lia All in all I was thoroughly disappointed by this book. In all honesty, I only picked it up for vanity reasons to begin with: the heroine and I share a first name and my name isn't all that common.Thankfully, the first name is all that I share with the heroine. She is a complete pushover and her reasons for loving Roark and marrying him are completely beyond me. I also did not understand why she married an old Italian man after the passing of her parents, the reasons stated in the book did not strike me as valid reasons and if the old Italian guy was as nice as she claimed it was, he would have helped Lia without her marrying him.Roark is just a completely unlovable guy and in their marriage he treats Lia as if she is his personal prostitute. No amount of bad childhood the guy had suffered can justify his treatment of Lia. Which made it impossible for me to believe she loved him.Secret baby plots are not amongst my favorites, but if written well, can be appealing. However, the Innocent Dark Seduction is not of them. With Lia's lack of backbone and Roark's complete and utter lack of lovability, they probably deserve each other.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. what the By The Critic The writing was superb and the setting flowed. I have to say Roark is an ass through and through, to put it in polite terms. While I can understand how wrong it is to deny a man the knowledge that he has a child, Roark made it very clear to Lia that he did not want love, let alone a child. But lo and behold, he's a father! Lia was doing the right thing as a mother by putting her child first, but Roark hated her. His actions to her were so cruel that I almost cried at some parts. What horrible person ignores his wife by day and ruthlessly has sex (notice I did not say make love) with her every night as if she is merely some brood mare? A disgrace to men, thats who! God, Lia is wasting her time and good self by devoting herself to a creep like him.

An Irish Country Christmas (An Irish Country Novel), by Patrick Taylor

From Publishers Weekly Taylor's delightful holiday update to the Irish Country series returns to Ballybucklebo, where Dr. Fingal O'Reilly and junior partner Barry Laverty are still practicing their humorous brand of country medicine. As Christmas draws closer, the two men contend with a variety of comical village ailments and the usual array of Ballybucklebo characters, as well as romantic troubles. O'Reilly is trying to decide if he will allow himself to love again with the vivacious Kitty O'Halloran, and Laverty is distraught because his girlfriend can't seem to make it home for the holidays. Then a new doctor comes to town and causes a ruckus by poaching their patients and prescribing ludicrous cures. This has all the charm of Taylor's previous books and adds Christmas warmth without sacrificing credibility. (Nov.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. You will wish to stay in this place and continue with the setting, the characters and the mood. "An Irish Country Christmas" is certain to shoot to the top of every best seller list with this engaging tale everyone will wish to call their own. Having not read the others in the series this reviewer is anxious to order them and continue the charmed escape to the Irish countryside. If not already thought of, this series cries to be a boxed set full of lovely illustrations. In troubled times, this writing is just what the soul needs!Patrick Taylors' fictional accounts of the life of a pair of Irish country doctors in a day before modern medicine had created a gap between patient and practitioner are continued in this story that leads up to their shared Christmas. It is a Christmas full of all the happiness and goodwill that has been left behind in modern fractionated culture.I'm certain this book has re-read qualities when after a hard played day, a reader just wants to go somewhere that is simple and good. The reader will feel the warmth of Jameson after a cold walk in the snow and hear the sound of carolers when engaged by this worthy read.Erveryone will be left anxious to find out about what a happens to Barry and Patricia or is it Barry and Sue? There is certainly a lot more in store for us in The Irish Country! Patrick Taylor has created something that is not only a worthy read but would make a nice movie or a BBC-Ireland series such as Ballykissangel.Want to take a holiday but can't afford it? Try the Irish Country Series!

Rural charm at its best By Tooncesmom An Irish Country Christmas (Irish Country Books)An Irish Country Christmas is the third book in Patrick Taylor's series that features new doctor Barry Laverty and his senior partner Dr. Fingal O'Reilly. Set in the rural Northern Irish village of Ballybucklebo, Barry looks forward to his first Christmas in the little village. However, when his girlfriend Patricia informs him that she may not be coming to spend the holiday with him, his disappointment mounts. At the same time, Dr. Fingal, who has vowed not to fall in love again, finds himself enormously attracted to the lovely Kitty O'Hallorhan. Meanwhile, Barry has his hands full with seasonal ailments and the occasional medical emergency. Still, they find time to play Santa to a needy mother with a sick child and make the rounds of rugby parties and kiddie Christmas festivities. When a new doctor arrives in the village, Barry wonders if there can possibly be enough business to support three doctors, but that's not his only worry. It seems Dr. Fitzpatrick, in spite of apparent quackery and questionable cures, is quite adept at stealing Barry's and Fingal's patients. The charm of rural Ireland shines in this story of these two engaging doctors who find time to help the villagers in many ways. Ballybucklebo is rife with interesting, comedic characters. The story is chock full of humorous episodes, an array of odd village ailments, and romantic troubles. Despite a tendancy to over-explain, Taylor's wit and charm shine through. An Irish Country Christmas has all the ingredients for a satisfying winter's read. Enjoy.

Cute By Serene Night This was a charming James Herriot-esque story of the life of a country doctor, his older partner, and the residents of a small Irish town. At first I found this tale confusing and a bit slow. But after about 100 pages I began to get into it.I enjoyed in particular the stories about the doctor's patients. The lonely woman who was raised in India, the single mother with the sick child, the couple who was trying to conceive. It was these characters that really brought the story to life.At times I felt some of the dialog could've used some editing. I skimmed parts that I was less interested in: Example: such as the rugby match and the romantic interludes the doctors had. I enjoyed the story of the Christmas pageant and the discussion of Kinky's baked goods. I thought it was a nice touch to have recipes added at the back of the book.I probably will pick up another by this author. Perhaps if I read the series from the beginning I might be more interested in the minor characters such as the doctor's girlfriends who I found less interesting than the protagonist, his partner and their housekeeper.

In this book of essays on his explorations and observations in nature, Joseph Colwell shares his insights, reflections and personal understanding about the natural world. Drawn to the West at an early age, he spent his summers working in state and national parks while earning a degree in wildlife management. His careers as Forest Service Manager and Fire Information Officer on wildland fires took him to every state in the West, while his curiosity kept him seeking answers about this mysterious and magical world. Influenced by John Muir, Sigurd Olson, Aldo Leopold, Loren Eiseley and others, Colwell's 45 years of observing wildlife and listening to the secrets held within our landscapes-coastal bluff, mountain, rock formation, or desert - is an inspired adventure.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. 40 years of experiencing the metaphysical By Bob Conger This book will never be a best seller, although from a metaphysical point of view it should be. Metaphysics has the reputation of being something almost unfathomable when in truth the term can be relatively easy to understand if you bother to think in terms of letters instead of numbers…more on that later. At first even the definition of metaphysics seems difficult indeed; “the branch of philosophy that deals with 1st principles & seeks to explain the nature of being or reality (ontology) & the origin, nature & structure of the universe (cosmology). It is also closely associated with the study of the nature of knowledge (epistemology)”. So in essence metaphysics is broken down into 2 parts, and is closely related to a 3rd. The first part is ontology and is concerned with the study of what it means “to be”. Why are we here? Why did we become what we are? Is there meaning to life, and if so, what could it be? Scientific human reality can only be accessed through our 5 senses of touch, taste, vision, hearing, and smell. Yet we all know there are many more and different scientific realities all around us. Look at any animal other than ourselves. A bat, with its acute sonar capabilities, enjoys a much different reality than humans, one we can never come close to appreciating. Or what about the butterfly, with eyes that are constructed in such a way as to enable vision in all directions at once and have the capacity to see many, many more colors than human eyes? And, of course, these scientific realities, including our own “five senses-limited” reality, are only part of the picture. What about ultimate reality, that reality that is not only composed of scientific reality but that which lies beyond science. The word metaphysics literally means “beyond science”. Ultimate reality is, then, scientific reality (of which we humans can only experience that very small part available to us by our five senses), plus the reality that lies beyond science. Many scientists choose not to attempt to comprehend this second branch of reality, and oppose the validity of its very existence. In their view, if you cannot measure it, if you cannot hold it to the inquiry of the scientific method and reproduce the results of said inquiry, then it cannot exist. Such is the view of scientists like Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and, yes, even the inimitable Stephen Hawking, who famously (and quite embarrassingly for himself) has recently said creation occurred for no reason at all, something just came from nothing and for no reason…magic, if you will. He made this amazing statement because he is incapable of believing in anything beyond science. Since science now “proves” creation did occur (the Big Bang) and since scientists admit that science itself breaks down and literally has no meaning at that quantum event, Hawking reasoned thusly: for something to have caused creation, that something itself would have had to exist before creation, and since there was no such thing as time before creation, this something could not have existed before the Big Bang, because there was no such thing as “before” the Big Bang. What Hawking missed, of course, is that while science does indeed teach us that creation literally created everything, including time, the correct conclusion to reach is that whatever caused this creation must therefore lie outside of time…and therefore outside of science. This other aspect of reality to which I refer goes by names such as religion, the numinous, the spiritual, the metaphysical. The word magisterium denotes a domain of teaching authority. Non-overlapping magisterial (NOMA) is the view advocated by Stephen Jay Gould that science and religion (physics and metaphysics) each represent different areas of inquiry - fact vs. values - so that there is a difference between the "nets" over which they have "a legitimate magisterium, or domain of teaching authority," and these two domains do not overlap. Whether you choose to believe in any “God” or not, there is something else besides science. More and more scientists are being forced to accept this concept due to the discoveries inherent in quantum physics. There is more to our existence than mere science. I predict that within a century the science-limited views of Dawkins, Harris, Dennett, Hawking, et. al. will be relegated to the scrap heap of theories that include the theories of the geocentric universe and the flat earth. The 2nd part of metaphysics concerns cosmology. The Big Bang theory is now universally accepted, and we now know there indeed was a creation. With the advent of quantum physics we know a great deal about how the universe came to be, how and why it took close to 14 billion years to get where it is today, and how all the planets and chemical elements constituting the universe were created. They were literally created from star dust. Science is a wonderful thing…but has its limits. Science describes all the “hows” of the happening of creation. This is, after all, the scientific domain. The other domain, the domain of metaphysics, seeks to explain all of the “whys” of creation. Kepler’s Laws of science describe how the planets orbit the sun. This is the domain of science, of physics. These laws do not explain “why” the planets orbit the sun, or even why the sun and planets exist in the first place. These explanations would lie in the domain of the metaphysical. The two parts of metaphysics, ontology and cosmology, are closely related to epistemology, the nature of knowing. How do we “know” something? What does it mean “to know” vs. “to have a belief”, “to have an opinion or conviction”? Since quantum physics has shown us that absolutely nothing can be 100% proven, what does it mean “to know” anything. Regardless of what some scientists will tell you, it is interesting to note that none of what we say “we know” about science contradicts anything that we say “we know” about that other sphere of influence, that other magisterium predicated by what we refer to as the metaphysical.Mr. Colwell’s book is deeply metaphysical. Some may pick up this book and take it as a travel log of sorts, but it is so much more to those relatively few people that are characterized as having what Plato referred to as the life worth living; so few of us choose to live the examined life. We are either too busy, not busy enough, too bored or too stressed, too tired or too caught up in our hedonistic lifestyle…too caught up in all the mundane reasons we use to muddle through our sometimes dreary yet sometimes exciting science oriented lives. Mr. Colwell has not fallen prey to relegating himself to this level of merely science centered living. He has worked hard over decades for the United States Forestry Service, and has learned the lessons of nature, that great and ultimate announcer of the other part of reality, the numinous. He has understood the difference between the merely beautiful and that which is sublime. He does not appear to be overtly religious in the common sense, with what is popularly referred to as “organized religion”, but he effectively conveys his knowledge of an expanded reality far removed from that of mere science, for he has lived and has allowed himself to experience the wonder and the centeredness of that other non-scientific facet of reality. He is religious at a fundamental level. And now he shares what he has learned over four decades with the readers of his book. If you believe this book is an easy read, you are wrong. For those of you that have been fortunate enough to have visited some of the places Mr. Colwell refers too, as you read these passages you will recognize immediately some of the grandeur, the holiness, the completeness of his words. For those who have not been so fortunate, there is no better elemental guide to metaphysics than this work of Mr. Colwell. You will not read metaphysical terms or definitions…but you will experience the essence of what it means to be in contact with the metaphysical.Oliver Wendell Holmes; the father, the noted poet, conversationalist, and professor of anatomy at Harvard Medical School…not the son, the famous juror and Supreme Court Justice, once wrote, “… one of the many ways of classifying minds is under the heads of arithmetical and algebraical intellects. All economical and practical wisdom is an extension or variation of the following arithmetical formula: 2+2=4. Every philosophical proposition has the more general character of the expression a+b=c. We are mere operatives, empirics, and egotists, until we learn to think in letters instead of figures.” You are no doubt familiar with the thinking of many of the “mere operatives, empirics, and egotists” characterized by the scientists and “new atheists” so popular in our culture today. I invite you to take a moment and listen to a man who thinks along the lines of Thoreau and Emerson, a man who thinks in letters. Canyon Breezes, a relatively small and inexpensive book, so pertinent and alive with the magisterium of non-science, of metaphysics, a book so rich in that which ultimately matters, is now available and a must read for those who are able to open their eyes…for those who dare to expand their horizons and think in terms of letters. Do yourself a favor. Grab a cup of coffee, a copy of Canyon Breezes, and find a quiet, comfortable corner. Read Mr. Colwell’s book slowly, thoughtfully, and… most importantly…listen to what he is really saying.

MCCAY Colwell has the uncanny ability to see well beyond the world at face value. Canyon breezes searches for the meaning of life in the canyon walls, spring monsoons, and the rock formations. A great read for anyone who wants to find the spiritual value in the world around you.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Vivid and engaging By Ray Bard Joe Colwell knows the West — its mountains, valleys, and canyons. He knows the creatures that live there. He has spent his adult life working in and exploring the land west of the Mississippi. More than 45 years with the Forest Service and as a forest fire reporter. In Canyon Breezes he shares his personal journeys and observations in 36 pieces and 158 pages. It’s the kind of book you can read one essay and reflect on his storytelling or you can read several in one sitting. You can sample a random piece to discover a message that speaks to you. And, you may pause, reminded of one of your own experiences. The vivid and engaging writing style will make you appreciate the wonders of the West even more — and inspire you to get outdoors and do your own exploring. It’s an enjoyable and rewarding read.

Three total strangers – an escaped convict, an abused woman running from the men in her past, and a fiercely independent, homeless orphan with a great deal of baggage – agree to travel together as a family for one day to elude authorities. But Christmas Day 1861, finds them huddled together and snowbound in an abandoned shack at the end of the line in the mountains of Western Virginia, instead of a city with lots of room to get lost in the crowd as expected. When they are discovered by a well-meaning neighbor, their temporary “family” instantly becomes a very visible part of a rural Christian community. Can the convict, who wants only his freedom, the lady, who wants nothing to do with men, marriage, or church, and the headstrong orphan who has made it this far without adults ordering her around, manage to behave until spring thaw, in a manner that will convince their neighbors they are truly a family? Will they be recognized as the impostors they are? Or will love make all the difference?

The author's description of the characters and location quickly transported me into the story. A heartwarming story of what a 'real' community should be. I am anxiously awaiting the next book. Definitely a good read.

A historical narrative with a christian undertone, Story of two lost souls who come upon two lost children and how thru the help of neighbors and a empty cabin become a family that recognizes it was God working thru the people in the community that gave them the chance they needed. Both adults had secrets in their past and the community recognizes that the father has a black past but they also realize that he has accepted Christ. Book was hard to put down, and I read it in two settings and am anxiously awaiting her second in the series!

The Deliverance from evil, to Joy is by reasoning rightly. There is a right logic which governs the Universe. For the right logic to be proven right (it must be and) it is proven by all known scientific evidence and by Biblical evidence and by confirmed experiential evidence. THE DELIVERANCE explains simply, proves and applies that right way of thinking to the all major socioeconomic and political issues causing suffering in the world these days. The problems of violence, Islamist terrorism, poverty, high unsustainable wealth imbalances, unsustainable global trade imbalances, sexism, racism, hypocrisy about morality, ignorance of the Whole Truth, global environmental damage, religious conflicts and the political West vs. ISIL in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Nigeria, Yemen vs. Iran; Eastern Ukraine, Russia; N. Korea, China; and the Jewish vs. Palestinian conflicts are addressed to advocate specific correct solutions that are provable. Not understanding what is right clearly and as a result not thinking rightly is the cause of all suffering. Understanding and applying that right logic at the personal level through right actions leads to being without anxiety, without stress, without sadness, without ignorance, without conflict, without suffering and being free, in liberty, sustained happiness and Joy in Peace. "Consider THE DELIVERANCE a Unified Theory of Life that proves the prophesies of the prophets and of Christ Jesus..." D. Donovan, Reviewer, M.B.R.

Zecos begins with the "correct education" or his view of what one must know in order to maintain ones integrity. He follows that with a (brief?) somewhat interesting introduction into elementary physics. I actually felt smarter after reading the second "chapter." And then there were chemistry, biology, psychology... and I started to get muddled. Things didnt really pick up for me again until chapter 12. While I dont actually agree with his take on modern religions (and the conflict between Palestinians and Jews that he said he wouldnt address, but did. Kind of.) I at least found it interesting.Basically, Zecos has written a book that is part college science and part religious philosophy. I strongly suggest reading it in the day or at least when youre not tired, unless you want help falling asleep. Its not that I found this book to be boring (its not), its just molasses-like in its verbal consistency. At the end of the day, I will probably read it again. It was tough to get through, but seemed to be a valuable source of information.

Excerpt from Archaeological Essays, Vol. 1The late Sir James Simpson, in the midst of his anxious professional labours, was wont to seek for refreshment in the pursuit of subjects of a historical and archæological character, and to publish the results in the Transactions of different Societies and in scientific journals. Some of these papers are now scarce, and difficult of access; and a desire having been expressed in various quarters for their appearance in a collected and permanent form, I was consulted on the subject by Sir Walter Simpson, who put into my hands copies of the various essays, with notes on some of them by his father, which seemed to indicate that he himself had contemplated their republication.Having for a long time been acquainted with their merits, I did not hesitate to express a strong opinion in favour of their publication; and I accepted with pleasure the duty of editing them, which Sir Walter requested me to perform.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An okay opening volume By Ryan Sz I've enjoyed the majority of Tim Seeley's work (Revival and Hack/Slash in particular), so I was surprised that this one fell a little flat. I will continue reading the future volumes as there is enough in this first round to keep me interested in coming back. The art is well done and the characters are interesting so that adds to my desire to keep reading, albeit with some hesitance.

Characters are interesting and flawed, and you root for them. This is the first thing I've read from Seeley, but I'll check out his other stuff.
