Pierre and Jean are the sons of Gérôme Roland, a jeweller who has retired to Le Havre, and his wife Louise. Pierre works as a doctor, and Jean is a lawyer. It recounts the story of a middle-class French family whose lives are changed when Léon Maréchal, a deceased family friend, leaves his inheritance to Jean. This provokes Pierre to doubt the fidelity of his mother and the legitimacy of his brother. Pierre discovers that his theories about his brother's illegitimacy are correct when he finds and reads old letters that his mother and Léon Marechal had been sending to each other. This investigation sparks violent reactions in Pierre, whose external appearance vis a vis his mother visibly changes. In his anguish, most notably shown during family meals, he tortures her with allusions to the past that he has now uncovered. Meanwhile, Jean's career and love life improve over the course of the novel while Pierre's life gets significantly worse. Provoked by his brother's accusations of jealousy, Pierre reveals to Jean what he has learned. However, unlike Pierre, Jean offers his mother love and protection. The novel closes with Pierre’s departure on an oceanliner. Thus the novel is organised around the unwelcome appearance of a truth (Jean’s illegitimacy), its suppression for the sake of family continuity and the acquisition of wealth, and the expulsion from the family of the legitimate son.

They've gotten their education, but are just starting their career paths. An event happens, that brings to question the father of one of the boys. The boys have always been jealous of each other, and this event bring some things to a head. The family relationships and country culture, are interesting, as is the development of the characters. Good Story. Well worth reading.

Typhoon is a novella by Joseph Conrad, begun in 1899 and serialized in Pall Mall Magazine in January–March 1902. Many chronicles have been written about life at sea, but few, if any, can compare with Joseph Conrad's masterpiece. It is the story of one unremarkable steamship captain, pitted against a storm of incredible fury. Captain Macwhirr has a reputation as a solid, steadfast man, who "having just enough imagination to carry him through each successive day, and no more" cannot fully believe any storm would be a match for his powerful ship. So, when the barometer and other clues begin to hint at trouble ahead, he is only moderately concerned and unwilling to change course and lose precious time-a decision that may prove more costly than he could ever have imagined.

Review "Conrad is quite simply the master of all who try to reflect the world of the sea in the mirror of the written word....No one has limned more vividly the courage, the skill, the dreams, and terrors of those who set out upon the waters. He is the Captain." -David Poyer, author of The Med.

From the Publisher "If you liked The Perfect Storm, you will be blown away by Typhoon, Conrad's classic tale." -David Hagberg, author of White House

"Conrad is quite simply the master of all who try to reflect the world of the sea in the mirror of the written word...No one has limned more vividly the courage, the skill, the dreams, and terrors of those who set out upon the waters. He is the Captain." --David Poyer, author of The Med

About the Author Polish author Joseph Conrad is considered to be one of the greatest English-language novelists, a remarkable achievement considering English was not his first language. Conrad s literary works often featured a nautical setting, reflecting the influences of his early career in the Merchant Navy, and his depictions of the struggles of the human spirit in a cold, indifferent world are best exemplified in such seminal works as Heart of Darkness, Lord JimM, The Secret Agent, Nostromo, and Typhoon. Regarded as a forerunner of modernist literature, Conrad s writing style and characters have influenced such distinguished writers as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, William S. Burroughs, Hunter S. Thompson, and George Orwell, among many others. Many of Conrad s novels have been adapted for film, most notably Heart of Darkness, which served as the inspiration and foundation for Francis Ford Coppola s 1979 film Apocalypse Now.

32 of 33 people found the following review helpful. "Perfidy, Violence, and Terror" By James Paris It has been over 30 years since the first time I read this book. Coming back to it after all this time, my overwhelming impression was how much Conrad had compressed into so few pages. TYPHOON can easily be read in a single sitting; but don't plan on going to bed right after. Not without a good stiff drink. The Nan-Shan, a steamer of Siamese registry but with English officers, and with a cargo of Chinese coolie laborers returning from a stint overseas, encounters a deadly typhoon and somehow survives it. We see the story unfold through the eyes of Jukes, the first mate, who is awed by his stoic Captain MacWhirr's quiet resolve in the face of a storm of the century. Reading it, I felt transported to the Northridge Earthquake of 1994. A sound as of all the demons of hell -- shaking and rolling in six directions at once -- flashes of light from exploding transformers -- barefooted stumbling for my boots in a world of broken glass and crockery -- found by the police hours later walking down the street, stunned, with blood pouring from my ankle and a gallon jug of water in my hand. Or, replace it with an equivalent experience of your own. Conrad had looked death in the face and learned how to face it. His Captain MacWhirr stands fast in the fury and doesn't let his imagination of untold horrors interfere with guiding the ship through the storm. At one point, he tells Jukes in the wheelhouse, "We must trust her [the ship] to go through it and come out the other side, That's plain and straight." Conrad is a wise teacher and a great writer. TYPHOON did more than survive a second reading: It awed me a second time. If I may quote once more from the book: "MacWhirr had sailed over the surface of the oceans as some men go skimming over the years of existence to sink gently into a placid grave, ignorant of life to the last, without ever having been made to see all that it may contain of perfidy, of violence, and of terror." MacWhirr's initiation into this perfidy, violence, and terror shows us how we might likewise survive the storms and shipwrecks of our own lives. What an incredible book!

It may start a little slow, but Joseph Conrad is just laying groundwork. Before long the reader is experencing very good writing about a very bad voyage. This would make a great man against nature movie.

A 1903 Classic Novel of the Sea By A Customer Great narration on the audio book captures the British and Scottish dialects, but it's so smooth that it's easy to be lulled into dreamland. I had to go back to the excerpts on Amazon and replay parts of the tape to catch the true impact of Conrad's words.Captain Mac Whirr, a short, fat, dull but dependable seaman, commands the Nan-Shan for a Siamese merchant firm. He writes twelve letter a year to his uncaring wife and has two children who barely know him. During typhoon season in the China Sea Jukes the first mate tells the Captain to change course to avoid the looming storm, but Mac Whirr will think of nothing but forging straight ahead. The Captain and Jukes as well as Solomon Rout the chief engineer (Long Sol, Old Sol or father Rout to his shipmates and Solomon Sez to his wife who quotes pearls of wisdom from his letters to anyone who'll listen) and the Bosun are at the center of the crisis that follows.During a storm like no other the actions of everyman are almost predetermined by their biases, intrenched beliefs and in some cases ability to react. In six short chapters Conrad develops a great story of how different men behave in a fight for survival. The tale of the last leg is told in pieces from letters home. The Captain's letter is barely read by his wife who has no idea what happened. Solomon's is sentimental and cherished by his beloved. Jukes reveals the most. Unsurprisingly we find that Captain Mac Whirr wasn't so dumb after all.It would probably be better read than listened to and deserves at least four stars for the classic it is.

My lords, if you would hear a high tale of love and of death, here is that of Tristan and Queen Iseult; how to their full joy, but to their sorrow also, they loved each other, and how at last they died of that love together upon one day; she by him and he by her. Long ago, when Mark was King over Cornwall, Rivalen, King of Lyonesse, heard that Mark’s enemies waged war on him; so he crossed the sea to bring him aid; and so faithfully did he serve him with counsel and sword that Mark gave him his sister Blanchefleur, whom King Rivalen loved most marvellously. He wedded her in Tintagel Minster, but hardly was she wed when the news came to him that his old enemy Duke Morgan had fallen on Lyonesse and was wasting town and field. Then Rivalen manned his ships in haste, and took Blanchefleur with him to his far land; but she was with child. He landed below his castle of Kanoël and gave the Queen in ward to his Marshal Rohalt, and after that set off to wage his war.

39 of 41 people found the following review helpful. The Magic Of True Love By K. Jump "The Romance of Tristan & Iseult" is one of the foremost chivalric myths of all time. A rich mosaic of the human experience, embroidered with colorful gothic elements like spell-weaving dwarves, love potions, magical bells and even a particularly monstrous dragon, "Tristan & Iseult" is the tale of a heroic knight from fabled Lyonesse who falls madly in love with his King's betrothed through sorcery. Neither Tristan nor his Queen-to-be can resist the magic that possesses them both, and they cannot help but fling themselves headlong into an affair that shakes the very foundations of the Arthurian world.More than a mere "love story," this is a philosophical exploration of the human soul. Are Tristan and Iseult really guilty of adultery? Do they have a free will? Do they truly love each other, or is their affair nothing but a sorcerous delusion? Is King Mark the villain of the story, or is this a tale beyond conventional heroism or villainy?Readers familiar with the Arthurian legend will quickly draw parallels between Tristan and Iseult and Lancelot and Guinevere, whose tragic love brought Camelot to its knees. Indeed, Malory cites Tristan (whom he refers to as "Tristram") as a knight of such prowess and nobility that he is second only to Lancelot himself--and a close second at that.If you are a dreamer, a hopeless romantic, this is the book you've been looking for.

Throughout my degree, and my previous highschool education, I've come across "Tristan and Iseult" in four different forms before Bedier's, and was so tired of the tale that I thought no one would breathe life into it again for me.Not so.Bedier's translation (which was then translated by Hilaire Belloc and completed by Paul Rosenfeld) has repainted "Tristan and Iseult" into a truly living piece of mythology. Presented with exquisite detail, and with portions of the story even my four previous readings had never uncovered, this is, I believe, how the tale was meant to be told. The achetypal doomed-romance, "Tristan and Iseult" is the well-known tale of the romance between those two lovers, born of a magical philtre, and doomed in the face of Iseult's marriage to King Mark. The age of chivalry practically shines from the pages, and the heart-wrenching story itself is a joy to read, with only a few bumps and jolts of prose along the way (likely, I imagine, translation difficulties). If you are at all interested in mythology, especially that of Arthurian theme or times, Bedier's translation of "Tristan and Iseult" is the one for you. You won't be disappointed.

Mercer "The Romance of Tristan & Iseult" is the tale of one of the earliest pairs of star-crossed lovers in literature, heavily researched and drawing from many versions of the story. Having come across the tale in many forms, from the opera "Tristan und Isolde" to cameo appearances in "The Mists of Avalon," this telling is refreshing and spirited. The authenticity of language, as well as the narrator's own action and moral interpretations make one feel that they are sitting near a fire in the great hall listening to a seneschal tell the tale of doomed love."Tristan & Iseult" is fast-paced and beautiful. It is also an invaluable tale to read as an example of the archetypes and symbols of the tragic hero, imbedded Christ imagery, woman on a pedestal, etc.

I learned lots about his experience with bees and about his insights that many do not contemplate upon in this rushed culture of ours. He is a great individual who has contributed tremendously toward our progressive understanding of the honeybee.

In addition, it has very relevant information about beekeeping that is still being taught today. Obviously, the hive research that Langstroth did was superb. Modern beekeepers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Secret Six Vol.2 is just as great as Vol.1 By thedean Continuing off volume one is this, and it's just as great as its predecessor. Like the previous volume, it's split between two main story arcs, with a bit of filler in the middle (tying into the "Battle of the Cowl" storyline of Batman, I believe). The characters are still great, whichever ones are still left in the story that is, with the addition of Bane fitting in naturally, even when he's sympathetically portrayed. The new character, Jeannette/Banshee, is also a great fit as well. Catman is a bit less in focus compared to the previous volume, but still plays a major role and everyone is given appropriate time to further develop their interesting yet severely flawed characters. Gail Simone really knows how to write them well, and the art by Nicola Scott is just excellent. The first arc deals with a case that the Six are hired for: to retrieve an incarcerated woman and something she has in her possession. However, a notorious criminal overlord is also interested in her item as well, and spares no expense in hiring other villains to take down the team. Given that our "heroes" were(/still are) villains themselves, once they learn what they are really transporting it's entertaining to see pretty-much all of them contemplate betrayal. What really makes this arc memorable is this new villain, nicknamed Junior, who is clearly established to be ruthless and cruel, and the review of Junior's identity and true face is rather unsettling to both them and to the reader, given the bodily horror we see. It's full of memorable moments, such Catman's rather lengthy battle with Batman (both physically and verbally), but also has its comedic moments such as parts of their stay in Vegas and the double date half the team goes on.The second arc focuses one another job of theirs: To help run this prison colony. They do what they're hired to do, but each one has objections to this and that on the prison isle. It does a great job developing the newer additions to the team (Bane and Banshee), showing their insecurities and their issues as a bit more focus is placed on them. The #$%^ really hits the fan when Wonder Woman shows up, though, not understanding the Six's role there. It's just great fun watching everything descend into pandemonium. My only complaints are that there are some key story elements missing, which I understand happened in non-Secret Six titles from a little research. Which can't be helped, and Gail Simone does a decent job of filling us in here and there but it was VERY confusing to not be given an exact story as to Knockout's death. Coming off of Vol.1, I had no idea what happened exactly, and was only given minimal detail. It's very important to understand Scandal's character, and to establish a new love interest for her. In addition, I was rather clueless as to why Bane was on the team since he didn't join in the previous volume either and was just magically there from my point of view. He's written into it nicely, but it's rather jarring at first since this is also a bit unlike his previous persona. I won't fault it too much for that, and the only issue I do have with Simone's writing is that she introduces and places Banshee on the team but doesn't really explain how she can so easily trade in her previous life running the hotel for rounding out the Six. It's a minor complaint overall, but one worth mentioning since it did stick out to me while reading.

It's not about heroes as myth or generally saving reality, okay, maybe a little, but this book is luke an adult version of a comic for your inner six year old. This volume collects the first two arcs and trades (and boy howdy, volume 2 Depths was ridiculously hard to find in trade format until this, prolly due to Wonder Woman being drawn like incredibly well) of the ongoing until canceled Secret Six, spinning off a couple minis and some shot. There is violence and horror in this book, and lots of that thing called The Human Condition, but at its heart, Six is about a team of misfit and outcast loser villains who bond as a highly dysfunctional but fun family. The on y bad thing about the whole series is it ending for Geoff Johns' and DC's short lived New 52, and when the Six came back, it's still fun but unfortunately it's not in this reality, but several of our rebooted villains are back together. Hopefully Deadshot will join sooner than later.

This volume deals with how Scandal deal with the loss of her lover. Bane joins the group as is protector to Scandal. Kind of cool. The group has to deal with a few dangerous jobs and have to see if they can survive and get along with each other. Ragdoll has to deal with someone from his past, Catman goes head to head with Batman and the group tries to make peace with why they are not respected. Nightwing makes a cameo and the group even has to deal with wonder Woman. The book is very violent and very funny as well. Good mix. A

Translated for Amazon who rejected my review based on relevancy [kan jy nou meer!]Years ago, when my grandma was done reading a book she enjoyed, she used to say: Nou toe nou. Meaning "There you have it."I find myself doing the same after reading these two books.I am not going to rehash the story, or give you another summery, as I think the Author did a good job with that herself.Instead, I am going to give you my personal impression.I struggled to get into the books, as the story stands with one foot in the past, one in the present and an eye on the future. Soon enough, like a good hostess should, the Author presents the characters in such a way, you become comfortable and enjoy their company. Both stories were wrapped in historical events, while you are constantly reminded of the current day world.I loved the balance in the usage of our language, where Flamingcrystal managed to bring the everyday use of our language to life with beautiful, expressive prose.I also found it refreshing that these books are the clean versions of the writing, but it does not loose the passion and sensuality needed in a romance. You will hate the bad guys, love the good guys - all the while being guided through a maze of fascinating plot twists. Just when you think you have it figured out, Flamingcrystal turns you around and sends you in a brand new direction. All in all, get the book, read it and see for yourself.xxxAdri

Filled with deeply nuanced storytelling and vividly drawn, often heartbreaking human characters, Snow in Amman: An Anthology of Short Stories From Jordan is a rich selection of contemporary Jordanian fiction which stands in stark contrast to many of the prevailing stereotypes of Arabic culture. Outside the archaeological lens, very little is known about life in Jordan, particularly in the English-speaking world. Such lack makes it more susceptible to falling into the soup of widespread generalizations about the Middle East. The 11 stories in Snow in Amman, published in their original Arabic in Jordan and appearing in this book for the first time in English, depict a wide array of social and feminist issues through a lens at once familiar and surprising, commonplace and yet intensely different.

Some New Directions in Writing By George Doucette (this is Georges' wife Ron) This is a collection of short stories from current Jordanian authors, each is very different from the next. One commonality I noticed was an almost brusque view of modern emotional conflicts, somewhat reminiscent of Ernest Hemingway's short stories. There is a flavor, sometimes slight, occasionally very pronounced, of a different culture, a 'foreignness' that I found intriguing, that kept me thinking about certain stories long after I had put down the book. I would recommend it more strongly to my woman friends, but anyone who is interested in modern writing trends would enjoy it.

What the west sees, hears, and thinks is in start contrast to the truth shown in these beautiful stories. They're people, like you and me - and they go through the same types of struggles. Gorgeously rendered - highly recommended.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. anti-Judaic fiction By R. E. HAYES Popular pot-boiler anti-Judaic Christian apologetics. Author was Irish Anglican clergyman who believed the Endtime was near. Salathiel is a biblical name (google) fictionally given here to the mythical figure Wandering Jew (google), a popular legend in many versions for 1500 years. Salathiel is an aristocratic Jew who insulted Jesus, according to legend, and was condemned to live on earth until Jesus' Second Coming. S. understands that the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD, during which he has many improbable heroic adventures, is God's punishment of the Jews for their sins, especially the death of Jesus. Good example of 2000 years of Christian demonization of Jews, culminating in the Holocaust. Novel ends after destruction of Jerusalem, with S. suggesting he may write further memoirs. The 1901 edition includes helpful annotatons and essays on the Second Coming.

Coronarie, colesterolo, elettrocardiogramma, stent: cosa indicano questi termini?

Twenty-two years before Technology of the Gods... Seventeen years before Fingerprints of the Gods... Fifteen years before Forbidden Archaeology... There was... Worlds Before Our Own, Brad Steiger's groundbreaking argument for the existence of a global prehistoric civilization.

The evidence Steiger had amassed for such a claim was based primarily upon finds of "erratics" mysterious "man-made" artifacts found in the deepest, most primordial geological strata.

When Worlds Before Our Own was first published, it was met with scathing reviews--even demands that the book be taken from the shelves and burned. Steiger's desire to determine humankind's true origins has always been one of his greatest areas of interest, and he was shocked that both the scientific and religious establishments had reacted so negatively to the theories put forward in the book. Hostile reviewers fumed that Steiger had no right to reveal archaeological discoveries that could threaten the traditional timetables of human evolution.

Eventually critics began to hail the book as "mostly brilliant" and "daring," and in the past couple of decades the concepts first presented in Worlds Before Our Own have garnered tremendous critical and popular support. This is the book that started it all.

Brad Steiger's first explorations of the strange and unexplained appeared in 1956. He is the author/coauthor of 164 books in the paranormal, UFO, and prehistoric mystery fields, including such titles as Mysteries of Time and Space, Project Blue Book, Revelation: The Divine Fire, Conspiracies and Secret Societies,  Strange Guests, and Shadow World.

Review "... a very thought-provoking book written by one of the best qualified investigative writers to tackle ... historical controversies..." -- Brent Raynes, Alternate Perceptions"...I gleefully relish books like Worlds Before Our Own. These anomalous findings - and there are thousands of them - stand out as real evidence that there very well may have been civilizations (possibly advanced) that pre-date any we are aware of." -- "Evidence for a New History," Stephen Wagner, About.com

About the Author BRAD AND SHERRY STEIGER have written 44 books together dealing with the inspirational, the miraculous, and the mysterious. These include "Christmas Miracles" (winner of the 2002 Storytelling Award from Storytelling World magazine) and "Dog" "Miracles". Fourteen of their titles explore the wonder of animals and the incredible bond that they share with humans. The Steigers have appeared on "Hard Copy", "Inside Edition", and "Entertainment Tonight;" in specials on HBO, Discovery, History, and A&E; and were featured in twenty-two episodes of the syndicated series, "Could It Be a Miracle?"

92 of 93 people found the following review helpful. A Seminal Work Republished By D. Allen Reading through this book, it's hard to believe that it was first published nearly 30 years ago. The information contained within is very intriguing, and written in a form that has seem to be lost in the last two decades, a form which has made Brad a master in the field of research of the unknown...straight forward research journalism. Contained within are arguments which platform thesis of which have gained scaling reviews from academic science...proof that takes both creation and darwinism back to square one... that humans and advanced societies have been around far longer than any textbooks have supposed."THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR BURNING"This is the phrase that open the forward, and has been pertinent with the treatment of this book by contemporary academia. At the time of it's original publication, it was one of two books that gave this topic a "serious" platform, the other being "Chariots of the Gods". The difference between this book and the works by Erich von Danikan is that von Danikan provided sloppy research and laughable conclusions that could be easily refuted by any layman. Brad's research, however is rock solid, and backed up by serious scientists. In a world where academia fights for grants, scientific prestige, and an unwillingness to change the information contained within textbooks, when unable to refute the evidence put forth within this book, all that "academia" could revert to was smear techniques, or outright denial that this book ever existed. Down through the ages, when any work has become so revolutionary as to outright disprove all that "science" has held as solid reality, the result has always been a call to ban or burn such a text (and let's be thankful it's not the middle ages, where such an author would have been burned at the stake as a heretic as well).Contained within you will find evidence that humanity and advanced societies have not been around for merely 40,000 years, but perhaps millions. Evidence has been put forth that humans may have shared the earth with dinosaurs, giants and monstrous beings written in lore and the bible have a basis in reality, there is more than a good possibility that ancient societies knew about flight and may have produced flying machines, produced batteries and artificial light sources beyond torches, and we have had metal working techniques predating Greek and Roman civilizations. All are presented with scientific backing, and no theories of help from "little green men".If you've ever proposed that civilization is far older than what the mainstream scientists have decreed, this is a must read. All evidence within is presented in a manor very difficult to refute, much of it provided with mainstream scientific data, such as geological strata. This book will cause you to question everything you learned in school.

Presented in a clear and lucid style, Mr. Steiger presents information concerning anomalous archeological finds without the hyperbole usually associated with this type of material.A great deal of information is provided in a compact format. The book is only a total of 224 pages long and is a reprint by Anomalist Books of the book, which was originally published over 30 years ago. It would be nice to have an update of the information provided - has any new information turned up or has anyone done first hand research of any of the sites mentioned? For example, early in the book the author mentions that concrete blocks, as well as a wall of these blocks, were found in a seam of coal in Oklahoma in 1928. Due to a tunnel collapse, this section of the mine was immediately closed thereafter. It would be interesting to follow-up on this report by first hand reporting of the site in question.Overall, the book is worth the money and provides a very nice overview of this topic.

Anomalous Civilizations and Technology By Sylver Wyrd This book is an excellent overview of cryptozoology, ancient egypt, scientific conspiracy, ancient civilizations, anomalous technology, anomalous artifacts, ancient skeletons of giants and little people, human remnants alongside of dinosaur remnants, and a general overview of civilizations that have flourished before ours.

Aprendes cosas nuevas. La recomiendo.
