The essays give different viewpoints on who she was and some of the things she said. It is difficult to believe that she was uneducated and did not know how to read or write until 3 years before her death.

It was spring at Bellecour—the spring of 1789, a short three months before the fall of the Bastille came to give the nobles pause, and make them realise that these new philosophies, which so long they have derided, were by no means the idle vapours they had deemed them. By the brook, plashing its glittering course through the park of Bellecour, wandered La Boulaye, his long, lean, figure clad with a sombreness that was out of harmony in that sunlit, vernal landscape. But the sad-hued coat belied that morning a heart that sang within his breast as joyously as any linnet of the woods through which he strayed. That he was garbed in black was but the outward indication of his clerkly office, for he was secretary to the most noble the Marquis de Fresnoy de Bellecour, and so clothed in the livery of the ink by which he lived. His face was pale and lean and thoughtful, but within his great, intelligent eyes there shone a light of new-born happiness. Under his arm he carried a volume of the new philosophies which Rousseau had lately given to the world, and which was contributing so vastly to the mighty change that was impending. But within his soul there dwelt in that hour no such musty subject as the metaphysical dreams of old Rousseau. His mood inclined little to the "Discourses upon the Origin of Inequality" which his elbow hugged to his side.

The Trampling of the Lilies, by Rafael Sabatini

About the Author Rafael Sabatini (1875 - 1950) was an Italian/British writer of novels of romance and adventure. Sabatini was a prolific writer; he produced a new book approximately every year. He consciously chose to write in his adopted language, because, he said, "all the best stories are written in English." In all, he produced thirty one novels, eight short story collections, six nonfiction books, numerous uncollected short stories, and a play. He is best known for his world-wide bestsellers: The Sea Hawk (1915), Scaramouche (1921), Captain Blood (1922) and Bellarion the Fortunate (1926). Other famous works by Sabatini are The Lion's Skin (1911), The Strolling Saint (1913) and The Snare (1917).

It's his first in the setting he handled best, revolutionary France. The style is mostly vintage Sabatini, though the plot is somewhat weak by his later standards; the ending works both intellectually and emotionally, though the mature Sabatini would have come up with something more satisfying. The plot, as usual, is assisted by coincidences and characters acting in the one way they would obviously avoid; but it avoids the unacceptable holes of most of his earlier novels.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A rose by any other name.... By Karen Amrhein Sabatini was dismissive of his earlier novels, but I enjoy some of them even more than a couple of his late works. "The Trampling of the Lilies" is one of those early gems. Yes, it lacks the historical detail of his later writing, but it more than makes up for that with a compelling story and an engaging, nail-biting romance between two who are very much from different sides of the tracks. Set during the French Revolution, "The Trampling of the Lilies" features an exceptionally non-aristocratic hero, a heroine with much to learn, and some really loathsome villains. If you want a page-turner written with elegance and filled with action, intrigue, and romance, look no further.

I loved this book from first to last. Rafael Sabatini has an exquisite writing style. And in the 3 books I have read of his so far, he always has me laughing with wondrous amusement at the great lengths of foolishness the main male character will go to for the "love of his life". The men are not foolish throughout the book, usually only once, maybe twice, but it is amusing and has me hopeful that real men of honor everywhere go to great lengths for the woman they love. If I could change one thing about Sabitini's books, it is that they not end so abruptly. They are not bad endings, but they end before I wish them to.

Drama in the sky By Victor Flores This story is very involving and very dramatic, I enjoyed the bravery of the main character, fighting in disadventage with the nature and trying to make the impossible come true. It's a very emotional story from the beginnings of the aviation and the dangers of a night flight in these early years of the plane

By Kris Anderson - The Avid Reader Threads of Love by Judith McCoy Miller is a historical, romance novel. Delphina Elizabeth Hughes lost her mother six months ago and now her father is sending her away. Her father has wanderlust and wishes to go explore (which means he wants to look for gold). He placed a newspaper advertisement (unbeknownst to Delphina) to find a position or home for her. Jonathan Wilshire has answered the ad. Jonathan believes Delphina is the answer to his prayers. Jonathan recently lost his brother and sister-in-law, and he was left with five children (Tessie, Josh, Joey, Nathan, and Nettie) and Sarah’s mother, Granny in his care. Delphina does not wish to leave her home or Cherryvale, but she is not given a choice (aren’t you glad that the world has changed). Delphina is off to Kansas to live with the Wilshire family. Delphina is sure God has a plan for her. Delphina settles into life in Council Grove, Kansas with the Wilshire’s. Just when she finds happiness, her father contacts her. He is dying and wants her to come to him. Delphina has choices to make. Will she make the right ones?Threads of Love is well-written and an interesting story. However, it is predictable (you know how it will end). There is some humor in the book which I enjoyed. I liked the Christian values portrayed in the novel (it is a shame that more people do not have the same faith and values). The book also contains bonus content entitled Woven Threads. I give Threads of Love 4 out of 5 stars. I look forward to reading the next book by Judith McCoy Miller.I received a complimentary copy of Threads of Love from NetGalley (and the publisher) in exchange for an honest review.

By Karen R Two sweet stories set in late 1800's Kansas, interconnected by a family thread, and a special quilt sewn with love.Delphinia's life takes a rough turn when her father arranges for her to be sent to Kansas for work not long after her mother dies. She has quite a lot to learn as she takes on the job of caring for five orphaned children and their elderly grandmother. It helps that the children's uncle is longsuffering and has a good sense of humor! Her transformation from an angry teenager to a mature young lady comes more from the spiritual lessons she learns along the way, especially when she learns to forgive and extend grace to others.Tessie's story starts about 15 years later as she begins her career as a physician in a bustling railroad town in Kansas. Back in her home state after years of medical school in Chicago, she is eager to start her practice, making the most of every opportunity to help others, including a little deaf girl she meets on the train. Many challenges come her way, but she handles them well using not only her medical knowledge, but a lot of faith, hope and love. These were enjoyable quick reads, laced with some good examples of spiritual truths. Readers who like Christian historical romances, from young adult and up, will probably enjoy these. (Previously published in the book titled Kansas.)(Book provided by NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.)

Guinn Delphinia's father made an arrangement where a man is allowed to purchase her services as a housekeeper and cook so that he could go to the gold fields. The man, Jonathan Wilshire, gets on Delphinia's last nerve by refusing to call her Delphinia, but only calling her Phiney. He has hired her to take care of his brother's five children--Tessie, Josh, Jacob (?), Nettie and Nate--the twins, and to cook and clean the cabins where they all live. His brother's mother-in-law is taking care of the children while Jonathan brings Phiney home and is a steadfast companion to Phiney, especially in overcoming Tessie's resistance to Phiney's presence. It takes an act of supreme bravery for Tessie to come around, but the change is complete and the two are forever friends. One of the things that brings Tessie around is the quilt that Phiney puts on her bed, a quilt made with her mother that holds all the memories Phiney has of her. Tessie has part of a quilt her mother started and allows Phiney to help her finish it.While a lot of Threads of Love revolves around Phiney and the children, there is a significant portion that includes the relationship growing and budding between Phiney and Jonathan. When Phiney's father asks for her presence in Denver, Jon tells Phiney that he will be asking for her hand in marriage when she comes back.As a bonus, the story Woven Threads is included in the review copy I received. Tessie has grown up, gone to college, and become a doctor when she applies for a job with the Santa Fe railroad. She is stationed in Florence, Kansas, and the man who has hired her, Charlie Bannion takes every opportunity to be in Florence and to see Tessie. While Tessie is on the train to Florence, she meets two sisters--Lydia and Addie (who is deaf), and her heart wants to reach out to both of them. Lydia has come to Florence to be a Harvey Girl, but has no one to take care of Addie. Charlie gets Addie a job in the Harvey House as a dishwasher while Lydia works waiting tables. Lydia is a bitter girl who can't see beyond the end of her nose. When she gets herself pregnant, she dumps Addie on Tessie and leaves with her boyfriend. The road to true love is a rather bumpy one for Tessie and Charlie, especially when an Englishman breaks his leg and becomes Tessie's patient. She visits him daily and while he's rather forward with her, she becomes a bit star-struck in his presence. All of this adds to a long, hard row to hoe for love to find its home with Tessie and Charlie.Judith McCoy Miller is a seasoned author, one whose books I thoroughly enjoy. Her characters have depth and substance, her settings are utilized well within the story she writes, and her plots are incredible.Five Stars, Two Thumbs Up, and a quilt of love to keep you warm.My thanks to Barbour Books for allowing me to read and review this book.

Barbara Gordon Emerges From a Time of Testing with Her Idealism and Heroism Intact - Great Stuff By MereChristian Batgirl, Vol. 5: Deadline was a good work that suffered slightly from the problems that collected volumes around the time of crossovers can often suffer from. Namely, parts of the overall story are given that have no resolution unless you read the other "Batfamily" titles in one case, or other titles from the larger DC Univserse in another case.Be that as it may, the "heart" of the story was the way that Barbara/Batgirl continues to grow and persevere through personal tragedy to become a better person. The perennial problem for someone who sees darkness and evil up close a lot is to become cold and distant. And eventually self-righteous and untrusting, pushing others away.Barbara falls victim to this, and only by facing these issues head-on does she become a better person and thus a better hero. How does one persevere in the face of betrayal, anger, loss, so on? Barbara must decide or the darkness inside will consume her.One part of the story made me think of the line in the Rurouni Kenshin manga/anime. Kenshin admits to the bad guy of the first story that he is right and the herione Kaoru wrong in the philosophy of swords. They are designed to kill and no nice idealism (that Kaoru and her father before her) espouse can change this fact. But then he smiles kindly at a devastated Kaoru and states that he likes her fantasy better and dreams of the day the real world is like her fantasy. This is something Babs must face too. When her instincts and harsh judgments of human nature are proven correct, she eventually decides that she doesn't want them to be so, and that a friend's idealism is better. Ultimately, both Babs' instincts and the idealism she seeks out are true. The balance is hard, but it must be maintained for someone to be a truly good person and hero. That is the lesson we all can take, in a way, from this story. Our instincts are often correct, but oh, to see a day when our idealism is true. I believe that day is when Christ returns, but in the meantime, I can try to make it as true as possible.Don't lose your idealism. That's something for us all in the real world to remember. In the final confrontation (for now) with super-villainess Knightfall, Babs manages to strike this delicate balance, and by so doing, even impresses and partially redeems her adversary enough to convince Knightfall to give her a precious gift by way of a truth that Babs needs to hear. Really, while Babs always (since her debut as Batgirl again in the New 52) has managed to be good despite the darkness, this was a unique challenge this time around. She was presented with a crucible, and she emerged triumphant in the end.The series I understand was restarted with a lighter tone, signifying Babs' change in outlook. I can't wait to start it.

La isla del tesoro es una novela de aventuras escrita por el escocés Robert Louis Stevenson, publicada en libro en Londres en 1883 (publicada originalmente por entregas en la revista infantil Young Folks, entre 1881 y 1882 con el título de The Sea Cook, or Treasure Island).

La Isla Del Tesoro (Spanish Edition), by Robert L Stevenson

About the Author Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 - 1894) fue un novelista, poeta y ensayista escocés.

Our missionary myths are false. Tales of breathtaking adventures, harrowing expeditions, and close encounters of the bug kind - these are the stories we expect to hear from missionaries. Like a Hollywood blockbuster, we want action, tension, and a happily-ever-after ending, complete with smiling children and the sense that we’ve contributed to the betterment of humanity. But what if missionary life is not like that? Beyond the newsletter blurbs and well-crafted blog posts lies a missionary world that few outsiders ever see. MISSIONS UNMASKED peels off the facade shrouding the realities of that world. Adam Mosley offers an inside look into the life of a missionary, and an exploration of the challenges and issues facing global missionaries and those who care for them. It’s time to move beyond the myth, embrace the humanity of the missionary, understand the brokenness of their situation, and tap into the restorative power of authentic relationships. To become better partners, we must begin by removing the mask and seeing clearly, perhaps for the first time, the real life of a missionary.

By curvynovelsdotinfo Heroine: pleasingly plump/voluptuous Textile artist Dodie Layton is under orders from her mother to drop 2 dress sizes in six weeks, or risk losing the chance of being Maid of Honor at her sister's celebrity-studded wedding. Desperate for a workable weight-loss scheme, Dodie will do anything to metamorphose from a dumpy dowd into a voluptuous vixen. Even if it means living on nothing but her mother's cabbage soup, she'll do whatever it takes for her philandering ex to see her looking devastatingly gorgeous on the arm of sexy actor and best man Charles Grey in the celebrity magazine photos of the wedding. Realizing she can't pull this miracle off on her own, Dodie makes a panic-stricken call to her best friend Gina, a gym manager, and begs her to whip her into shape. The two cut a deal: artwork for the spa's reception area in exchange for a healthier body in a hurry. Pro-rugby-player-turned CEO Brad Morgan is always hungry for a challenge, whether it's developing a new sports and leisure center or just pushing his injured body to maintain its professional level of fitness. Deciding to check up on his latest and most expensive project, Lake Spa, he's prepared to finally take a well-deserved working vacation. But while there, Brad crosses paths with a frumpy artist-type who has a rush need for a personal trainer. When the health club worker assigned to her falls ill, he jumps at the chance to take on the job. Brad is supposed to be whittling Dodie down in time for the big day, but he finds he likes her generous curves, her softness. He's drawn to them, to her dimpled smile, and her deep dark eyes. Theirs is supposed to be a short-term business relationship, yet he wants so much more. How can Brad make Dodie believe that he wants her as she is, when she doesn't even know the truth about who he is? What worked for me: I really appreciated the quiet humor throughout the story, and found that Dodie and Brad were very likeable people with a terrific chemistry between them. I hated to leave them at the end of the book. Size-wise Dodie was a bit plump and thought she needed to lose some weight, but all she truly needed was to bolster her self-esteem and gain some self-respect. (In the end, she toned up some, but she didn't drop the dress sizes like she'd originally planned.)What didn't work for me: We didn't see much of them, but the mum and the ex-boyfriend were easy to hate. I know it's a petty wish on my part, but I would have loved to have had more time dedicated to Dodie's newfound happiness being rubbed in their faces!Overall: This charming, well-written story was as delicious as the chocolate Dodie craved! Anyone who delights in contemporary romances with a British flavor should enjoy this one.If you liked "The Bridesmaid's Reward" you might also enjoy "The Course of True Love", "Born to be Wild", "More to Love", "Runaway Bay", "Blushing Pink", "His Seductive Revenge", "Carried Away", "His E-mail Order Wife", "Dear Cupid", "Plum Girl", "Spellbound", "It Had to be You", or "This Heart of Mine".

She's been cast in the role of chief bridesmaid for her sister's celebrity wedding of the century at Melchester Castle, and she needs to lose two dress sizes before the big day. With less than six weeks to do it, Dodie runs to her best friend, a personal trainer. But when Gina has to be in LA and the substitute has a sudden attack of appendicitis, what's Dodie to do?Enter Brad Morgan, ex-rugby player, multi-millionaire owner of the spa where Gina works, and obviously part time psychologist.During the time he and Dodie are together, he fails to share his ownership of the spa, and forces her to listen to herself and to her heart. He digs into the reasons she uses chocolate as her "designated comfort food" and shows her the REAL Dodie is more special than any actress in the world.Brad also learns by teaching Dodie that his own heart, which has been locked in a self-made freezer, is melting as he falls head over heels for The Bridesmaid's Reward.Compassionate characterizations live in Ms. Fielding's books, this is one you really are obliged to read before that big wedding. Buy it now!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. FABULOUS BOOK! By DaleDK I've loved Liz Fielding's writing for a while now, and each one gets better than the last. The early banter-dialogue between hero and heroine (who's a real pip!) is superb. I never knew there were so many wonderful ways to describe a man's smile.I dare say this is a story without a conflict and I LOVED it--perhaps BECAUSE it didn't have something trite or misunderstood or some past hurt standing in their way of falling for each other. And with such a well-written, satisfying ending. It's a simple yet unique tale of a growing love between two great people and isn't that what romance is all about? Don't even stop writing, Liz!

In some places, underlining from the copied volume is visible. It is a valuable and interesting book, but it should be read alongside more modern Melanchthon literature.Don't be fooled by the 2006 publication date! This is an 1815 book!

A Mistress for Major Bartlett (Brides of Waterloo), by Annie Burrows

About the Author Annie Burrows love of stories meant that when she was old enough to go to university, she chose English literature. She wasn’t sure what she wanted to do beyond that, but one day, she began to wonder if all those daydreams that kept her mind occupied whilst carrying out mundane chores, would provide similar pleasure to other women. She was right… and Annie hasn’t looked back since.Readers can sign up to Annie's newsletter at www.annie-burrows.co.uk

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Sunday, 18th June—1815Limber up, fast as you can!' Colonel Randall rode up to Major Bartlett and pointed to a spot to the rear. 'We are heading to the ridge up yonder. You will recall we came in that way yesterday, past a place—what was it called?—Hougoumont. The French are massing their heavy cavalry between the château and the Charleroi road. Take up your position between the two infantry squares up there. And be quick about it! 'Major Bartlett kept his face impassive as he saluted. Quick? That was going to be a relative term given the sodden state of the ground.'Right, lads,' he said, turning to his men. 'You heard the Colonel. At the double!'The speed at which they turned the gun carriages and started ploughing their way across the field had much more to do with the shells exploding all around them, spraying them with mud, than willingness to obey their commanding officer. The sooner they got to higher ground, the sooner they could start inflicting some damage on the Frenchmen currently trying to blow them to kingdom come. Not that Major Bartlett had any complaints. He had a rather elastic attitude to obeying orders himself. In any other unit his tendency to interpret orders to suit himself would have got him up on a charge—indeed, had done so on several occasions. Only Colonel Randall had appreciated that his ability to think on his feet, rather than dumbly obeying orders, could be an advantage, taking him into his unit and giving him promotion.Still, when he glanced across the ridge, and saw that his team had beaten Major Flint's to reach their designated position, he felt a twinge of pride in his men. They'd worked with a swiftness and efficiency he'd drilled into them, even if, at this moment, they'd worked the way they had because their hides depended on it.Flint's guns were ready to fire mere seconds after his own. Even Rawlins, who'd only been promoted a matter of days before, had his guns in position not long after. And just as well. The French cavalry were approaching at the trot. The first salvo his men fired mowed down the leaders. But they kept coming. Big bastards. On big horses.'Dear lord, they'll charge right over us!'Major Bartlett whirled round. Had one of his own men dared say that?'Not Randall's Rogues, they won't,' he snarled. 'Remember our motto—always victorious!' By any means. Particularly when sent behind enemy lines, where his, and his men's, talents for causing mayhem had so often been given free rein.'Aye,' roared Randall, drawing his sword and holding it aloft. 'Semper Laurifer! Ready, Rogues… Fire!'The guns roared again. Horses and men fell. Smoke swirled round the scene, blotting out the sight of the dead and dying, though Bartlett could still hear their screams and groans. And then he heard cheering. From the infantry squares behind him. The cavalry charge was over. This one, anyway. He cast a quick, appraising glance over his men. All of them steadily reloading, preparing for the next attack, not wasting their time cheering, or capering about and having to be pushed back into position. At this point, between cavalry charges, their orders had been to retreat into the infantry squares for cover. But his men, seasoned veterans, knew as well as he did that if they didn't stay right where they were, the squares would break and scatter. They'd seen it happen elsewhere already today. The infantry—with little or no experience—were watching the way the Rogues calmly went about their business as though those huge French horses were no more than skittles to knock down. Their staunch disregard of danger was probably the only thing giving them any hope.Hope—hah! It was the one thing neither he, nor his men, had felt for a very long time. They were the damned. Doomed to death, one way or another. They just preferred to take as many of the murdering French to hell with them as they could. At least they could die like men, if they did so in defence of their country, instead of dancing on the end of a rope.'Here they come again, lads,' he heard Randall shout. And then came the thunder of hooves. The roar of the guns. The smoke, and the screams, and the mud, and the carnage. And his men reloaded and fired. And loaded and fired. And still there was no end to the French. The next morningLady Sarah Latymor rubbed her eyes and peered up at the manger above her head. Could she really make out wisps of straw sticking through the grating, or was it just wishful thinking? In the stall next to hers, she could hear Castor shuffling about, lipping at whatever provender Pieter had placed in his own manger. She reached out her hand and laid the palm against the partition. Being able to hear her horse, Gideon's last gift to her, moving about in his stall during the night, had been all that had kept her flayed nerves from giving way altogether. But it looked as though the worst day of her life was over now. She could, at last, make out the pale rectangle of her hand against the planking. Dawn was definitely breaking. And Brussels was quiet. Though Madame le Brun had warned her that French troops might overrun the city during the night, they'd never come. Which meant the Allies must have won. She could come out of hiding. And continue her quest. To find out what had really happened to Gideon. He couldn't be dead. He was her twin. If his soul had really departed this earth, she would feel it, wouldn't she? Her stomach twisted and dropped, just as it had when her brother-in-law Lord Blanchards had broken the news. While her sister Gussie had broken down and wept, Sarah had stood there, shaking her head. Grown more and more angry at the way they both just accepted it.Blanchards had brushed aside her refusal to believe that the hastily scrawled note he held in his hand could possibly be delivering news of that magnitude. He'd practically ordered her to her room, where he no doubt expected her to weep decorously, out of sight, so that he could concentrate on comforting and supporting his wife.Well, she hadn't wept. She'd been too angry to weep. That anger had simmered all night and driven her, on Sunday morning, all the way to Brussels, the only place where she was likely to be able to find out what had really happened to Gideon. Had driven her about half a mile along the road to the Forest of Soignes before she'd been beaten back by a troop of Hussars, claiming the French had won the battle, and were right on their heels.Hussars, she snorted, sitting up and pushing a hank of hair off her face. What did they know?As if in agreement, Ben, the dog she'd teamed up with in the wake of the Hussars' cowardly scramble to safety, sat up, stretched and yawned.'Did you have a lovely sleep, Ben?' she asked as the dog came to swipe his tongue over her face in morning greeting. 'Yes, you did. You marvellous, fierce creature,' she added, ruffling his ears. 'I could feel you lying at my feet all night long and knew that if any Frenchman dared to set one toe inside this stable, you'd bite him with those great big teeth of yours.' She'd felt safer with him to guard her than she would have done had she had a loaded pistol in her hand.'Woof,' Ben agreed, settling back to give his ear a vigorous scratch with one hind paw.'Well, I may not have had a wink of sleep,' she informed him as she flung her blanket aside, 'but at least I didn't waste all those sleepless hours. I have,' she said, reaching for the jacket of her riding habit, which she'd rolled up and used for a pillow, 'come up with a plan. We're going to find Justin.'She frowned at the jacket. Pale blue velvet was not the ideal material for rolling up and pillowing a lady's head. Especially not a lady who'd taken refuge in a stable. She shook it, brushed off the straw and slid her arms into the sleeves.Ben stopped scratching, and gave her a hard stare.'It's no use telling me that now the battle is over, I should go to the authorities and ask them for details,' she informed him testily. 'They would simply order me to go home, like a good girl, and wait for official notification. Which would get sent to Blanchards. Well,' she huffed as she went to rummage in her saddlebag—which she'd draped over the stall door in case she needed it in a hurry—and came up with a comb, 'they did send notification to Blanchards, didn't they? And much good it did me.'She raised a hand to her head, discovered that most of her braids were still more or less intact and promptly thought better of attempting anything much in the way of grooming.'And anyway,' she said, shoving the comb back into the saddlebag, 'if I walked into headquarters, unescorted, they'd want to know what I was doing in Brussels on my own. And don't say how would they know I'd come here on my own, Ben, it's obvious. If Blanchards had come to Brussels with me, he would be the one at headquarters asking the questions. See?'Ben shuffled forward a little and licked his lips hopefully.'Yes, I do have more sausage in here,' she told him, dipping her hand once more into the saddlebag. 'You may as well have it,' she said, breaking off a piece and tossing it to the straw at his feet. Her stomach was still coiled into the hard knot that had made eating virtually impossible since the moment Blanchards had told her Gideon was dead. Though she'd still packed plenty of provisions when she'd run away from Antwerp, thinking it might take her a day or so to locate Gideon, or his commanding officer, Colonel Bennington Ffog. She wrinkled her nose as Ben disposed of the sausage in a few gulps. Why she'd thought, however briefly, that Bennington Ffog might be of any use, she couldn't imagine. It would be far better to find her oldest brother, Justin.'Now, Justin might be cross with me,' she said as she pushed open the stall door and ventured into the aisle, 'but he won't send me back to Antwerp without telling me what I need to know first. He might be the stuffiest, most arrogant, obnoxious man,' she said, peering out into the stable yard to make sure nobody was about. 'He may give me a thundering scold for leaving the safety of Antwerp, against his explicit orders, but he does at least understand what Gideon means to me.'With Ben trotting at her heels, Sarah made her way to the pump, where she quickly rinsed her face and hands. Ben took the opportunity to relieve himself and have a good sniff round. When she made for the stable again, though, he was right beside her.'Good boy,' she said, pausing to pat his head, before reaching for her riding hat, which she'd set on one of the doorposts.'The only problem is,' she said, holding her hat in place with one hand, while thrusting as much of her hair as she could under it, 'I'm not entirely sure where to find him. However,' she added, deftly securing everything in place with a hatpin, 'Mary Endacott will.'Ben dropped down on to his haunches, tilting his head to one side.'Yes, I know. She doesn't like me. And I don't blame her. But you have to admit, since she's lived in Brussels for years, and knows everyone, she's bound to know who we can ask for his direction if she doesn't already have it. And what's more,' she added, when he didn't look convinced, 'she's the one person who is likely to want to know it just as much as I do, since the poor girl is in love with him.'She lowered her head to fumble the buttons of her jacket closed as her mind dwelt on the last time she'd seen Mary, when Justin had been ordering her to leave Brussels, too. If she'd done as he'd told her…No. Mary wouldn't have left, not even had they still been betrothed. The school she ran was her livelihood. And Justin had forfeited any authority he might have thought he had over her the minute he broke off their relationship in such a brutal fashion.Besides, she wasn't the sort of woman to give up hope and sit about weeping, any more than Sarah was. Even after Justin had said all those horrid things, Mary would want to make sure he'd survived the battle, even if he didn't want to have anything more to do with her.She lifted her head, squared her shoulders and strode out of the stall on her way back to the water pump. This time she saw Pieter shambling across the yard, rubbing his eyes sleepily.'Be so good as to saddle my horse,' she said.He hesitated for a moment, only tugging at his cap and making for the stable once he saw Ben come trotting out and joining Lady Sarah at the pump, where she was now filling her water bottle.'I'm so glad I found you yesterday,' she said, bending down to stroke Ben's head as he lapped up the water splashing to the cobbles. 'At first I just thought stumbling across the regimental mascot was a sign I was in exactly the right place, at the right time. But today I'm thankful that having you with me means I won't have to face Mary alone.' It wasn't going to be easy. Mary had no reason to greet her warmly. Yet what was the worst Mary could do? Show her the door? Or not even let her inside? What was that, compared to what had already happened? If Gideon really was dead.Which she wasn't going to believe until somebody gave her some solid proofShe mounted Castor and, with Ben trotting at her side, that determination carried her as far as the Rue Haute, where Mary's school stood. But then doubts started assailing her from all sides. If Mary wouldn't speak to her, then who else could she turn to?'At least I won't have to knock on the front door and beg for permission to speak to her,' she observed, drawing Castor to a halt. For Mary was standing outside alongside a horse, talking to a group of bedraggled-looking men who stood with their mounts. But even though this meant she'd overcome the first hurdle she'd imagined, Sarah's spirits sank. For Mary was, as always, looking neat as a pin.Whereas she must look exactly as though—well, as though she was still wearing the same gown in which she'd spent a whole day on horseback, fighting her way against a tide of refugees fleeing the very place she wanted to reach more than anywhere on earth. And crawled through the mud to rescue Ben, and ended by sleeping in a stable because the landlady, upon whose compassion she'd relied, refused point blank to permit a muddy, fierce dog inside her house. No, you couldn't feel your best in a gown you'd been wearing for two days, especially when you'd put it through all that. Besides which, women like Mary, petite, pretty women with pert little noses, always did make her feel like a gangly, beaky beanpole. It was Ben who came to her rescue, for at least the second time in as many days, by letting out a series ofjoyful barks and bounding right into the group of men milling about on the front path. Because she'd been staring at Mary and wondering how on earth she was to persuade her to help, she hadn't been paying the men much heed. But now she noticed, as they bent to ruffle Ben's shaggy head rather than scattering in terror, that they were wearing the distinctive blue jackets of artillerymen. The blue jackets of her brother's unit, their facings and insignia only just recognisable under a coating of dirt of all kinds.Randall's Rogues. Here? What could that mean?Forgetting her own qualms about how Mary might treat her, Sarah urged Castor forward.'What is it? What has happened?' A chill foreboding ran a finger down her spine. 'Is it Justin?' Mary's lips thinned as she glanced up and saw Sarah. But after only a moment she appeared to relent.'We don't really know. Nobody can find him. They think…they think…' She gave an impatient little shake of her head. 'Can you believe they came here to look for him?'

The Secret Side of Lady Sarah By Book Gannet As I’ve not read the previous book in the series, I came to this one without any prior knowledge of Sarah or Tom. Partly I think this is a good thing, since it sounds like Sarah didn’t exactly cover herself in glory in the first book, but it’s also a bad thing. We meet Sarah after she’s ridden alone from Antwerp to Brussels, rescued a terrified dog, spent the night in the stables to protect her horse and then rides out onto the bloody fields of Waterloo in search of her twin brother – and her older brother too.Judging by her actions she seems like a plucky, intrepid kind of girl. However, her own opinion of herself (and that of those who know her) is quite different. I found it a little hard to match up the Sarah I was reading about with the Sarah who’s a mindless wigeon and gets other people into trouble. It just seemed so unlikely. But as the book progressed I learned more about who she was before and why she might have changed so much in such a short time.I actually quite liked her. The way she rides out in search of Gideon may have been mostly driven by grief, but was also brave, and I liked her uncertainty when Tom was thrust into her care. She’s never nursed anyone before, no one she knows would ever believe she could, but there’s no one else so she throws herself into the whole thing with gusto. I loved how it gave her confidence in herself and how Tom really grew to understand her, her fears and uncertainties and the person she’d been hiding inside all those years.I liked Tom too. He’s a typical womanizing rogue (not a rake, as Sarah points out, since her father was definitely one of those and a whole lot worse) that is at heart terribly misunderstood and not half as bad as he’s painted. He doesn’t think much of himself, but he thinks the world of Sarah and I loved how their relationship developed and deepened with mutual respect and trust and belief in each other.Despite the opening, there’s not a lot of action in this book, since it mostly takes place in one room, but I liked the intimate setting. It really gave the main characters a chance to get to know each other, far from the disapproval of society and family. However, the I-am-not-worthy and I-don’t-want-to-marry-anyone back and forth did get a little tedious towards the end, and all the characters connected to the other books seem awful. I’m sure if I'd read Mary’s story first I wouldn’t like Sarah, but I didn’t, so I find myself not liking Mary or Justin – and as for Flint… let’s say I wasn’t left too eager to find out his story.Enjoyable, easy to read, with a lovely romance and a couple of less-than-perfect characters in need of mutual redemption. It’s sweet, it’s romantic and the historical details were beautifully done.(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

It all takes place within a week so you don't have to worry with trying to figure out time frames etc. This is a bout a woman headstrong to not become the person that is 'expected' of a proper woman. or marrying the 'right' man to suit her inheritance. She would rather be a hermit living alone all her life than marry a man that would be the same as her Dad. He was a 'lady's' man and didn't care if her Mother knew it either. She has so many half siblings she wasn't real sure who all they really were. And that type of relationship she wanted nothing of.She sets out to proof her twin brother didn't die in battle; her family was happy to just 'hear' he had been killed. So she sneaks out exposing herself to all the aftermaths of what the brutal war holds. Seeing sights she never imagined she'd see. BUT when she accidentally gets herself in a situation she rescues a man that was knocking on deaths door. His soldiers help her rescue him and take him to her room versus the local hospital where surely he would die. She is 'forced' although soon it becomes not forced to care for a man that needed her. She was soon understanding life was more than having maids, and people waiting on her. She little by little start finding who she really wants to be although it may not be what society expects of her.The man she saves once he starts getting better realizes there's more to life than being the type of man her "Dad" is and that men shouldn't or don't have to be that way. That there is true love to be had. This is a little more 'adult situation' than I normally would like. But the book isn't 'flooded' with those situations, so doesn't ruin the story itself. Although without it the story may not would have come full circle. With that being said I wouldn't recommend this for a pre teen who may not have been exposed to, or understand adult situations before

By Julie Award-winning author Annie Burrows continues the enthralling Brides of Waterloo series with A Mistress for Major Bartlett, a heart-rending, intriguing and highly engrossing historical romance that is absolutely impossible to resist!Lady Sarah Latymor has spent most of her life feeling unloved and unappreciated by her family and her friends – except for her beloved twin brother, Gideon. As the only person in the world who cares about her and who makes life bearable, Gideon is a beacon of light in an increasingly dark and lonely world for Sarah and she is absolutely heartbroken when her twin announces that he’s going off to war to fight for his country and defeat the enemy. Heartbreak quickly gives way to devastation when the news reaches her that her twin has been killed and is missing in action. Unable to bear the agonising pain of not knowing her twin’s fate, Sarah realises that she’s got no other option open to her other then to head to the front line to find Gideon. Sarah had left her life behind for the dangers of the battlefield to find answers, but she never expected to find her salvation – or love -in the arms of the devastatingly handsome – but wounded – soldier, Tom Bartlett.Tom’s fearsome reputation on the battlefield is matched only by his prowess as a scoundrel with the ability to seduce any woman who strikes his fancy. Tom has never cared much about what other people thought of him. As a child, he had been misjudged and mistreated because of his father’s mistakes and penchant for gambling, and thus Tom had matured into a laidback daredevil with a passion for daring and danger. With a reputation as a shameless reprobate, distinct lack of funds and an inability to commit to any woman for longer than one night, Tom has spent the best part of his life avoiding the shackles of matrimony. But when he is rescued by a ministering angel in his hour of need, his resolve to stay stubbornly single begins to waver – until he realises that the woman who has been tending to him is none other than Lady Sarah Latymor, an innocent who is not only his social superior, but also his commanding officer’s virginal sister!Tom is well aware that Sarah’s selfless action could spell her ruin. While he doesn’t care a jot for his reputation, he is willing to do anything to protect Sarah from being cast aside from polite society. Although his head is telling him that the only sensible course of action is to demand that Sarah leaves him, his heart is breaking at the thought of spending the rest of his life without her by his side.Is their love strong enough to triumph against all the obstacles standing in their way? Or will the vast chasms that divide them succeed in tearing them apart?A Mistress for Major Bartlett is a spectacular tale of courage, redemption, hope and the healing power of love that gripped me from the very beginning and kept me mesmerized until the poignant denouement. Annie Burrows is a gifted storyteller who deftly blends passion, emotion, pathos and drama in an unforgettable historical romance that I was unable to put down.Sarah was a wonderfully believable, flawed and realistic heroine and her journey from spoiled and slightly lost society girl to a mature, confident and resilient woman will strike a chord with readers everywhere and Tom was a gorgeous, charismatic and beguiling hero no woman will be able to resist!A first-class Regency romance from a writer who gets better and better with every book she writes, A Mistress for Major Bartlett is the latest must-read tale from Annie Burrows’ talented pen! This review was originally published on Cataromance
