Excerpt from Differential and Integral CalculusThis book presents a first course in the calculus substantially as the author has taught it at the University of Michigan for a number of years. The following points may be mentioned as more or less prominent features of the book.In the treatment of each topic, the text is intended to contain a precise statement of the fundamental principle involved, and to insure the student's clear understanding of this principle, without distracting his attention by the discussion of a multitude of details. The accompanying exercises are intended to present the problem in hand in a great variety of forms and guises, and to train the student in adapting the general methods of the text to fit these various forms. The constant aim is to prevent the work from degenerating into mere mechanical routine, as it so often tends to do. Wherever possible, except in the purely formal parts of the course, the summarizing of the theory into rules or formulas which can be applied blindly has been avoided. Usagi Yojimbo Volume 29: Two Hundred Jizo, by Stan Sakai

About the Author Stan Sakai was born in Kyoto, Japan, grew up in Hawaii, and now lives in California with his children, Hannah and Matthew. He received a Fine Arts degree from the University of Hawaii, and did further studies at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. His creation, Usagi Yojimbo, is the story of a samurai rabbit living in a feudal Japan populated by anthropomorphic animals. It first appeared in Albedo Comics in 1984. Since then, Usagi has been on television as a guest of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and as toys, on clothing, in comic books, and in a series of trade paperback collections. Stan is also an award-winning letterer for his work on Sergio Aragonés' Groo the Wanderer, the Spider-Man Sunday newspaper strips as well as Usagi Yojimbo. He is the recipient of a Parents' Choice Award, an Inkpot Award, multiple Eisner Awards, two Spanish Haxturs, an American Library Association Award, and a National Cartoonists' Society Division Award. The author lives in Los Angeles CA.

I recommend beginning with Vol. 1 of course, but the tales here don't really depend on long running story lines. There are some returning characters it would help to be familiar with, but the gist of any characters we've seen before is well conveyed, so this isn't a bad place to start overall.For those who are new to Usagi, a comment from my review of Vol. 1 on Sakai's choice of medium:"The use of amorphous animals as the characters might seem unusual to first time readers, but the choice gives Sakai more visual diversity and symbolism to play with, and is executed with such finesse that it quickly becomes impossible to imagine the book without this choice. Don't mistake the presence of animals as people as a sign this is a 'kid's book.' Usagi Yojimbo covers a period of war, political unrest, and an unhealthy level of danger and can get dark and bloody at times."This trade contains six short stories, ranging from 9 to 49 pages. The two shortest open the trade and are focused tales about a troubled artist and a dishonored ghost respectively. There are strong themes and significant impact for such short pieces."Murder at the Inn" features the return of Inspector Ishida in another nice little well-written, solvable mystery.The remaining three stories all feature a unique aspect of the time and place: jizo statues, ice running and soy sauce making. Sakai shares the details and cultural significance of these activities against his normal backdrop of intrigue, conflict and honor.While nothing here is ground breaking or jaw dropping, Two Hundred Jizo features a favorite character's return and several engaging tales that are up to Sakai's usual high standards.

Overall i think i liked Red Scorpion slightly better but that doesn't take away from this book. The 200 Jizo story was my favorite. I love the endings with a slight twist.Issues #145 and #146 have already released and #147 comes out the 15th. what are you waiting for?

About the Author Noel James, Professor of Geology at Queen’s University, Canada, has, for over 40 years focused his research on carbonate sediments and rocks that range from the modern seafloor to the Archean, studying their origin via extensive marine and terrestrial fieldwork, petrography, and geochemistry. He has taught numerous courses on oceanography, carbonate sedimentology, petroleum geology and the evolution of North America to undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals as well as editing or authoring nine scientific books. He has been honoured many times by learned societies, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and a Member of the Order of Canada. Brian Jones, Distinguished University Professor (Geology) at the University of Alberta, Canada, has, for over 40 years taught numerous courses at the introductory and advanced level on carbonate sedimentology and diagenesis. His research on carbonates has concentrated on the deposition and diagenesis of modern and Cenozoic deposits in the Caribbean, surface and subsurface Paleozoic rocks in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, many of which are prolific hydrocarbon reservoirs, and spring deposits worldwide. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and the first Middleton Medalist of the Geological Association of Canada.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. slightly dated but By linguist This is a swashbuckling cloak and dagger story of a young man's growth, his starry-eyed service to his country to win the hand of his first love and make a name for himself, his amorous adventures and finally his return to his first true love. There is complicated political chicanery and amazing realism in battle descriptions. I needed to consult various books about some obscure French adventures in the Netherlands, and some of the language seems stale or dated, but on the whole it is worth the slog through the politics of the time. One of Bel Rose's loves grows in her character and learns sacrifice, becoming a kind of martyr. So it is a story of the growth and education of at least two of the main characters. This reading requires a bit more from the reader than many lazy readers fond of quick reads may be willing to give, but I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the descriptions of battles. It is truly a "You are there" experience. The author gives a nasty read to these glorious battles showing what a sad thing war is, and how senseless.

Numerous extra content was translated such as the extras in between chapters such as two character profiles as well as the other drawings and detailing the rank of students in various activities. Along those lines the afterward was translated as well as the Nagisa character model sheet page.Content wise, Matsui introduced another character into the Assassination Classroom who deserves much more time. In terms of the larger plot the two chapters on this character felt the most important to advancing the story. The other chapters felt like one/two chapter side events to help develop the students or shed more light into their teachers or the world at hand.

The one at which Longueville had taken up his abode was entered by a dark, pestiferous arch-way, surmounted by a sign which at a distance might have been read by the travellers as the Dantean injunction to renounce all hope. The other was not far off, and the day after his arrival, as he passed it, he saw two ladies going in who evidently belonged to the large fraternity of Anglo-Saxon tourists, and one of whom was young and carried herself very well. Longueville had his share—or more than his share—of gallantry, and this incident awakened a regret.

Confident early-James By Keris Nine One of Henry James' earlier works, Confidence (1879) is set in the familiar territory of young rich Americans on extended trips in Europe, making friendships and romantic acquaintances with other Americans in the expatriate society that has been established in the glamorous settings of Italy, Germany, Switzerland and France. Less melodramatic than his previous novel, The American, and therefore showing less of the influence of European writers, Confidence rather establishes familiar Jamesian themes and explores ideas that contrast European Old World and American society, albeit in a style that is rather more light-hearted that his more notable later works, with the advantage however that it is still entertaining and more readable than some of the latter-day novels.The story is centred on Bernard Longueville, a young man travelling freely around Europe, sketching and painting, who meets two fellow Americans in Siena - a Mrs Vivian and her daughter Angela, who he sketches while she inadvertently poses picturesquely outside a church waiting for her mother. Bernard expresses his admiration for the young woman and offers her the sketch, but is not so delicately rebuffed by the rather defensive and dismissive young woman. A few weeks later, Bernard receives a letter from his friend Gordon Wright in Baden Baden, exclaiming that he is in love and wants to be married. Bernard rushes to visit his friend and discovers that the object of his affections is none other than the same young woman he painted in Siena.The majority of the novel explores at length Bernard's attempts to comprehend the actions and motives of Angela Vivian, a young lady who does not act like other society girls such as their rather feather-headed travelling companion Blanche Evers. This attempt to get to the bottom of this strange but undeniably fascinating young woman is initially on the request of his friend Gordon, but Longueville has difficulty coming to terms with his own feelings for Miss Vivian.Confidence is a slight work by James, a little longer than it needs to be, but witty and entertaining all the same, delighting in the "intellectual fencing" that goes on in the realm of human interaction, relationships and communication, seeking to find truth in the less than precise - and sometimes even contradictory and deceptive - use of language. James manages to do this without over-elaboration, using some nice allusions and metaphors (losing himself to a bout of gambling, although successful, Bernard at one point realises that contrary to the impression of controlling his actions, "he had not been playing - he had been played with"), and without the extravagant verbosity, over-analysis and sometimes unendurable length of his latter works.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Due diligence undermined By H. Schneider Two leisure-burdened young Americans frolic around Europe during the 1850s. One is rich and science minded and without a sense of humor or common sense, the other just well to do and art minded and a little inconsistent and frivolous. They meet some women and try to figure out what they think of them. The artsy one (Bernard) is more in the focus of the narration. His friend (Gordon) asks him to figure out what he thinks of the woman to whom he has recently proposed and who has rejected him (Angela).Our hero tries to do that and the inevitable complications happen. The woman becomes aware of the consulting project and sabotages the investigation by odd behavior. (This situation is reminiscent of the physics problem that the observation of an experiment tends to interfere with the results of the experiment.)The basic story sounds as old and solid as a Boccaccio tale. The Decamerone would have gone straight for a love affair between the hero and his spying object, but James didn't do things nice and easy. He thrives on the roundabout way. Frankly speaking, James overdoes the complications of the plot towards the end. Had it shut down after 25 chapters instead of 30, the novel were better.James lets the spy give his friend a negative verdict on the advisability to renew the quest for the woman. Decisions in other directions are taken (Gordon marries somebody else), but there will be a later re-match, a second round of guessing.The novel is structured like an hour glass: the first half set in Italy and Germany, then an interruption (with an un-detailed Asia trip), then a continuation, some years later, in NY and France. By now, Bernard has started to feel the emptiness of his life, while Gordon has at least started doing something: he owns a chemistry research lab (unclear if for profit or not).One of my favorite little texts by Bert Brecht is this:Herr K met a man whom he had not seen for a while. You have not changed, said the man. Herr K paled.Consider this Jamesian version, which has clear historical precedence, making Brecht a plagiarist:You are the same man I used to know (says Gordon to Bernard when they meet again).I am sorry for that (says Bernard). (The dialogue is repeated by two other protagonists later in the story.)

If your kids like "Where the Sidewalk Ends", they'll probably like these poems too.C.J. Dennis is Austrailian and this was written in 1917, every once in awhile, there's an odd word, but the poems are still very fun and humorous today, especially for the child who uses their imagination. THe illustrations are cool too, they come across great on the Kindle and if you want to see them in color, Gutenberg has them in color in the html format.

Nan Jones has a powerful gift of putting words together in a compelling and engaging way; and her heart is revealed and exposed throughout this amazing book. I pushed aside some of my "daily" tasks in order to read this book all the way through in one day. After meeting Nan at a conference last summer, I had a very nominal sense of the gist of this book and, honestly, I really wondered how someone could write with painful honesty and still maintain an appropriateness that was God honoring. Well, Nan (along with God's guidance) blessed the world with a book full of truth and love. I am not a pastor's wife but so much of her encouragement and her focus on God is easily transferable to my life issues. I will be purchasing more copies to give as gifts. Most of the book reads like a travel journal. Â«he saw this here and saw that thereÂ». that works very well for me because i know the character of Mr. Glasier. He does a wonderful job narrating our time travel back to the 1890's. with himself less the center of attension that he is in his other books. It is a good read.

All of the before the dark times came was awesome. We learn a lot about the world these people live in as well as about the fire children themselves. Things started to fall apart after Yulla came above ground and met Ember. There wasn't any insta love but the romance in this moved a little to quickly. It would have been better if it would have been done a little slower. The plot/story after Yulla should have been amazing but it fell short. It became heavy with action and little dialogue. Which was shame. I really wish that the publisher would have had the author do a little more with this book because it could have been amazing. But as it sits. For me it was more like a 3rd draft than a final story.All in all I think that if this book appeals to you then you should give it a try. Go Into This One Knowinga little insta love, great start bad finish
