By LilMissMolly The Red Lady is a classic short story that was written almost 100 years ago by Katharine Newline Burt. This book is written in a gothic first-person style with mysterious apparitions, strange events, and even a suspicious death. And its language and dialog is very similar to what a reader might find today in another book in this genre.The story revolves around Janice Gale who is a new housekeeper at a country estate in the Southern United States (I pictured South Carolina while I was listening). After most of the house staff quit after repeatedly seeing ghosts, Janice becomes suspicious of the “ghost” and begins an investigation into the strange happenings around the manor house. It turns out this “ghost” is searching for lost Russian jewels. To complicate matters, Janice falls for one of the houseguests, who believes she has a split personality disorder because the ghost looks just like her!I listened to the Audible version of this audiobook narrated by Daniela Acitelli who did an admirable job. I received a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest unbiased review.

"A Good Suspenseful Tale Brought Back From the 20s" By Teresa I listened to the Audible audio version of this book.THE RED LADY was a good, suspenseful book completely refreshed with terrific audio. The story was intriguing and a page turner. It was twisty with a good plot. Katharine Newlin Burt penned many stories including Snow Blind. I hope more of this author's work is presented in audio format. I love her writing.Daniela Acitelli did a fantastic job putting her voice to this book. She's a wonderful voice actor and has perfect voice inflections. Her tone and pace added an extra feel of suspense that I especially enjoyed. By Jan Told in first person.Aspects of the plot would not fly today (housekeeper, treatment of laborers), but the basics of plotline and characterization are timeless. Listener is kept in suspense over the reasoning for happenings, as well as determining who are good guys vs bad guys. Denouement is startling and most unexpected!Ms. Acitelli brings it all to life! She is able to differentiate characters well, and portray their emotions clearly.This book was gifted to me in exchange for an honest review

By lyndonbrecht I like this book but it is not quite as good as others in a consistently excellent series. The book presents a lot of information, but I wish there had been a little more natural history in a couple of places. The chapter on dams could be more helpful, but instead it's mostly what people have thought about beavers, more or less as a trope. Illustrations are excellent throughout, and the writing is excellent. Four stars rather than five for what I think to be slightly lacking content in natural history.That said, this is a good book. After presenting the beaver's evolutionary history and biology (and differentiating between the American and Eurasian beaver), the author has structured the book on four themes, a chapter for each: musk, fur, beaver architecture and what might be called the beaver as ecologist. These are presented mostly as how humans have used the animal, without being as judgmental as some authors are about commodification--perhaps because beavers are resilient and are making a comeback in many areas.The chapter on musk concerns the glands near the anus used by beavers to mark territory (it has other uses). Termed castoreum, the substance has been used as a medicinal, and as an ingredient in perfumes (and still is). The substance is widely used, says Poliquin, as a flavor substitute for vanilla in baked goods. Likely there are some vegan baked goods that are a tad less vegan than consumers think. This is one reason that beavers were wiped out in most of their historic range (western and northern Europe to Iran and Iraq, east to China), the medicinal use.Chapter 3 on fur is perhaps the best in the book. Beaver fur has a unique undercoat that makes excellent felt for hats once hugely popular. The hats kept their shape for a long time and were waterproof. The hats were expensive, and the processing involved mercury, so the Mad Hatter is not just an amusing figure, but call it the beaver's revenge. Those hats in paintings of wealthy burghers by the Dutch Masters are beaver hats.The trade in beaver skins was, as readers would know, extremely important in the settlement of North America, with profound impact on the native peoples and the ecosystem.Chapter 4 looks at beaver architecture, dams and all, not so much from the standpoint of natural history but from the view of beaver as trope, of hard worker in a classless society, as encapsulated in the later phrase "eager beaver". Animals as symbols were important in the literature of the 1700s in particular, although the use of animals in heraldry and as symbols goes back many centuries. This is the weakest chapter of the book.Chapter 5 discusses the beaver as ecosystem manager, a 21st century trope perhaps as much symbol as anything the beaver symbolized centuries ago. This chapter has some fascinating information. North America now has 15 to 25 million beavers, which I would think must be the highest number since the beaver trade began in the 1600s. Beavers were somehow transported to Patagonia, where they are seen as an invasive pest species, and a program to eliminate them--unusually, cooperation between Chile and Argentina--is under way. The American beaver has been transplanted to Europe in an attempt to restore beaver populations, but the American species is more aggressive and is replacing the native species. And, each year a beaver eats about a metric ton of wood, equal to about 215 trees, and if you think of 15 to 25 million beavers in North America each consuming 215 trees the species mush be having a major impact on habitat, apparently under the radar.

Most people that know even a tiny bit of Lemuria knows it by the name of MU. It was actually in the Pacific Ocean as a extremely large island. Reading the Symbols of Mu does explain more of the true beginning that really does place Eden as East of the Garden. The evils of Atlantis destroyed Lemuria and as the domino falls, Atlantis fell next. Symbols are the writing in the sand shown by Christ as He was asked a question. A picture is worth a thousand words. Actions speak louder than words.

By A Chicago Reader Natalie owns a small and up and coming modeling agency, which Adam uses for his 'Fantasy Girl' cosmetic line. When Adam finds out his brother-in-law is having an affair with one of Natalie's models he demands to meet with her ASAP. When they meet, Adam is very attracted to her, but threatens to pull his business unless she can get her model to end the affair. Their attraction grows and they begin to date, but their relationship gets complicated by various family members who are part of the problem and solution.This is a fast read with well developed characters. The story will make you laugh, but at times also make you mad at how manipulative family can be!Thank goodness this is romance fiction and is supposed to have a Happily Ever After...

But the new contract could easily be the ruin of Natalie's small business when Judith has a flagrant affair with the Thornton Cosmetics' Vice President of PR, who just happens to be Adam Thornton's brother-in-law. Adam has worked hard to make his Company a global force in the beauty world and he's very protective of his sister, Tracy. Adam's covered up his BIL Jason's affairs for years, because he knew that Tracy would be devastated. So Adam plays tough with Natalie for her to get Judith to back off, only Adam doesn't know that the "Beauty Girl" happens to be Natalie's sister, and when he does, he shows Natalie the power he welds in the business world. Only Adam and Natalie can't stay enemies; their attraction is very intense. And when they begin an affair, Natalie fears that Adam will believe she's just protecting her firm and sealing a deal for the new "Fantasy Girl" campaign.I really enjoyed this one. There were a few amazing battles of wills and a wonderful scene where Adam eats some delicious crow. Both Natalie and Adam are very likeable, and the secondary characters were perfect for the plot and conflict. When Adam and Natalie are not butting heads, their chemistry is wonderful. :D

And Adam Thornton, her irate client, was not a man to be trifled with. Ruthless in business, he was also dangerous to love, as Natalie discovered. For what he wanted most of all was Natalie - as his mistress!

Brown observed people and used inductive reasoning to solve a crime. Brown tries to think as the criminal would to solve a crime. If you can discover the motive then you can discover the perpetrator. It works very good in fiction. You read a description of the events as seen by other people, then a solution follows. The clues are subtle and based on people's actions, the ending is often surprising. Most written stories don't reveal the ending until the last pages or chapters. These stories are always entertaining and amusing, even if some details are now extinct, or may seem improbable to modern readers.This book is dedicated to Patricia Burke.Here is the list of these eight short stories from 1923.1) The Resurrection of Father Brown. Fr. Brown was sent to a small country in northern South America. An American reporter wrote stories about him that attracted attention. At night two strangers attacked Fr. Brown, leaving him dying. The next day people see Fr. Brown arise from his coffin! It was a hoax intended for political reasons.2) The Arrow of Heaven. Three millionaires have been murdered. Fr. Brown has been asked for advice by millionaire Brander Merton. But a silent arrow has quieted Merton! Can this murder be solved? There is a surprising ending.3) The Oracle of the Dog. Colonel Druce was found stabbed in his back by an unknown hand in his summer house. Nobody was seen there. Do dogs howl when a person dies? Fr. Brown explains the actions of the dog and how it relates to the murder.4) The Miracle of Moon Crescent. Warren Wynd lives his huge apartment house. He was famous for making sound judgments on human character. Fr. Brown arrives for a visit but Wynd has disappeared from his flat! A body is found in the garden below. How could Wynd have left from a door that was watched? Few people are reliable eyewitnesses says Professor Vair. Fr. Brown explains what must have happened.5) The Curse of the Golden Cross. Six people sat in a large ship sailing from America to England. A Christian tomb from the Dark Ages was found, embalmed in a manner known to the Greeks and Egyptians but unknown in the West at that time. Professor Smail tells Fr. Brown of an old deadly threat. Is there a curse on anyone who would disturb this tomb? Who killed the Reverend John Walters? Fr. Brown explains.6) The Dagger with Wings. The last of three brothers asked for police protection. The Medical Officer asked Fr. Brown to talk to Arnold Aylmar. Fr. Brown does, then calls for 4 or 5 policemen to surround the house. Soon he hears a shot and sees a body in the snow, no footprints around it! But Fr. Brown isn't fooled by a story.7) The Doom of the Darnaways. This old family lives in a decaying house, an heir from Australia promises hope. Does a family legend guarantee a descendant's fate? No, says Fr. Brown. There is a noise from upstairs, they find a dead man. A suicide? Fr. Brown says it was murder, not from a legend. He explains how it was done by someone they overlooked.8) The Ghost of Gideon Wise. Three corporate owners plan a lock-out of their workers and will call it a strike. They send Byrne to negotiate with the union leaders. But the plans to arrest the union leaders failed as all three corporate owners were killed simultaneously at three separated places! One man has seen a ghost! Or is it real? Fr. Brown points out the effect of this confession, the reappearance of one murdered man, and how it relates to the other two murders!The last story is an example of why Gilbert Keith Chesterton was famous for his paradoxical stories and viewpoints.

Chesterton treats us to another set of bizarre crimes that only his "stumpy" Roman Catholic prelate has the wisdom and mindset to solve. As usual, Chesterton loves playing with early 20th century class distinctions, "common-sense" assumptions and the often anti-Catholic biases of his characters. He loves showing, through his characters, how those who hold themselves superior to the "fantasies" of Brown's Catholic faith themselves devolve into superstitious blithering when faced with the tiniest of mysteries.Brown finds himself as the main event at his own funeral (The resurrection of Father Brown), contemplating the possibility of death from the sky (The arrow of heaven), piercing the mystery of a dog's "prophetic" behavior (The oracle of the dog) and facing off against a curse hanging about a medieval burial (The curse of the golden cross). In each story, Brown's ability to see past the assumptions that stymie his companions can seem facile and repetitious. But Chesterton provides such a bevy of social insights and beautiful prose that these small annoyances are easily forgiven.Tom Whitworth ably read the audio version that I listened to, which is sadly out of production. Listen to Whitworth on audio versions of other collections of Father Brown stories.

A Solinas "The Incredulity of Father Brown" could just as easily have been called "Father Brown Goes To America," because the first half of this third short-story collection is saturated with America and Americans.But whatever side of the pond G.K. Chesterton writes about, his gnomish little priest-detective is still a font of psychological and theological know-how. "The Incredulity of Father Brown" is a bit more religiously-tinged than Chesterton's prior mystery stories, but the core of his stories is still the same -- a kindly little priest who effortlessly unravels bizarre and seemingly unsolvable mysteries.While working in a South American mission, in an unspecified country about to erupt in a revolution, Father Brown becomes a figure of interest to the United States media (mostly due to an atheist reporter's work). Shock is widespread when the little priest is clubbed to death by an unknown assailant -- only to rise from his coffin, very much alive and annoyed. Is it a miracle, or something much more mundane?His American adventures continue in the United States, when the little priest is present when a millionaire is killed by an Amerindian arrow -- supposedly caused by a cursed relic. It's not the only curse he has to deal with: a golden cross and an embalmed body pursued by a murderous stalker, a "doom" on a rather inbred aristocratic clan, and a vengeful man who seems to have demonic powers -- and a hysterical potential victim intent on using "silver magic."He also deals with a few cases that are less supernatural in theme, but still pretty befuddling -- such as a trio of millionaires murdered with a connection to communism, a seaside hotel whose disbelievers are baffled by a murder, and a dog that may (or may not) hold the key to a murder.G.K. Chesterton liked to write mysteries that were a lot simpler than they appeared to be, or else had some sort of bizarre twist at the end. Both kinds of mysteries show up in this collection of short stories, but only occasionally can readers guess what is going on, until Father Brown spells it out with some little detail of human nature, historical inaccuracy, or a simple fact of reality ("Real mystics don't hide mysteries, they revealthem").And Father Brown is a likable little guy, who looks like an everyday, shabby little rlceric and doesn't have to overwork himself to solve mysteries. It's his shrewd brain and rather childlike straightforwardness that carries him through, as well as his uncanny knowledge of human nature and and his humble religious principles ("I believe in miracles. I believe in man-eating tigers, but I don't see them running about everywhere..")If there's a flaw, it's the rather dated racial descriptions, although those were typical of the time. Chesterton's writing is absolutely exquisite, like poetry rendered down into prose ("... the pale green bitter waters of the sea, and the flowers would be drowned and strangled in seaweed"), especially in Father Brown's expeditions into ice-encased mansions, moonlit ruins and wild South American jungles.The little old priest has a lot to be amazed by in "The Incredulity of Father Brown," a short but genuinely bewildering collection of Chesterton's mysteries. Definitely worth reading, whether for the insights or the whodunnits.

By Mark Roy Mizener Profoundly sensitive and insightful, Justin Spring dances through life by sharing his soul with all of those who have had the pleasure of reading his poetry. When Justin walks down the street, he carries you with him, whether you are in his pocket or on his shoulder, he takes you on a journey... Justin is like a cross between Woody Allen and Dante Aligheri. His heart and soul are expressed through the characters that he creates, and the reader becomes one with the writer by feeling without effort the ongoing passage between darkness and light, hope and fear, tears and joy, and always humor! How nice to be reminded about spontaneous bliss! And so I look forward to one day again making a snow angel!

While Song was a good story it struggled with being very wordy and overly detailed dialogue. If you are interested in seeing what Asperger’s is like, Song is a good book to read. While you don’t have to have read Song to follow Allouette’s Dream it would help as it introduces the world and concept in Dream.Allouette’s Dream is the story of Sarah Kondal Seaton, the sixteen year old daughter of Richard and Dorothy Seaton. She is the first human and first Jewish child born off-world. She is a skilled martial artist. When Margaret learns the universe is moving toward rapid destruction, she comes to Kondal to talk to her friends.The source of the destruction is a anomaly interest time stream. The prototype for the string projector which powered the Allouette was built before any of them were born. She concluded that someone will have to go back in time to build it. What she didn’t expect at that time was that going back untimely would also carry the mission of preventing the assassination of Adolf Hitler.Sarah is chosen to travel back with only a slight hope of returning to the future.Sarah is a strong young woman who acts like the teenager she is, but also as a caring and ethical adult in her own right. One of the things I enjoy about Andrew’s writing is the care he takes not just to depict ethical characters but to then put their morals to the test in a way that aligns with the plot.When you read Allouette’s Dream be prepared to get a recap of parts of Song as it affects the character in Dream. You will also get recaps of events in Allouette’s Dream which happened earlier in the book.They aren’t long enough to push most readers out of the book, but you will have a number of times of deja vu.That isn’t a sufficient problem to stop me recommending a very good book to readers of sci fi, readers who want to see Jewish characters or people who just like a good tale.
