Problem-Solving and Selected Topics in Euclidean Geometry: In the Spirit of the Mathematical Olympiads, by Sotirios E. Louridas, Michael Th. Rassias

Review

From the reviews:

“Sotirios E. Louridas and Michael Th. Rassias, the authors of the book at hand, put together an excellent collection of problems for practice. They provide detailed solutions following the masters of that skill. … an active reader would greatly benefit from reading the book; while working out the problems is bound to sharpen his or her problem solving skills. … it’s a worthy addition to a library of a problem solver.”

―Alex Bogomolny, MAA Reviews, December, 2013

"The book is a wonderful presentation of the essential concepts, ideas and results of Euclidean Geometry useful in solving olympiad problems of various level of difficulties. The theoretical part is excellently illustrated by challenging olympiad problems. The complete solutions to these problems are carefully presented, most of them together with several interesting comments and remarks. ... All in all the text is a highly recommendable choice for any olympiad training program, and fills some gaps in the existing literature in Euclidean Geometry. The book is a very useful source of models and ideas for students, teachers, heads of national teams and authors of problems, as well as for people who are interested in mathematics and solving difficult problems."

―Mihaly Bencze, EMS Newsletter, November 2013

"A subject of high interest for problem-solving in Euclidean Geometry is the application of geometric transformations ... The authors have succeeded to study with great accuracy these transformations. Additionally, they have applied them in order to obtain very nice solutions for some quite challenging problems ... The book is full of new and challenging ideas that will provide guidance and inspiration for future study in the fundamental area of Euclidean Geometry. The large collection of problems in this book provides a valuable recourse for advanced high school students, university undergraduates, instructors, and Mathematics coaches preparing students to participate in mathematical Olympiads...."

―Nicusor Minculete, Gazeta Matematică, Seria B., 10/2013

"This book provides an essential presentation of concepts and ideas as well as problems with their solutions in Euclidean Geometry, a traditional and still challenging part of Geometry.

―Dorian Andrica, Zentralblatt

"The book is mainly devoted to several very interesting problems, some of which constructed by the authors, that have been presented in a rigorous and self-contained manner. Emphasis is given in the discussion of a variety of methods, which play a significant role for the solution of problems in Euclidean Geometry. The book will be of particular interest to students and teachers who train them for Mathematical Olympiads and other Mathematical Contests. Additionally to everyone who enjoys studying some of the jewels of Euclidean Geometry and has some special love for good problems and beautiful ideas. ... The Foreword of the book has been written by Michael H. Freedman (Fields Medal in Mathematics, 1986) ... The authors deserve congratulations for their excellent effort and success to provide a high quality service in fundamental mathematics. " ―Jose Luis Diaz Barrero, Octogon Mathematical Magazine, October 2013

"Sixty-five problems and their solutions are arranged in three parts: problems based on basic theory, problems based on advancedtheory, and geometric inequalities. Some problems were included in International Mathematical Olympiads (IMOs) or proposed in short lists in IMOs ... the problem part of the book ... contains a collection of interesting problems. ... Chapter 4 seeks to "present some of the most essential theorems of Euclidean Geometry". Some of these theorems (Pythagoras', Ceva's, Menelaus') are important indeed and applicable to many problems."

―Yury J. Ionin, Mathematical Reviews, January 2014

"There are many excellent books on plane Euclidean geometry, exploring the subject at various levels. The book under review, which is foreworded by Michael H. Freedman (Fields Medal, 1986), adds yet another facet to this colorful subject. This delightful book presents a collection of problems in plane Euclidean geometry in the spirit of mathematical olympiads, along with their solutions. Additionally, it provides essential theory of plane Euclidean geometry, with proofs of some fundamental theorems. As such, this monograph is an excellent training manual to use in preparation for mathematical competitions and olympiads. Hence, this is a book that belongs in all academic libraries, from high school through graduate level."

―Abraham A. Ungar, Acta Universitatis Apulensis, 40/2014.

From the Back Cover

Problem-Solving and Selected Topics in Euclidean Geometry: In the Spirit of the Mathematical Olympiads contains theorems of particular value for the solution of Olympiad-caliber problems in Euclidean Geometry. Selected geometric problems, which have been given in International Mathematical Olympiads (IMO) or proposed in short lists in IMO, are discussed. Additionally, a number of new problems proposed by leading mathematicians in the subject with their step-by-step solutions are presented. The book teaches mathematical thinking through Geometry and provides inspiration for both students and teachers.

From the Foreword: “…Young people need such texts, grounded in our shared intellectual history and challenging them to excel and create a continuity with the past. Geometry has seemed destined to give way in our modern computerized world to algebra. As with Michael Th. Rassias’ previous homonymous book on number theory, it is a pleasure to see the mental discipline of the ancient Greeks so well represented to a youthful audience.”

In this Shirley Jacksonesque graphic novel, set in a horrific (and blackly funny) post-apocalyptic world, a group goes in search of a semi-civilized city.

Josh Simmons returns with his first full-length graphic novel since 2007’s acclaimed House. A group of women, one man, and two dogs are making their way through a post-apocalyptic world in search of a city that supposedly still has electricity and some sort of civilization. Along the way, they go to a comedy club, take a drug called Gumdrop, and encounter gangs of men who are either fools, lunatics, or murderous sadists. In other words, all manner of terrors. Josh Simmons is one of the field’s most distinctive voices in the horror genre (The Furry Trap, House), and this full-length graphic novel is his best work yet, echoing director John Carpenter’s perfect tick-tock pacing, as well as Shirley Jackson’s ability to transcend genre and turn it into literature. Black & white

Black River, by Josh Simmons

Review “Postapocalyptic storytelling isn’t exactly in short supply for any medium these days, but Josh Simmons does it so damn well that you’ll instantly forgive him for picking a well-worn concept. Black River... is unforgettably brutal. The vignettes ― a frigid orgy, a set from a calmly insane stand-up comic, an underwater hallucination ― are as visceral as they are eerie.” (Abraham Riesman - Vulture)“...[A]n amazing depiction of bleakness... Simmons is no stranger to creating atmospheric horror, using dense black-and-white linework for vivid depictions of destroyed cities and people with nothing left to lose. Dead, angular trees, plain, grimy clothing, and eyes that range from burnt-out to sheer insanity mix with swirling, angry backgrounds, setting a scene better than any horror movie could.” (Publishers Weekly)“Simmons is a grimly witty take-no-prisoners storyteller, and his smart and violent tale is well paced and startling.” (Richard Pachter - The Miami Herald)“Simmons' take on the end of the world--fittingly illustrated entirely in black and white--is gruesome and brutal. Not for the squeamish--and for mature readers only--it is a tale of our biological response to our looming demise. Even when life is at its most despairing and unconquerable, we persist. ...[F]or fans of such melancholic end of world scenarios as Cormac McCarthy's The Road, it is sure to be a dark and grim treat.” (Zach Hollwedel - Under the Radar)“Josh Simmons’ Black River is an impressively unnerving work, a slim black-and-white tale of a group of (mostly) women making their way through a post-apocalyptic landscape, struggling for survival and hope. ... Informed by dreams and shot through with gut-level anxiety rather than heroic cliché, Black River winds in an unpredictable pattern. No one is safe. No one is nice. Any one of its characters could be us.” (Hillary Brown - Paste)“...[Black River] is a dark, post-apocalyptic survivalist story that makes The Walking Dead read like an all-ages comic. ... Nihilistic, apocalyptic fiction seems a dime a dozen in today’s landscape, but Simmons manages to shock most jaded readers by giving you the sense that anything horrible can and will happen. There are some seriously disturbing scenes that are made all the more chilling by Simmons’ black and white artwork and the seeming glee he takes in depicting them. That’s not to say it’s a completely dire read―the dark humor gives these women a strange but believable presence and life within this terrible world.” (Rich Barrett - Mental Floss)“It’s a relentlessly grim story, without even The Walking Dead’s zombie menace to blame for humankind’s descent into cruelty and violence―and the shreds of civilization that do remain make it even more horrific. Simmons contrasts the austere beauty of the winter world with the frantic, gushing human struggle beneath.” (Heidi MacDonald - The Beat)“If you're looking for happy endings, this isn't the comic for you. There's only one type of closure in this world, and the most anyone can hope for is that when death comes it is swift. Josh Simmons does not pretend otherwise, and Black River is all the more powerful for it. This is a bleak, chilling but excellent graphic novel.” (Pete Redrup - The Quietus)“[Black River] use[s] genre not to entertain, but to carve away at something rotten. [It] document[s] a kind of moral entropy―the creeping disintegration of everything right and good ...think The Road, but filmed by Herschell Gordon Lewis...” (Sean Rogers - The Comics Journal)“As creepy and dark as Black River gets, it never loses its sense of humanity...” (Andrew Yates - Comics Tavern)“This is a book about survival, told with delicacy and weight. ... This is a very fine comic indeed, and depending on how much gore you can stomach, this is a must read.” (Daniel Carpenter - Bookmunch)“Black River, unlike the many other post-apocalyptic stories, doesn’t give its reader the satisfaction of a glimmer of hope. Nothing is going to get better. No one is going to survive.” (Alex Hoffman - Sequential State)“Black River is one of the most uncompromisingly brutal, bleak and violent books I’ve read in quite some time.” (Andy Wolverton - Journeys in Darkness and Light)

In the dystopian literature that I've actually read By Erick S Haight In fiction, when given the choice between utopia and dystopia, I tend to fall into the more pessimistic camp. At the movies, whether it's lighter (as in "Mad Max: Fury Road") or a bit darker and sardonic (as in Terry Gilliam's cut of "Brazil"), dystopian visions seem more realistic. Which is more likely to come to fruition years from now -- the gleaming electronics of "Prometheus" or the dessicated dank of "Alien"? The future strikes me as more likely to be parched and rusting, the beginning of "WALL-E" rather than the end, and while I hope for otherwise, I'm preparing for the worst. In the dystopian literature that I've actually read, there is only one masterpiece: "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy. Relentless in tone and economical in prose, it's the kind of work that I wholeheartedly recommend to everyone despite the knowledge that it might devastate the reader with images that you'll never be able to shake. (I even bought it for my father, which is sort of horrible if you've actually read the book.) To unpack everything that McCarthy pours into nearly each sentence is to admire a master of craft at the apex of his abilities, and I'm not sure I'll ever read anything so moving and memorable again in my life.Having said that, "Black River" by Josh Simmons is a new graphic novel that comes as close to McCarthy's magnum opus as any graphic novelist ever will, and it's hung with me all day. Mordantly humorous and bleakly harrowing, with an ending that offers as much hope as one can see with one's eyes squeezed shut, Simmons has written and drawn a richly detailed universe despite the brevity of presentation that a slim black-and-white tome offers. Where ongoing graphic novels such as "The Walking Dead" detail periods of hope as humans interact within the ruins of civilizations past, "Black River" offers no such illusions of conciliatory contact. When the s*** goes down -- and "Black River" is snapshot after snapshot of a world of unrelenting and pervasive s*** -- you'll never be able to wash the s*** stains from your soul. And if you're like me, you can't get enough of these snapshots, even if they can be hard to look at from time to time.

The artist/writer has become a real master of surrealist horror. There is no predicting where one of his stories will go; you just know it's going to end in tears, or some less pleasant bodily fluid. "Black River" is no exception. It's his longest and wordiest story, with the most characters, and most potential for fear and dread. The story seems simple at first. Some undetermined apocalypse has reduced civilization to husks, occupied by tired, dirty, heartless scavengers. Simmons focuses on a shifting crew of women, plus a quiet man who seems to be along for hook-ups, as they travel to something more secure. If you've read any post-apocalypse survival stories, you think you know where it's going, and you can probably predict one of the plot pivots. But Simmons is too weird to tell you something familiar. His narrative becomes unmoored from time and place. Elements of fantasy creep in. Striking images appear on the page, unexplained but ominous.Like the best of his work -- much of it collected in the "Furry Trap" anthology -- it gnaws at you. Simmons's art is cartoony but highly detailed, and makes the moments of horror even more disturbing than they might be in something photo-realistic. I do think his short stories work even better, but like them, this refuses to leave my brain alone.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Short, Gory Treat. By A. E. Czysz Terrific post-apocaylptic graphic novel with strong, unique characters and a dark, subtle humor offsetting a horrific and morbid plot. My only complaint is it's length as it can be read in about 20 minutes.

By JanetSimcic As a lover of Shakespeare, I didn't think I would like an abbreviated version. However, it was clear that this was a useful tool for my home schooled grandsons who find Shakespeare unreadable. They loved the graphic arts and the ease of understanding the complicated love affair between Romeo and Juliet. Kudo's~! I hope you do Macbeth next. Followed by a Midsummer Night's Dream.Janet Simcic, Author....The Man at the Caffe' Farnese, An American Chick's Guide to Italy, and The Man at the Rialto Bridge.

By Walter Marks You wouldn't think that a comic book version of the play would do justice to it. But this book does indeed capture the spirit and emotional impact of Romeo and Juliet. It certainly invites young people into Shakespeare's literary world, and encourages them not to be intimidated by the Bard's iambic pentameter verse. It's easy to see this book as the beginning of a series for younger readers, and a valuable teaching tool for teachers.

Well, this book throws a serious curve ball at the old Romeo and Juliet story we all know and love. The hilarious, contemporary spin Wes and Judy Whitmore bring to the story line is refreshing and very entertaining. It's short, fun and lighthearted. Great read for short flight!

It leaves you crazy waiting for the second book to come out. Such an interesting storyline and plot. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is even the slightest interested in science fiction. It has magic, action, and fun! If you haven't bought it yet, what are you waiting for?!

Unique Story, Perfect for the Younger Reader By Azlee Taylor I read this myself on my e-reader first, and liked it so much I bought the paperback version for my stepdaughter, who is 10. This really is a great book for younger readers; the imagination and unique story is captivating, yet isn't too convoluted with difficult verbiage as to be too advanced for someone younger.

Review 'There’s plenty of chills in this thriller about twisted family secrets that will keep pulses pounding.” (Parkersburg News & Sentinel)'This incredibly fast-paced tale is difficult to put down, mostly because the reader gets invested in the characters and won't want to stop until it all plays out.' -4 1/2 star review (RT Book Reviews)'Readers will find this tale of domestic suspense deeply compelling as a once-happy family unit disintegrates and a woman summons her heretofore hidden strength. Told from multiple perspectives, McNeill’s gripping tale explores family, trust, and how lives are rebuilt.' (Booklist)“This powerful debut by a former television anchor is a suspenseful and haunting tale of a marriage spiraling wildly out of control. The story line is particularly unsettling as it mirrors the headlines found in newspapers and court cases everywhere. This title will resonate with readers of contemporary women’s fiction and fans of Gina Holmes.” -starred review (Library Journal)

17 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Riveting psychological thriller, but please note -- this is not a Christian novel By B. Burnham I first heard about Center of Gravity from a discussion on a FB group. Published by Thomas Nelson, it is promoted for the Christian market. There were some comments on the page about the profanity used in the book and if there is ever a reason for it to be included in a Christian novel. Rightly or wrongly, the discussion peaked my interest, and I checked the book out on Amazon. The premise was intriguing and the 4 and 5 star reviews outweighed the 1 stars, so I used an Audible credit and commenced to listening. What I found was a un-put-downable psychological suspense novel. What I didn’t find was a Christian novel.Ava Carson has an idyllic marriage — or so she thinks. Mother to her adopted son Jack, age 8 and her biological son Sam, 16 months, she has a doting and loving husband, a beautiful country club home and a life that seems to good to be true. And that’s because it is. Ava’s husband Mitchell is a sociopath and, when he snaps, he snaps BIG!Center of Gravity is riveting. The unraveling of Ava’s marriage is unnerving and caused me to have knot in the pit of my stomach while listening. Many reviewers say it wasn’t really an enjoyable read, and it wasn’t. But it was very good despite the disturbing twists and turns. Well-written with a good sense of place (Mobile, Alabama), it is told in the first person POVs of Ava, Mitchell, Jack, Ava’s attorney Graham, and court-appointed psychologist Lucy. Lots of POVs to be sure, but it really worked. Everything about this book was good, except . . . this is not a Christian novel. When I pick up a book from a Christian publisher there are a few things I expect — no profanity and a message of hope/redemption even if subtly woven through the narrative. I admit, I like my books with an edginess that is not always found in Christian fiction. I like real people and real problems and the characters don’t have to be Christians. But I do want a message of God’s grace or mercy or sovereignty; something that will point readers to a God bigger and stronger than the circumstances they are facing. Center of Gravity did, indeed, contain profanity. It wasn’t rampant, but it was there. But that’s not my big issue with the book. Ava and Jack were such compelling characters. There could have been so much they could have learned through their struggles if one or two other characters that had relationships with God could have intersected with their lives. The only spiritual event in the novel was when Ava shot up a prayer to “angels” or “a higher being”. Really!? Center of Gravity was a good secular novel. Unfortunately, it could have been an excellent Christian one.Audience: adults.

Even after putting the book down, I could not stop thinking about the story. Throughout my read, when I needed to leave the story to do work, I thought, wondered, worried about our main character and what was going to happen next.I may have a slight emotional interest in this book, as I grew up in a relationship that was similar to this in so many ways. I was only a child, but so much happened and so many times I had to stop things from happening, and took the brunt of the blows, that it is something I relate to very much. As with a lot who have grown up in those situations, I also had similar relationships of my own, until I met my wonderful husband. This ultimately meant that from page one I was hooked. I adored what the author portrayed, as it happens to so many people, men and women. I know that the book may be a trigger for some. There were even times when the story had me looking back on my life and crying, but they were tears of understanding, tears of joy and tears to acknowledge what my past has made me into(which I am lucky was a good turnout). This is a dark book, in many ways, but it is also a very uplifting book, as we watch the main character start to realise her situation and aim to get herself out of it, promptly. I liked the level of detail the author had, as it was really true to such stories. I could feel and relate to all the emotions and thoughts that were running through the main characters head.I found the pace to be really good. We were given time to find out about our main character, see the relationship, learn about its past and what it has evolved into and get a look at the leading male. From there we were thrown into a whirlwind of emotions, thoughts, actions and regretfully, excuses. The whirlwind was easy to keep up with and read, but really portrayed just what it is like in those situations.I found the story really tackled the question ‘why doesn’t she just leave’ very well. Often in these situations the victim finds it hard to leave and many times it is for the exact reasons that the author gave us.Overall, this is a profound and deeply touching book. It takes you on a roller coaster of emotions, from the deepest fear and sorrow all the way to inspiring. I highly recommend this read, especially if you’ve lived in an abusive/controlling relationship. Reading this was gorgeous.

By Claire This had been a really gripping tale about a mad kind of love, the kind of madness that will bring you to the edge of your insanity. Mitchell and his twisted lies, his sick sense of love, his superior regards to himself and abominable attitude towards others.I feel so bad for Ava, for enduring so much pain. She thought she found the man for her. Only to realize in the end that everything about Mitchell was a lie. She endured a lot of pain, she lost her own self-respect and even almost lost her sons. Ava deserved to rise from hell, but how could she even survive when almost everyone in town believed her ex-husband was the decent and truthful one?I've experienced a chock-full of negative emotions while reading this book. I felt anger, fear, contempt, madness and rage, all towards one person - Mitchell Carson. I've never been so disgruntled in a character before, he's so despicable. As for Ava, I felt desperation, agony, distress, misery and a cry for justice. Such a messy life to take! Imagine being accused of incompetent, drunk and unmanageable.Perhaps, the most painful emotion I felt was whenever I read little Jack's point of view. Eight-year old Jack who thought he was his own superhero, that everything he did was what Daredevil, Thor, Spiderman and even Wolverine would have done. The kids, Jack and baby Sam, were the ones affected greatly in this dysfunctional family and I couldn't help but shed a few tears for them.Laura McNeill was able to deliver a story that will really tear you to pieces. She slowly drew me in to Jack's world, pulled me right into Ava's consciousness and delivered me away from Mitchell. Center of Gravity is a powerful story that will leave you hanging by a thread of hope and hoping for a sliver of truth. Truly an intense read!

La fortune des Rougon (French Edition), by Emile Zola

About the Author ?mile Zola was a French writer who is recognized as an exemplar of literary naturalism and for his contributions to the development of theatrical naturalism. Zola s best-known literary works include the twenty-volume Les Rougon-Macquart, an epic work that examined the influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution on French society through the experiences of two families, the Rougons and the Macquarts. Other remarkable works by Zola include Contes ? Ninon, Les Myst?res de Marseille, and Th?r?se Raquin.

In addition to his literary contributions, Zola played a key role in the Dreyfus Affair of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His newspaper article J Accuse accused the highest levels of the French military and government of obstruction of justice and anti-semitism, for which he was convicted of libel in 1898. After a brief period of exile in England, Zola returned to France where he died in 1902. ?mile Zola is buried in the Panth?on alongside other esteemed literary figures Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas.

It reads as quickly as any current novel on the best sellers' list, yet it contains all the elements we love about Zola, particularly his unique way of making social commentary the focal point of his novels. If you've never read Zola, I would recommend this book as your introduction into his world.

Read one of two of the "masterpieces" first to get an idea of the man's true worth. Then come back to this book. Its main interest is as a "who's who" of Zola's characters, a family tree, a quick refresher when you read later novels in the Rougon-Macquart cycle. Compared to the later works, it seems to be written too much to a formula. Very much a "warm-up" exercise for the author's social and historical project. Chapters and descriptions are far too long and the effect of environment on human character - a favourite theme of the naturalists - is often unclear. The shallowness of those who seize political power is fairly well portrayed, though less skillfully than in Zola's later offerings. His main themes are all here but in embryonic form. He's groping his way. Fortunately, he didn't give up and battled on until he hit the jackpot with lucky number seven. Frankly, the book is only for hardened Zola nuts, who know where the man's heading. But it was intended to be an introduction to a cycle, and if you read it on those terms it's just about OK. A sort of boot camp. The Z-boy does show some promise here, and there's already a big improvement in book number two. So grit your teeth and stick with it.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A thriller with depth By Karl Janssen In this book, Zola dives headlong into his fascination with "the human beast" by examining the psychology of murder. The novel is also a detailed portrait of the lives of railroad workers. The main character is Jacques Lantier, son of Gervaise Macquart (of L'Assomoir), a railroad engineer who works the line between Paris and Le Havre. Jacques feels a nagging compulsion to kill every woman he's attracted to. Fortunately, up to this point he has been able to control himself, but who knows how long he will be able to restrain the killer inside? Jacques is not the only character with murder on his mind; in fact, everyone in the book seems to be plotting to kill someone. Murder for love, murder for greed, murder for revenge are all represented. Zola has crammed so much violence and suspense into the plot, that on the surface he's written a fabulous piece of pulp fiction. Though the book pushes the boundaries of believability, it's also a fascinating study of human nature. The reader gains a window into the minds of the characters that reminds one of Poe's best tales. Underlying the criminal plot threads is a deeper level of social commentary, scientific inquiry, and philosophical debate. Zola shows how the rise of industrial technology contributes to the moral degeneration and dehumanization of the populace. He portrays Jacques' relationship with his engine as a symbiotic, almost romantic relationship. Meanwhile Jacques' Aunt Phasie and her family operate a crossing/switching station in the middle of nowhere, where their only interaction with the outside world comes in split-second views of nameless passengers being carted off to unknown destinations. While the railroad provides speed and convenience, it also generates social isolation and anonymity. Fans of Zola or readers of classical literature in general will certainly enjoy this book. Even fans of contemporary suspense fiction should find it entertaining and thought-provoking.
