Manga Mania Chibi and Furry Characters: How to Draw the Adorable Mini-Characters and Cool Cat-Girls of Manga, by Christopher Hart

From School Library Journal Grade 5 Up For those not familiar with chibi, this is an exaggerated form of manga illustration that squashes the big-eyed characters down for a greater intensity of cuteness. Hart does an excellent job of introducing the concept and of explaining how the drawing technique for this particular style varies from normal manga, and why. Also included are a further exaggerated and simplified form of characters often used for making asides and a section devoted to drawing characters that are varying degrees of feline and human mix. Creative examples are given for all categories, with much potential for sparking the imagination. This volume is a good supplement to more basic manga drawing books that may be in most collections. By Charsya Paul Chistopher Hart has truly out done himself with this book,as well as his other book fantasy worlds. In this book, Hart gives you examples of teaching you how to draw chibi characters as well as telling you what makes a chibi a chibi. A great thing about this book is that they have a large section of how to draw a variety of cat girls!!! That was my most favorite part! I really enjoyed this book alot, and as a bonus I will give you the run down of what to expect in the book....Chibi basicsWhat makes a chibi a chibi? The chibi headDrawing the chibi head step by stepFull figures: Standard manag versus chibiTurn any character into a chibiPersonality pointersThe chibi size size chartDrawing the chibi face and body step by stepfull body viewsChibi characters and costumesCostumesMischevious chibis!Making eye contactGirl costumes and popular japanese rolesStupid chibis!Regular chibis versus super small chibisSuper small chibisFantasy chibis: Angels, fairies, and princessesChibi Expressions, emotions, and attitudesEmotionsbody language with special effectsMagical effectsChibi cat girls and furry charactersFurry-style earsChibi cat-girls:full figuresBoxing catsChibi cat girl typesIn-space adventuresStandard-size cat girlsStandard-size cat girls: the basicsDrawing the cat-girls head step by stepDrawing the cat-girl versus human headdrawing cat-girl bodies step by stepFrom tame to wildCat-girl hand and foot markingsCat-girl prsonalitiesCat-girl posesCat-girl scenesForeshorteningA world of cat girls!Chibi and magical creaturesStandard monsters versus chibi monstersCreating chibi monsters from basic shapesCreating chibi monsters from inanimate objectsPterodactyl chibi monstersChibi monsters with magical powersMagicalchibis without ownersSuper stylized chibisLittle ladySuper stylized chibi boySuper stylized chibi cat girlSuper stylized chibi rabbit girlChibi trouble makerWitch in trainingLittle angelWishing on a starCandy girlSerious studentChibi hero fighterTropical girlThe rest of the pictures are basically sample images showing you that you can use a chibi in certain scenes of regular sized characters, like when they are emabarrassed or mad. The chibi form of that person shows great expression, as well as hillarity. Plus chibis are ultra cute! This book is a perfect add on to any how to draw collection. I definitely recommend this book to any artist, whether beginner or intermediate, this book is extremely helpful. A must buy!

I could draw everything, and it came out near perfection. My friends loved, I loved, and heck, my GRANDFATHER loved it! He thought it was really, really good, in terms of teaching you how to draw! I loved it, and recommend it to everyone! The book shows you step by step how to draw cat-girls (beautiful) and cute tropical girl/chibi/cat-girl and other adorable creatures. It teaches you when to use super-deformed characters, and uses cute drawings (eg, questionable little angel (my fave!) to enable you to use different, effective techniques! This is chock-full of great things!

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Chibi-fied By J. Sherman Christopher Hart's "Manga Mania" series continues with a how-to on creating supe-deformed characters, anthromorphic catgirls and furry characters. While Hart covers the creation chibis from the ground up, some experience with figure drawing is recommended for the catgirl section. And some of Hart's sample drawings, while unexpectedly good, don't exactly meet fanboy standards. But if you want to draw super-cute characters like the pros do, that's what this book--and practice--is for. This book contains no offensive content.

The Prodigy is Norman Weissman’s hilarious portrayal of a young runaway whose sojurn across America pits youthful innocence against the vagaries of people, regions and beliefs in a bygone era before the second World War. This is an allegory. A secular Pilgrim’s Progress that pays subtle homage to Mark Twain and John Steinbeck and reveals unexpected truths from encounters with improbable characters and events that will keep you guessing about who is being parodied. The Prodigy traverses a landscape reflecting the generosity and greed, openness and prejudice, love and hatred that defines the richness of our American experience.

The infinite possibilities of renewal By Norman Weissman "Youthful restlessness is the Prodigy's theme dramatized by clever, satirical and iconic characters who entertain and hold your interest to the final page. Wonder and laughter are evoked by his many challenging adventures as he learns to live, love and be happy in world greater and more complex than the limited confines of a Prodigy's disciplined life. Abandoning his brilliant musical career, he roller skates across America experiencing all the pains and fears and anguish of growing up in a sometimes cruel and heart-breaking world. A "good read" the touches the human heart in an experience that stays with you long afteryou put down the book".Professor Jack Werblow PhDUniversity of New haven

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Stirring Journey By myles gansfried A stirring journey of discovery is taken by the reader of Norman Weissman's latest novel. In the tradition of the great life adventures, The Prodigy is a mid-20th century Huckleberry Fin. Just as Huckleberry is drawn by the currents of the Mississippi River, so too, the teenage runaway, Berl, is propelled by the caprices of his journey across the United States. At the outset he is completely naïve about life. One encounter after another leads to ostensibly puzzling experiences until a chain events propels him to a final understanding of life. Brilliantly written, The Prodigy is a sweeping lesson in history and morality that rivets the reader until the very last page is turned.

4 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Washington:The archetype of personality structure and traits required of president of the U.S.A. By Richard Dicanio The state of American affairs being what they are today leads one to now consider carefully a leader they can count on for not only sensible leadership but coherent, intelligent and just representation of our core principles which I would hope to still be those of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. One must possess patience and virtue beyond reproach and whose feet must be firmly planted in the constitution for the betterment of the perception and representation of the United States both here at home and around the world. As a concerned citizen and as an American, our current choices appear dismally lacking and I fear that in the coming years will lead to the continued downfall of our country to a condition that would be extremely hard to rectify or reverse. We elect our president based on the strength of the advertising firm thus representing him or her, our choice is not left to the content of character or loyalty to the principles set forth by the fathers of the republic.Accomplishments that are seen and palpated through acts and success should decide, not merely fancy slogans, balloons and devices that amuse. One candidate will inevitably have more devices to amuse.Unfortunately, they usually get our vote. Then comes the hard part, running the country for four years. And what of it?Good or bad we tolerate this like children and do nothing to better the situation, our country and ultimately ourselves. We as a people need to familiarize ourselves with what constitutes greatness in a leader. The requisite traits needed to lead.We need to look beyond our elementary school contacts and acquaint ourselves with a man who unfortunately we view today as just another excuse for a day off. That man was George Washington. Jared Sparks, a past Harvard president, educator and historian who is credited with starting the study of American history as a subject put together a concise history of Washington that when read to its conclusion leaves one in awe.It is considered his best work and he had Washingtons actual papers for years as references.George Washington is what we should all aspire to be. His life, written in a manner of the times, merely thirty to forty years after his death in 1799, is astounding. His principles and firm convictions, his trials and constant pursuit of his means to an end are clearly evident. He was 'the man' of the and for the people of his newly forming country. His leadership skills are what is needed now more than ever.We need to find, secure and elect a man like this. The book is beautifully written for a history of the United States and of the man and should be read by everyone interested in the future of our nation.Washington is the model, the template by which our leaders should be chosen. Sparks has written a classic narrative of our beginnings as a nation and of his as a leader. It evolves and enmeshes both into a wonderful study of American history from its first seedling to the beginings of the runaway train it has become and a government that has lost sight of its original purpose, that is, to serve the people and function for their and their countries benefit.I fear that this is now past into history as well. Read the book slowly, injest it.See the man for who he was and then say that this is who you wouldn't want running things today. He was one of a kind and perhaps there will never be another George Washington but at least you will come away with a better conception of what kind of leader America needs presently. The United States of America needs a George Washington type of person to lead us.His traits as presented in the book evidenced over and over should be a prerequisite to the office of president. This book will be all you need as a citizen to make an informed decision as to the character of our next and future leaders. To quote Washingtons dying words, "Tis Well".Tis well you read this book at least once in your American life. It will be time well spent.Trust me.Just stick with it and you will see the man grow with both triumphs and defeats which only made him stronger with more resolve to finish what he started at the request of his countrymen. A task he really did not want at all but felt compelled to do because of his love for his country and its people. If you have any doubts, just compare our current George to the old George. You'll see what I mean.

Disposable Fiction is meant to be exactly that. Disposable. These stories were created to be short fiction that you read on the bus or the subway on your way to school or work. Once finished, you may toss the book out but the stories will stick with you deep down in those hard to reach spots. Disposable Fiction is a one-shot anthology of 15 self contained stories ranging from five to twenty pages each. The series is a culmination of work from one writer and seventeen artists rich in talent and four creative letterers.  Many people hail from the other ends of the world including Italy, Bosnia, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Brazil, Scotland, Spain, Indonesia, and the US. The material of each story is quite different. In one story, a priest doses his congregation with LSD before a sermon. In another, a schizophrenic homeless man is driven to save a young boy in peril. There's a story where a gay man and a bachlorette move in together once the government passes a law that states that all single people must be married to someone of the opposite sex by the age of thirty. In another story, a forest nymph becomes human and takes over the corporation that is poisoning her forest. There's also an action tale about a race across town to get into a secret spy organization.

India Reloaded: Inside India's Resurgent Consumer Market, by Sinha

Review 'Dheeraj brings alive a new India, one that wants to live every moment as a spectacle. Contrary to the assumptions, India's mass consumers want the latest in technology and life, and are eager to upgrade to new experiences. To woo this India, brands need to have a swagger themselves. India Reloaded cuts through the cliches around emerging markets - it's a refreshing take.' -Frederique Covington-Corbett, Director, International Marketing, Twitter 'India's consumption landscape is complex and challenging. One half of consumers are still enjoying the democratisation of access that many brands brought in 20 years ago, while another half is dealing with the after effects of it. Western management thinking often attempts to break up the challenge into parts, into neat compartments to be addressed independently. This makes India look even more difficult market than it is. This book boldly attempts to bring it all together, to see it through an Indian lens, to see the one-ness in it. Practising marketing managers will find this refreshing and I suspect, rather useful.' -Dev Amritesh, President & Chief Operating Officer, Dunkin' Donuts, India 'India's diversity often conceals its underlying unity. Dheeraj unpeels the layers to reveal several unifying truths about India's consumers than its diversity suggests; truths that can make the difference between success and failure for marketers. This book needs to be on every brand manager's desk.' -Ranjan Kapur, Country Manager, WPP India 'Segmentation discussions can get overly data based. In India Reloaded Dheeraj has segmented India without jargon, providing insights on attitudes and aspirations using illustrations from films and music. Read it for an understanding of consumer India.' -Rajesh Jejurikar, President and Chief Executive, Farm Equipment and Two Wheelers, Mahindra & Mahindra 'What can popular culture teach us about business? Everything. Dheeraj makes connections between seemingly disparate socio-cultural and political behaviour of India to explain its consumption culture. This is a 'must-have' for successful businesses - the cultural compass of new India.' -Nirvik Singh, Chairman & CEO, Asia Pacific, Grey Group 'A fascinating journey into the soul of India. Sinha's original analysis of India's consumer society will inspire innovative thinking in the boardrooms, as well as in the classrooms that are preparing future executives. A compelling and engaging read that uncovers the new reality of a fast-changing nation." -Glyn Atwal, Burgundy School of Business, France

About the Author Dheeraj heads planning for Grey (WPP Group) in India, South & South East Asia. He is the author of Consumer India: Inside the Indian Mind and Wallet - a recommended read at the Wharton School's course on emerging economies. He has spoken at the Harvard Business School, the Asian Marketing Effectiveness Festival, the CII Marketing Conference and the Global Youth Marketing Forum. Dheeraj has won several marketing effectiveness awards - Jay Chiat, AME, APAC Effies and Yahoo Big Idea Chair. He has twice been the winner of Atticus, WPP's award for best published thinking. His strategy experience spans categories and markets in Asia, including Maybank, Sensodyne, Reliance Mobile, Colgate, MasterCard, LG, DBS Bank, Tata AIA, Virgin Mobile, Max Bupa, Fiat, Reckitt Benckiser and Emirates.

Having visited India yearly (sometimes more than 1x a year) for about forty years,I assumed I was close to understanding the market and pulse, this book proved that I wasn't as close as I thought. Great insights here into how to view the market, what consumers value, how the "lower classes" look for aspiration and not just cheap products. Highly recommend this book for anyone considering or currently tackling consumers in India.

Superbly insightful for marketing in India By Amazon Customer There is no dearth of books and articles talking about business in India, some of them being excellent. I would put India Reloaded in the top box when it comes to a point of view on Indian consumers and its impact on business and marketing. Dheeraj has weaved together stories, observations and analysis in a remarkable manner to provide a clear understanding that breaks several myths and answers a lot of serious questions any marketer faces while dealing with India. I found it difficult to put down the book from the very first page. It is filled with examples and a provoking read.

Insightful By Anir India Reloaded looks at India consumer through a kaleidoscope of cultural nuances, value systems, popular culture. The book lays out clear, actionable insights for brands and marketeers as Dheeraj does the heavy lifting of peeling complex layers and providing a clear route map for brands (multinational or local) to be successful in the Indian market place. India Reloaded has been a joy to read and learn.

If you have trouble with mystical themes this is not the book for you. If you are on a spiritual quest and seeking esoteric answers this book could help fill a void and light a path far less traveled. It's answers are only hinted at and couched in obscure prose at times but if you can accept reincarnation and twin souls this book can be an enlightening and uplifting experience opening you to new trains of thought. For those that like the tried and true and their stories cut and dried this will anger and frustrate you leave it alone. For the mystical dreamer, the spiritual seeker with the heart of a romantic idealist, this is the book you've been looking for. This is not a book for a religious person but an old soul trying to remember it's way back home. It can truely change your life if your a soul in search of answers. Marie Corelli was a true mystic and a visionary psychic she foresaw TV, Atomic Power and X-rays all before their discovery and was a very victorian lady not a scientist but she is an aquired taste. It is a ray of light in a cruel, harsh world. I would recommend this book to any esoterically minded individual with an open mind and willing spirit. ........If you like this title try " Ardath" and " A Romance of Two Worlds " by the same author. Happy Reading!

For the Sincere Seeker of Truth By Judith This, along with 'Brothers of the Third Degree', 'Teachings of the Masters from the Far East', 'Dweller on Two Planets' and 'Prince of the House of David', present the earnest sincere seeker of the Light with the true laws of Life through these wonderful writings. This book presents a fascinating, challenging ideal about relationships and their purpose on the spiritual path. Exciting, intriguing, illuminating --- seekers keep it in their 'collection' and read it over and over for more illumination. Love it, love it, love it!

By Queen of Cups Regarded by Corelli as a continuation of her "Romance of Two Worlds," she extends her occult theories and throws elements of science fiction into the midst. For example, she poses occult theories on electricity and radioactivity. Corelli had her own ideas and did not adhere to any popular or fantastical religious fad of her time. Reading her is definitely a bizarre and imaginative adventure.

The true story behind the strangest phenomena in history!

"During my long investigation of these strange objects, I have seen many reports verified by Air Force Intelligence, detailed accounts by Air Force pilots, radar operators, and other trained observers proving the UFOs are high-speed craft superior to anything built on Earth."

In a personal, no-nonsense style, Major Donald Keyhoe in “The Flying Saucers Are Real” provides the details of his investigation: he talks with the witnesses, reviews the history of the phenomenon, and attempts to pry open the secrecy lid the Air Force had clamped down on the subject of UFOs.

Well known in the UFO community as an author and as the director of NICAP, Major Donald Keyhoe was a Marine pilot and established author well before the flying saucer craze of the late 1940s. He authored several books on unidentified flying objects, including the classic Flying Saucers Are Real.

When the first "flying saucer" sightings were reported in June,1947, Keyhoe, an experienced pilot, was skeptical. True asked him to investigate UFOs in 1949. He interviewed numerous pilots as well as military officers in the Pentagon. Keyhoe discovered that expert observers had seen the unexplained discs, many at close range. His article "Flying Saucers Are Real" in the January,1950 issue of True became one of the most widely read and discussed articles in publishing history, and caused a sensation. In January, 1950, the article was expanded into a paperback book. In 1957, Keyhoe became Director of the newly formed National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) in Washington, DC. Under Keyhoe's leadership NICAP gave serious publicity to the UFO phenomena throughout the 1960s and encouraged subsequent Congressional hearings.

The Book Is Great - But Do Not Buy This Print On Demand Version Of It, As Information Is Missing Or Garbled from the Original By Arlene Spencer My rating, here, does NOT apply to the book as originally published. If you're interested in a journalist's experience working a subject he thought he'd wind up finding a farce and laughing off - only to discover he could not debunk it the further he investigated, then this is a book for you. Keyhoe never attempts to assert what the 1940's - 1950 "flying saucers" were. In fact, he works very hard to logically determine what they could not, must not be. The story is fun and fascinating. My poor rating is to WARN that I do not recommend anyone buy this version of this book. I bought this and received a Print on Demand (P.O.D.) version (as expected), but in which some information is simply gone or so badly garbled it cannot be understood. There are so many obvious spelling, copying, or spacing errors (and errors exist so frequently in any few consecutive pages, or so) that they actually became distracting from my train of thought as I read. The layout is one long uniform word process document. The book’s original content’s formatting is omitted. In this print on demand version: quoted published material and titles are not set off; the actual book’s original pagination is not used; citations are not placed on the actual cited page in this version; spacing (e.g. between sentences or paragraphs) is not reproduced at all as it was in the original book, and is even sometimes added for no reason; and finally brackets are used frequently without having any purpose (for example, “[p. 71]” in the P.O.D. version would seem to indicate a reference to “page 71” but it (and other such bracketed numbers) do not correspond in either the P.O.D. version to anything, nor to the original printing’s equivalent page numbers – I checked).Even though a customer bought this product, it seems no one proof read or checked this print on demand version for quality, comparing it to the original book it is supposed to reproduce. What I received really should be returned to Amazon for a full refund, except I wrote in it. That’s my fault.I have purchased other print on demand books. They’ve been fine. This one is exceptional in how poorly it is executed. I wish I knew before I blew the money on it. So, I am writing this review of this product. If you want the information Keyhoe wrote in his version of his book, then be warned. What I received is not a copy, as it is neither clear nor complete.

The Truth is Elsewhere By Amazon Customer This is one of those truly awful and unprofessional printing jobs, probably the worst of which I've ever seen. The formatting is rubbish and there are probably about one hundred typographical errors all throughout. While it's not difficult to correct them in your head, they are often impossibly stupid little mistakes which I found rather distracting. In fact, I thought them so incessant and frustrating that I am now writing a review online...Regarding the actual content, I suggest instead reading a much more comprehensive and well-written book on the subject: The Report on Unidentified Flying Saucers by Edward Ruppelt (Cosimo Classics edition).

By identifying the structure of DNA, the molecule of life, Francis Crick and James Watson revolutionized biochemistry and won themselves a Nobel Prize. At the time, Watson was only twenty-four, a brilliant young zoologist hungry to make his mark. His uncompromisingly honest account of the heady days of their thrilling sprint against other world-class researchers to solve one of science’s greatest unsolved mysteries gives a dazzlingly clear picture of a world of brilliant scientists with great gifts, very human ambitions, and bitter rivalries.

With humility unspoiled by false modesty, Watson relates his and Crick’s desperate efforts to beat Linus Pauling to the Holy Grail of the life sciences, the identification of the basic building block of life. He is impressed by the achievements of the young man he was, but clear-eyed about his limitations. Never has such a brilliant scientist also been so gifted, and so truthful, in capturing in words the flavor of his work.

“He has described admirably how it feels to have that frightening and beautiful experience of making a great scientific discovery.” ―Richard Feynman

“Like nothing else in literature, it gives one the feel of how creative science really happens.” ―C. P. Snow

The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA, by James D. Watson

Amazon.com Review "Science seldom proceeds in the straightforward logical manner imagined by outsiders," writes James Watson in The Double Helix, his account of his codiscovery (along with Francis Crick) of the structure of DNA. Watson and Crick won Nobel Prizes for their work, and their names are memorized by biology students around the world. But as in all of history, the real story behind the deceptively simple outcome was messy, intense, and sometimes truly hilarious. To preserve the "real" story for the world, James Watson attempted to record his first impressions as soon after the events of 1951-1953 as possible, with all their unpleasant realities and "spirit of adventure" intact.

Watson holds nothing back when revealing the petty sniping and backbiting among his colleagues, while acknowledging that he himself was a willing participant in the melodrama. In particular, Watson reveals his mixed feelings about his famous colleague in discovery, Francis Crick, who many thought of as an arrogant man who talked too much, and whose brilliance was appreciated by few. This is the joy of The Double Helix--instead of a chronicle of stainless-steel heroes toiling away in their sparkling labs, Watson's chronicle gives readers an idea of what living science is like, warts and all. The Double Helix is a startling window into the scientific method, full of insight and wit, and packed with the kind of science anecdotes that are told and retold in the halls of universities and laboratories everywhere. It's the stuff of legends. --Therese Littleton

A Geneticist Looks at the Double Helix By Frederick Hecht _________________________________________________________________When "The Double Helix" came out in 1968, as a geneticist I naturally read it. And it has stuck far more firmly for me than any of the many other books I've read over the years about genetics. Why do I remember this book so well? I've wondered. The answer is right in the first sentence of "The Double Helix" that reads: "I have never seen Francis Crick in a modest mood."In his account of how the structure of DNA was discovered, Jim Watson doesn't try to tell the story from a disinterested point of view. This is my version, he says, and I'm not going to touch it up to cover the warts and other blemishes. Yes, for instance, Watson and Crick were patently and terribly unfair and unjust toward Rosalind Franklin but Jim doesn't deny it. He makes it plenty clear. Most writing in and about science is well varnished. But varnish gives a gloss and it's not easy to hold onto. Jim Watson forgot the varnish, on purpose. Watson's brashness (and Crick's conceit) season this narrative in a memorable way, a way I can't easily forget, even if I wanted to.This is first-rate personal science writing. Five stars, for sure, or more. It's about one of the most important discoveries in the history of science. I hope you'll enjoy (and remember) "The Double Helix" too.

"Honest Jim's" Version of a Major Scientific Event (SEE ADDENDUM BELOW) By STEPHEN PLETKO XXXXXIn this book (first published in 1968), "Honest Jim" (as a scientist friend called him) or Dr. James Dewey Watson has explained his "version of how the structure of DNA was discovered" and "this account represents the way [he] saw things then, in [the fall of] 1951 [to the spring of] 1953." (The discovery was announced in April 1953.) That is, he has "attempted to re-create [his] first impressions of the relevant events and personalities" that he encountered along the way to making the discovery. Thus, understand this is not a book of historical facts. Also, because of the personal nature of this book Watson states that "many of the comments [that he makes] may seem one-sided and unfair, but this is often the case in the incomplete and hurried way in which human beings decide to like or dislike a new idea or [a new] acquaintance."This book revolves around five main people:(1) Dr. Francis Crick (1916 to 2004) of the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, England(2) Dr. James Watson (born 1928) also of the Cavendish Laboratory(3) Dr. Rosalind Franklin (1920 to 1958) of King's College, a division of the University of London(4) Dr. Maurice Wilkins (1916 to 2004) also of King's College(5) Dr. Linus Pauling (1901 to 1994) of the California Institute of Technology. However, along the way the reader meets many other people, both scientists and non-scientists.As Watson explains, the above five people are in a "race" to discover DNA's structure. However, I got the impression that neither Franklin nor Wilkins knew they were in a race. By the end of the race, Watson was "one of the winners" who shared the Nobel Prize in 1962 with Crick and Wilkins.According to the official Nobel Prize internet site, Watson, Crick, and Wilkins won a shared Nobel Prize in physiology "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material."This 29-chapter (with epilogue) book is a fast read (but only if you gloss over the science parts). As Watson proceeds in this story, you'll find that he is quite sociable and takes us to such places as pubs, restaurants, and "smashing" parties. As you read this book, you'll find that there is considerable tension between Watson and Franklin (who was an expert in X-ray diffraction crystallography) as well as between Wilkins and Franklin. For me, this book imparts four major things:(1) THE THRILL OF DISCOVERY. That is, this book effectively conveys, especially in the latter chapters, the struggle to find the correct answer. With each chapter, the anticipation mounts toward the final climax: the discovery of the double helical structure of DNA.(2) HOW SCIENCE IS DONE. For example, both Watson & Crick and Pauling used molecular models while Franklin & Wilkins used X-ray crystallography. However, all science is not done as it is conveyed in this book. As Watson states, "styles of scientific research vary almost as much as human personalities."(3) THE QUESTION OF ETHICS IN SCIENCE. For example, Wilkins told Watson secretly that Franklin "had evidence for a new three-dimensional form of DNA." When Watson "asked what the pattern [of this new form] was like, [Wilkins] went into the adjacent room to pick up an [X-ray diffraction] print [or photograph] of [this] new form [called the 'B' form]" and showed it to Watson. This was done without Franklin's permission. It turns out that this X-ray photo was critical and "gave several...vital helical parameters."(4) WATSON'S HONESTY. In all of this book, Franklin is portrayed as an unattractive, unapproachable, and angry person whose scientific work is questionable. However, in the book's epilogue Watson devotes the last two paragraphs to her and her achievements. He admits that "my initial impressions of her, both scientific and personal...were often wrong" and that she was a person of "personal honesty and generosity" as well as of "intelligence."Two good features of this book are that it has photographs (a total of 19) and diagrams (a total of 11) throughout. My favorite photo is the one captioned "X-ray diffraction photograph of DNA, B form" taken by Franklin in late 1952. My favorite diagram is captioned "Schematic illustration of the double helix."This book was written for a general audience so they could experience the thrill of this revolutionary discovery. Thus, I was surprised that it had no chapter table of contents (but the photos and diagrams each have one), no chapter headings, and no index. I feel these would have made the book more user friendly. Also, I feel what was needed was a science glossary and name index/page. The former is needed because the reader encounters many scientific terms (especially those related to DNA) and thus a glossary would make the science more accessible to the general reader. The latter is needed because Watson encounters many people and a name index/page would have helped the reader keep track of these names. Besides Watson talked with other scientists to clarify ideas, and in a way they indirectly contributed to the discovery. Thus, a name index/page would have acknowledged their indirect contribution. Finally, in the epilogue Watson states, "All of [the major] people [in this book], should they desire, can indicate events and details they remember differently." Thus, I recommend these books:(1) "Linus Pauling: Scientist and Peacemaker" (2001). In this book, refer to the science article entitled "The Triple Helix" which describes the race to discover DNA's structure. Note Pauling's observations throughout the article.(2) "Rosalind Franklin and DNA" (first published in 1975) by Anne Sayre. This book clears up Watson's misconceptions about Franklin who died in 1958.(3) "The Third Man of the Double Helix" (2003) by Maurice Wilkins. Wilkins finally speaks out on what really happened from his perspective. In conclusion, Dr. James Watson tells us honestly his version of how the structure of DNA was discovered. He effectively conveys the struggle to find the right answer and the thrill of discovery. Don't deny yourself from reading this exciting book but be sure to read the recommended books to get the full story.*** 1/2***** ADDENDUM: April 23, 2013 regarding "The Annotated and Illustrated" edition of "The Double Helix" (published in 2012) *****All the problems I noted above for the above original 1968 edition of this book have been corrected with the new 2012 edition.Instead of simply listing the names of the numerous other people involved in the discovery (as I suggested in my review for the original edition), there are actual photographs of them. Other photographs (many published for the first time) are also included. Many other documents not included in the original edition have also been included in this one. There are wonderful annotations (explanatory notes) in boldface type on each page of the new edition. One annotation I found especially interesting was an explanation of where the nickname "Rosy" or "Rosie" came from.Included is James Watson's account of winning the Nobel Prize (first published in 2007).There are also five appendices. Included in these appendices are reproduced letters written by Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins of why they DID NOT want Watson to publish his book.Lastly, there is a good index. (The 1968 edition did not have an index.)Finally, I want to stress that Watson's original 1968 text is left UNCHANGED.In conclusion, in my opinion the 2012 edition of Watson's 1968 book will provide the potential reader with a more fuller reading experience with regard to this major scientific event. Also, in my opinion, the 2012 EDITION DESERVES 5 STARS.XXXXX

By Manola Sommerfeld I read this book for the first time when i took undergraduate biochemistry in college. I could not put it down. Now, ten years later, i found it at a second-hand store and re-read it, and once again read it in two sittings. This book reads like a thriller. You definitively catch a sense of the urgency of their research. I was flipping pages nervously, like i didn't know Watson and Crick were the ones who won the race.In the edition i have, Watson is very thankful about the contributions that Rosalind Franklin made to their discovery. He is crystal clear about how she was the one convinced that the backbone was on the outside, and had not he followed her advice, it would have taken him even longer to figure out the structure, and who knows?, Pauling might have gotten there first. In the epilogue, Watson is all praise about Rosalind, acknowledges how his opinions about her were often wrong, how excellent the quality of her work was, and ponders about the obstacles that she encountered in her career in science for being a woman.I wonder if these comments were missing in other people's books, because according to their critiques, one comes out with the idea that Watson and the male-dominated scientific establishment gave Rosalind the cancer that killed her. This is an excellent, honest account of an event that took place when the author was 25 years old. I could not believe my eyes when i read that sentence. Twenty-five, worrying about girls and tennis and the structure of the most important molecule in the universe. These facts might count for something. This is a must-read book, for everybody, whether you understand science or not.

He whom they called the Tavern Knight laughed an evil laugh—such a laugh as might fall from the lips of Satan in a sardonic moment. He sat within the halo of yellow light shed by two tallow candles, whose sconces were two empty bottles, and contemptuously he eyed the youth in black, standing with white face and quivering lip in a corner of the mean chamber. Then he laughed again, and in a hoarse voice, sorely suggestive of the bottle, he broke into song. He lay back in his chair, his long, spare legs outstretched, his spurs jingling to the lilt of his ditty whose burden ran: On the lip so red of the wench that's sped His passionate kiss burns, still-O! For 'tis April time, and of love and wine Youth's way is to take its fill-O! Down, down, derry-do! So his cup he drains and he shakes his reins, And rides his rake-helly way-O! She was sweet to woo and most comely, too, But that was all yesterday-O! Down, down, derry-do! The lad started forward with something akin to a shiver. "Have done," he cried, in a voice of loathing, "or, if croak you must, choose a ditty less foul!"

Flawed second novel By Flash Sheridan Set during the English Civil War, this novel lacks the craftsmanship of both Sabatini's first novel and of his mature works. The setup (treachery, revenge, and an unsurprising surprise revelation) has the potential for classic Sabatini treatment, but from that point on the plot collapses. The main dramatic interest from that point on is how Sabatini will get himself out of the corner he's painted himself into. Minor spoiler warning: He doesn't. The ending, driven by coincidence (as is not uncommon in Sabatini) fails to satisfy the reader, and is completely unsatisfactory by Sabatini's later standards.

Rafael Sabatini has written better books but I can find no fault with this one.If you're already familiar with Sabatini - just read it. If you are not, I'd recommend reading one of his more popular books such as 'Scaramouche' first.

A Rollicking Adventure By Rhonda Carroll This is a story about a man's quest for vengeance against two wealthy, snobbish, upper class individuals who'd caused him grief and anguish many years ago. But, when his "best laid plans" went awry, he found himself in one predicament after another as he tried to rectify the mistakes and mishaps that occurred each time he altered his plans. The swashbuckling scenes were vivid and exciting but not overdone. The romance was touching. The main character's wit and wisdom showed that even ruffians and scoundrels can have honor. A great read - in easily understandable English.

Stark I've not found another book comparable to this most excellent volume on the person and work of Christ. Ambrose develops his theme from the text of Scripture and opens up new vistas concerning the beauties of Christ. Whatever your denominational background, you'll find here no petty fighting over words or harsh polemics, only the sweet bread of life opened for hungry souls. Do you suppose you already know a lot about the Lord Jesus Christ? Read this book and realize you've only begun to appreciate the glories of the Savior. This book is medicine for the heart of every weary believer, and light for the path of every struggling pilgrim. Isaac Ambrose not only shows the way to the City of God, he leads you in it's streets and introduces you to its loving Sovereign.

Here is what trhe author says in the book as he quotes Augustine: The most excellent subject to discourse or write of is JESUS CHRIST. Augustine, having read Cicero's works, commended them for their eloquence: but he passed this sentence upon them, "They are not sweet, because the name of Jesus is not in them."Enough said.

It's a enduring work of Christian Beauty.I have a friend who has been through a lot recently - close to death several times - loss of loved ones also. He has told me several times how this book has been an incredible help to him. Especially for wisdom and counsel in suffering.

There is an underlying assumption in the social sciences that consciousness and social life are ultimately classical physical/material phenomena. In this ground-breaking book, Alexander Wendt challenges this assumption by proposing that consciousness is, in fact, a macroscopic quantum mechanical phenomenon. In the first half of the book, Wendt justifies the insertion of quantum theory into social scientific debates, introduces social scientists to quantum theory and the philosophical controversy about its interpretation, and then defends the quantum consciousness hypothesis against the orthodox, classical approach to the mind-body problem. In the second half, he develops the implications of this metaphysical perspective for the nature of language and the agent-structure problem in social ontology. Wendt's argument is a revolutionary development which raises fundamental questions about the nature of social life and the work of those who study it.

A must read for those interested in consciousness theory By Gregory Allen Romines Alexnder Wendt has written a book that is informative, insightful and expertly researched. While the title references social science, you might well consider this book an overview of the recent research into the quantum basis of consciousness. If you are interested in the implications of the Hammeroff/Penrose Orch-OR theory, this is a great place to start. The author takes care to present various interpretations of consciousness theory (both quantum and classical), and provides excellent historical context for these interpretations. This book will allow you to become more comfortable with the expanded world view that accompanies an understanding of the physical basis for consciousness without imposing unsupported speculation that often tries to drift into this picture.Bottom line, worth every penny of your money and every minute of your time. Thank you, Mr. Wendt for writing this book. It's a gem.

The implications of his thesis are profound for any conventional view of the Social Sciences. Perhaps only a thinker of such proven qualification could set forth so bold a vision in such a forceful and credible way. Fortunately, it is also a book clearly written and accessible to a wide variety of readers. Joseph P Garske

6 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Great Read! By Michael DeLoach This book is a fascinating piece of cross discipline scholarship that enhances the field of social science as a whole. While I bought this book hoping that the lessons would apply to international relations in particular, the book is more about broad means of conceptualizing social science ontologies. Once again, Wendt, who is best know for revolutionizing the world of theoretical international relations as the father of constructivism, turns existing thinking on its head with this riveting work.
