Just as there are predictable seasons of the year, there are also common passages in life through which we all pass. Each season has its own beauty and its own danger; its own challenges and rewards. There are tasks we must master in each season if we are to move successfully to the next. We need a Guide to help us navigate these seasons. We need someone who has walked the path ahead of us, who knows where the landmines are, and who can lead us safely to our final destination. We need the One who has ordained all our days before there was ever one of them (Psalm 139:16). We need Jesus, the One who knows us intimately and loves us unconditionally.

Chesterton but it should be considered one of his true gems. His essays here are excellent. Not only does Chesterton offer his usual insight and fine style but the great writer's humor in often on center stage with funny pieces like "The Nightmare" and "The Telegraph Poles." With almost 40 essays here, the reader gets to see Chesterton at his versatile best. Highly recommended.

Una Mujer Sin Importancia (Spanish Edition), by Oscar Wilde

About the Author Oscar Wilde was born on October 16, 1854, to the Irish nationalist and writer Speranza Wilde and the doctor William Wilde. After graduating from Oxford in 1878, Wilde moved to London, where he became notorious for his sharp wit and flamboyant style of dress. Though he was publishing plays and poems throughout the 1880s, it wasn t until the late 1880s and early 1890s that his work started to be received positively. In 1895, Oscar Wilde was tried for homosexuality and was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison. Tragically, this downfall came at the height of his career, as his plays, An Ideal Husband "and The Importance of Being Earnest, "were playing to full houses in London. He was greatly weakened by the privations of prison life, and moved to Paris after his sentence. Wilde died in a hotel room, either of syphilis or complications from ear surgery, in Paris, on November 30, 1900.

The only stipulations given to the authors were that the story should be short (300 - 3,000 words long), and Asia as the backdrop or an Asian as the central character.

From the Author This is the first anthology that I have put together and I decided to do it, because there was nothing like it I could submit my short stories on Asia to. I would like to thank all the authors with stories in this book. They are real professionals and were a pleasure to work with.Regards,Owen Jones(Contributor and Compiler of Asian Shorts)amazon.com/-/e/B00502ANBO

From the Back Cover Asian Shorts came about because of a sequence of events on one weekend in May 2015. A friend was telling me that he had several short stories with Asia as a backdrop, I was saying that I had a few as well, another friend sent me an email that he wanted to write a short on Pattaya, and one of my Thai cousins sent me her latest photo, the one on the cover of this book. It was like somebody was trying to tell me something, or several were anyway. The nineteen stories by nine authors in this anthology were sent to me in one month, but are as varied as their writers. The stipulation was that Asia or an Asian had to feature strongly in the story. We have stories featuring Cambodia, China, Laos, Malaysia, Pakistan, Thailand, the USA and Vietnam, by Asian and non-Asian authors who live in or come from Britain, Malaysia, Thailand, the USA and Vietnam. Some of these writers are well-known as writers, some are better known in other spheres, some have written a lot before and been published in the traditional sense, others are travelling the Indie Publishing path and for yet others this is the very first time they or you will have seen their stories in print of any kind. You can read more about each author by visiting the web sites that they have given after their stories. I thoroughly recommend that you do this as what you will find out about the authors will surprise you, I guarantee it. Finally, my thanks go out to all the authors who have made this book possible, we hope that you will enjoy it and give each writer your feedback about their stories or write to me at the publisher's about the book as a whole. Best Wishes, Owen Jones

By trevor "Asian Shorts" is a product were you get what you pay for - come experimental book about short stories based on experiences with Asians as the main backdrop subject. I recommend it to anyone willing to purchase the product. Prices may differ slightly as time goes on. but what can you expect for the small price of any book? It might not be the best book in the world - that much is true!! but it does contain a lot of truth and is a must have gift or present for any time of the year. I totally recommend it...

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Life From a Different Perspective By piney woods books I didn't know what to expect when I opened the pages of Asian Shorts. This eclectic collection of short stories and personal essays didn't do much for me. I expected the authors to give me some insight into the culture and lifestyle of a part of the world I'm not familiar with. What I found between the covers of the book were recitations of personal experiences that could have happened to my next door neighbor. Mostly, I was disappointed in the lack of depth expressed by these various authors. One or two stories have remained with me...but most were read and passed by.

By Rain Zadair ART:The artist has a beautiful, watercolor-like style and basic knowlegde of anatomy, but the facial expressions are extremely bland. When the Doctor is arrested for being mistaken as Jack the Ripper, Rory appears and Amy tells him to do something. Her expression is utterly calm. It barely ever changes. Amy isn't Kristen Steward. In comics as well as animation, facial expressions are crucial to narration. You simply cannot convey emotions without the appropriate facial expression and body language but while the drawings themselves are of decent quality, the faces are quite blank. But in the artist's defense, all Doctor Who comics seem to have in common that the authors' style is either visually appealing, but with poorly done facial expressions which are a huge part of human communication, or the style is minimalistic with only basic resemblance to the characters and/or reeks of a loveless, purely technical hand, like the hand that draws the cheap, rushed daily cartoons for an audience too young to care for visual appeal beyond being dully entertained for 10 minutes. I am still dreaming to find a Doctor Who comic featuring all maximum character resemblance, effort and detail in overall artwork (but not over-detailed where every line in the face is equally thick and black, aging any character by 30 years), and strong, credible facial expressions. This seems to be an impossible task...LETTERING:There are the bolded words in the speech bubbles... bolded for emphasis so the sentence sounds right, but sometimes the wrong word seems bolded when comparing the sentence to the context. There are differences in meaning between "WHAT are you doing here?", "What ARE you doing here?", "What are YOU doing here?", and "What are you doing HERE?".STORY:It seems to come in several parts and this is one of them. Way to make an extra buck! This comic is ridiculously short. It ends in a cliffhanger with Amy getting kidnapped by the alien. I'm not sure I'll get the sequels. On one hand, I want to know how the story ends, on the other, there is little suspense: the Doctor has been saved and freed of the accusation of being the ripper, and he does or does not want to interfere with the ripper's final murder, but is this a hook? Who cares about random people who got murdered so long ago? Amy got kidnapped, but we know how her story ends in canon narration, so she'll be fine. There would have been higher stakes and a greater hook had the Doctor continued to be under arrest or in other danger connected to being mistaken for Jack the Ripper. But that problem is solved on page 2.TECH:Now, on Kindle readability. If you don't have an actual Kindle but only the app, this is something for bigger screens such as tablets, not for the smartphone. You cannot rotate the screen, and in portrait, you have to constantly enlarge the pages which creates a lot of bustle and sliding, including sliding your current pane out of view. It's quite an exercise to read.BUY?If you're a hardcore DW fan who wants to read every word the Doctor says, and never gets enough Doctor Who, get it. If you want to save your money for only the best merch and literature, I say skip this one as well as many other comics by many other artists.

The women of Freezing do not mess around, and limbs and lives are lost.Freezing volumes 1 and 2 cover what would basically be the first half of the first anime series. The story moves at rapid pace, introducing characters, the world of West Genetics, the mythology and technology and the basic themes. It is also heavily focused on action, and the fights between the Pandora are intense and bloody. There is some fan service, although it is far tamer than what was on display in the anime, with only a few panels of actual nudity.Freezing has all the trappings of a typical pretty girl battle series, but underneath it has a very dark, very mean streak. While the writers seem to actually like their main characters they are not above humiliating, abusing them and killing them. That mean streak only gets more intense as the book moves on, and finishes on a very disturbing note.I really did enjoy Freezing Vol. 1-2, but this series is not for everyone, and because of the graphic violence it is definitely not for younger readers. While the art is fresh and bright, the story is mean and gritty. If you give Freezing a chance be prepared to be shocked, and possibly offended as the characters are repeatedly exposed to some very brutal and unflinching violence. Still, solid story telling, strong art and panel layout, and surprisingly strong characters keep this series from devolving into trash, and keep the reader invested in the fates of these poor, abused characters. If you think you can handle the brutality, give Freezing a try. It's worth it.(For reference, this series is about the same level of brutality as Akame Ga Kill, if that helps any.)

By Jason I first saw the Freezing anime and was intrigued enough to find the manga online and read all 180 chapters that have been released. As soon as the English translations were announced I reserved the first three volumes on Amazon. This is a lengthy, involved and violent series. I find the story intriguing, original, and engaging. I want to read the next chapter as soon as I finish the most recent release. That doesn't happen very often for me. I find the characters fairly well developed (even the side characters get decent character development) and their backstories interesting. There are even several other series in the Freezing line that are nothing but backstory for many of the main characters, telling you how or why they became Pandora or Limiters and how they paired up. I love this series and recommend it to anyone who likes long stories, sci-fi and isn't turned off by violent fight scenes or nudity (most of which is clothes being torn up during fights). This is definitely not for kids.

Kazua Aoi is the brother of the hero of the last great NOVA clash and is gong to west genetics to become a limiter. However on the first day, he gets on the wrong side of the most dangerous student, the Untouchable Queen Satelizer El-Brigit. But as he learns, this ice queen is more than she appears and so is he.This is more brutal and bloody than the anime with quite a few changes. A good read still, and looking forward to the next one.

The Holy Spirit’s role in the Christian life is often misunderstood. Some believers focus solely on spiritual gifts, while others avoid the subject altogether. Yet the truth is that the Holy Spirit is indispensable to, and readily at work in, the heart and life of every Christian.

Great book.

Back then people were very aware of "qu'en dira-t'on" & their status in society was guiding their action. The sentiments are very well described, we can feel the atmosphere all the time like if we were part of the story. We see Anna getting lost & incapable of getting out that toxic relationship.I recommend that book to all the ones who once dreamed of a passionate impossible love !

However it was a purchase I am glad I made. First the story is really engrossing, you lose track of time when reading and an easy read. The French translation is good and easy to follow. I highly recommend this book either in English or French

I highly recommend this book by my former colleague, Emily Roller. Somehow, she has managed to translate the sometimes-tortuous, occasionally-rewarding, always-insane experience of teaching in Baltimore City Public Schools into a humorous fictional account. My old standby for describing my experience at school #405 applies to her book as well: "If'n ya see me laffin', ahma laffin' jes t' keep from cryin'."--Cab Calloway. This is a must read for all former BCPSS teachers, for sure. But if you're thinking of teaching in an urban school--particularly in Baltimore--you need to make sure your funny bone is working, first; because that's what you'll need to get through the experience with grace and dignity. This book is fiction, but it's also Truth with a capital T. Outstanding.

Fisher I really enjoyed this fictional take on what I can only assume is a very accurate perspective on public school systems in large cities. I loved the transitions character to character and how the story came together.Putting the book down was difficult. I could not WAIT to get to the end! Recommended for anyone who enjoys a laugh!Great job Emily!

This book is brilliant and hilarious. Read this if you are (or ever were) a teacher.P.S. The probable inspiration for Principal Fehler was actually far worse than the fictional character.

“I’m unfamiliar with Genji, but Luke is such an interesting character. It’s easy to judge his life story, but I wonder what it’d be like if we could love as he does . . .” From the back-cover of paperback edition: “Falling in love is a second birthing; life is never the same way as it once was.” In this modern adaptation of The Tale Of Genji, a classic that has enchanted Japanese readers for one thousand years, Luke falls for Wisteria, his uncle’s new wife. Even though he feels indebted to his uncle, who raised him as his guardian, Luke seduces her anyway. As he repeats the act of adultery, he grows even more serious about her. Guarding this secret is a priority in Luke’s life. Luke is not, however, a victim of his circumstances and his own virility; he enjoys discussing Shakespeare, appreciates beautiful gardens, and he is a sharp business strategist. Eventually, he finds a more fulfilling relationship with another woman. He still must guard his secret.

There are also characters that give you an opportunity to redefine the meaning of love. There is at the minimum one character any reader can relate to.

New characters, bigger picture By Orange Newt NONPLAYER's second issue introduces new characters and a broader picture of the near-future world the story is set in. We know from the first issue it's a "post-incident" future; it now appears the "incident" involved artificial intelligences running amok, and there's a new government bureau monitoring that kind of thing -- and responding to smaller-scale incidents like a robot going off the rails, making demands in Latin, and throwing ... fish. Hey, it throws really hard, you were warned. We meet the NAIB agents trying to get a handle on that episode, as well as some of the primary movers of the "Warriors of Jarvath" game -- a very contentious and worried place behind the scenes. And Queen Fendra, who blinked out of existence in the game world an instant before Dana could chop her, turns up in the real world -- as I suspected! -- only in a place and situation I never would have anticipated. As in the first issue, the art is great, the story is fluidly paced and intriguing. If I had to make a criticism about anything, it would be that the color throughout is kind of subdued -- it's as if we were viewing everything through a tinted filter. But hey, if that's the effect the author wants, I can live with it.Dana, featured character in the first issue, appears in just four panels this time, kind of a cameo, although she is on the cover too, if you look closely enough. Nate Simpson reassures us, on his/the comic's website, that Dana IS the protagonist, and "will be all over issue 3".So, issue 3: the first issue was reprinted in April, number 2 came out in June -- can we hope to see number 3 around, say, August? Um, sorry folks, that's NO. Simpson says "Yes, this comic [#2] took four years ... I have a family and a day job, and I make this book solely between the hours of 3 and 6 AM on weekdays ... I am only now laying out #3. It will not come out quickly." Patience is advised.

The Custom of the Country, by Edith Wharton

Review 'Wharton captures with masterly ease the world of post-Civil War America in this brilliantly-written and highly-entertaining novel.' Charles Osborne, Sunday Telegraph

From the Publisher First published in 1913, Edith Wharton's The Custom Of The Country is scathing novel of ambition featuring one of the most ruthless heroines in literature. Undine Spragg is as unscrupulous as she is magnetically beautiful. Her rise to the top of New York's high society from the nouveau riche provides a provocative commentary on the upwardly mobile and the aspirations that eventually cause their ruin. One of Wharton's most acclaimed works, The Custom Of The Country is a stunning indictment of materialism and misplaced values that is as powerful today for its astute observations about greed and power as when it was written nearly a century ago.

From the Inside Flap Highly acclaimed at its publication in 1913, The Custom of the Country is a cutting commentary on America's nouveaux riches, their upward-yearning aspirations and their eventual downfalls. Through her heroine, the beautiful and ruthless Undine Spragg, a spoiled heiress who looks to her next materialistic triumph as her latest conquest throws himself at her feet, Edith Wharton presents a startling, satiric vision of social behavior in all its greedy glory. As Undine moves from America's heartland to Manhattan, and then to Paris, Wharton's critical eye leaves no social class unscathed.

I like to copy passages from her books just to feel how beautifully she constructs her sentences and paragraphs. I've also read Ethan Frome, Summer, House of Mirth, and Age of Innocence; they are all terrific novels. But The Custom of the Country is her best. Could there be a worse mother, wife, or daughter than Undine? And yet, she is too pathetic to hate; she is so needy and dependent upon material things. She's perhaps the most unliberated woman in literature! Do read this novel; you will love it and learn from it.

Before reading this novel recently (I'd hardly heard of it before), I'd read her much more famous "Age of Innocence" and "House of Mirth." I thought they were okay -- beautiful descriptive passages, brilliant flashes of psychological and political insight, but with boring characters and lame story lines. "The Custom of the Country" has all the fine qualities you expect to find in a good Wharton novel, but with an absolutely amazing protagonist -- Undine. "The Custom of the Country" is "Vanity Fair," with its much paler Becky Sharp, squared. This is what Thackeray would have written if he'd had a much keener and colder eye -- and a blacker sense of humor. This is now in my novelistic top ten -- along with (if you want to know some other books I like before taking my advice and buying/reading this): "Moby-Dick," "The Man Without Qualities," "Blood Meridian," "Remembrance of Things Past," and Burroughs' last major novel "The Western Lands."

By A Customer I have just finished reading Edith Wharton's THE CUSTOM OF THE COUNTRY and have never wanted to strangle a protaganist so much in my life! Ms. Wharton has created a character that could rival any modern day soap opera vixen. Undine Spragg is spoilt, selfish, vain and socially ambitious. When Ms. Wharton writes from her perspective, I found myself at times feeling sorry for her. When she writes from the perspective of the people Undine ruins, I despised her. In the end, there is nothing kind that I can say about Undine Spragg. About Ms. Wharton, however, I can say she has again reestablished herself as a literary genius. In the character of Undine, Ms. Wharton criticizes the emptiness of greed mixed with vanity in a shallow person who knows nothing else. However, Ms. Wharton also makes it clear that Undine is not soley to blame for her character. "It is the custom of the country" her second father-in-law explains of Undine's stupidity, insensitivity and unending selfishness. Women who are so totally pampered and kept ignorant of the real world remain spoilt brats until they are old enough to truly hurt so many lives. The two saddest victims of her ruthlessness are her second husband Ralph, a sensitive writer from an old-money family, and their son Paul. Though it is doubtful anyone will like Undine, you will at times pity her. However, the genius of Edith Wharton is that through Undine we see the destruction of society and families by the ridiculous treatment of women in society of early 1900's. Another note on this particular edition of this and all Everyman books is that they are so beautifully crafted, it is always a treasure to read any book printed by this company. Besides being beautifully designed, Everyman editions also have wonderful chronologies of the author and historical references and literary events. They are truly elegant additions to any library.

By jack d. harvey Amazon is careful to disguise the fact that these are not really books but plaquettes, about 7"x 9" with no pagination and from the printing date are printed up on demand. The quality of the paper not bad and print of a decent size but this is not a standard book. No critical apparatus, no introduction, inconvenient size and no provenance other than the name of the US company that printed it and the printing date. Mine was printed on 7/29/14. Still not a bad deal at the price but a disclosure as to the exact form of the "book" should be provided by Amazon.

By Louise L Giliberti Reading Flaubert 's La Temtation de Saint Antoine in the original French made much more sense. I read it in conjonction with James Ensor's exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago. Whiteout the knowledge of Flauber's work some of Ensor's works are unintelligible. Very erudite and a masterpiece.

By Karen I bought this book because I know the author and had been friends with Beth since grade school (probably kindergarten!). I was curious. I didn't know much of the details of her death -- I just knew my friend had died only a week after a missed opportunity to see her because I was in too big a hurry to get home to Canada after a visit back to my home town. I read the short book in an evening. I was entranced. The book moved me and reminded me of so many of the same thoughts I had after losing a much loved family member many years ago. It reminded me that life is too short and that we have no promise of tomorrow. This book is not only for the grieving but also for anyone who needs to self-examine or re-evaluate their own life. Thanks Bill. I didn't see Beth nearly often enough but her life was always a testament to me and a witness to everyone she met. I will always love her too.

S By George Thomsen As one who recently lost his own wife I was very interested in what Pastor Johnson might have to say about his own experience that might help me. There was plenty to be sure. I was touched by the author's candor about his feelings and how he processed his grief. Like C. S. Lewis's "A Grief Observed", perhaps the book's greatest value is that William Johnson demonstrates how to embrace our grief, to not shy away from it and to be open to what God might teach us through it. Johnson's most impressive insights are those about how grief has been a corrective in the Lord's hands used to alter his previous notions about grief and have more empathy in ministering to the bereaved. A precious little book that ministered to my grieving soul.

This is a must read By Christopher L Johnson I have purchased several copies of this book to give to those I know that have experienced the loss of a loved one in their lives. I have been told it was truly a help in their time of grief. If you are experiencing the loss of a loved one I would encourage you read this and be comforted and encouraged. if you are a pastor I would say this is an absolute must read as it will provide keen insight on what those that grieve may really need from others in this difficult time. Everyone, pastor or not, will learn more about what those that are grieving really need in thesae difficult times. I will continue to purchase additonal copies to provide as gifts to those I know that are going through these very hard times.
